Good day to you,
I have a marriage certificate, of 1885 it states:
In the presence of us : ...............
There two names, both have the same surname as the bride, my question is, if you can help me, was there an order as to which name would be first, ie, bride's mother then sister or did it not matter who signed the certificate first ?
Hope this makes sence to you.
Thankyou for reading and hopefully helping me.

Hi Maizie
Not too sure without seeing the certificate. I would presume that in
1885 the etiquette was to put the oldest person first as they seemed
to go in ages.
If you could give us some names and dates we might be able to tell
you who they are with that kind of information.
regards

Having just seen a marriage cert from 1899 I can tell you that in this case the bride's mother signed underneath the bride's sister :-\

My thought would be that the person standing closest to the desk was the first to sign!
Really I think it is that simple and although we all know about old fashioned wedding etiquette we do try to read too much into some of the simplest things.

My youngest son married in an hotel and his new mother-in-law stood up to sign the register as a witness, at which point my son said to me, "You're signing too". That was the first I knew about it, so as m.i.l was nearest the register she signed first. In many years to come, people might just think it was an alphabetical thing as her surname begins with F and mine with W.

Hello, and thankyou for your input.
I have just received in the post, the birth certificate for the bride with her mothers name on it, so now I know, and by the way, it was the second signature on the marriage certificate that was the mother, which looks as if the sister had written it on the mothers behalf as it is also marked with an X.
Thanks for reading.
Maisey.
