Title: Charlotte Finnis 1871/Cornwallis Link?
Post by: delyss on Tuesday 29 March 11 08:53 BST (UK)
I wonder if anyone can help me throw some light on something my father has always talked about...he believes there is a link from his grandmothers sister to the Cornwallis family in Kent. I have researched the cornwallis family lightly but cant see it....Charlotte Finnis was his grandfmother and it would be a link from one of her sisters (unknown). Very little is known in the family that is left about this side of dads family. Can anyone help please?  ???

Do you have some dates for Charlotte FINNIS ie. when/where born or anything else about her that would enable us to pinpoint her and thus find her siblings etc.?

Casalguidi :)

Would this be Charlotte's birth?

December qtr 1887
Holbeach district (Lincolnshire)  Vol 7a, Page 392
Fines, Charlotte

It's the only one coming up, searching 1851 - 1911!

There are other possibilities - but born earlier than 1851.

Just ihnore me! I'm having a bad day!!  :(
Left "Lincolnshire" in the search box! Doh!

Hi, I have dates on and around 1871 as birth date. mother Catherine Audley Swift. We dont have much info from dads family at all, we cant even trace my grandfather. He was known as Clarence Henry Fuller but I cant find any record for him unless he was also Harry fuller as a record shows Harry Fuller marrying my grandmother Clara Fuller! yep Iam confused! I thought my mums side was difficult!

Right! Less busy at work, lunch eaten - maybe the brain is working better now?!  ;D ;D

Potential Births:

September qtr 1870

The Charlotte born in Maidstone is here on the 1881 census:

:D Thank you! I have got her sisters now and have managed to trace their husbands...no Cornwallis link tho!
Have now traced Grandads parents but would like a look up to trace marriage between James Fuller and Kate ? poss 1883-1888? If you can give me any help on tracing that marriage and her maiden name I will have quite a full set for dad! I believe Kate was from Bearsted in Kent.

Thanks for your help!

Marriages for the parishes around Maidstone are included in the Mid Kent Marriages Index 1754-1911

The only marriage for a James FULLER to a Kate was 3rd August 1867 at Hawkhurst  :-[

Perhaps they married in a non-conformist church or register office.

But could it be the other Charlotte Jane Finnis? From Sandwich?

Can't see the family in 1881, but here they are in 1891:

 :D Thanks bearkat,
I can see this isnt the one as Kate was born 1863 but thank you for looking!

I have them living in Maidstone with their children on a 1901 census, 1st child was born 1888.Her place of birth is given as Bearsted and I would have liked to pick up the Bearsted link if I could have done.

I cant link my family to the sandwich Finnis family at the moment whereas I know that the maidstone Charlotte Finnis is my great grandma.

Maybe I will have to do more research on the Cornwallis family at Linton and see if I can do it that way. Dad has always told this story but he could have got it muddled over the years bless him! He seems to think it was one of charlottes sisters which would be either Alice Finnis, or Annie Finnis unless there were more sisters that I havent found yet!

:D Thats great I will try and find out who Elizabeth married! I discovered that the couple and son who were lodgers were the daughter Annie and her husband and son. I wonder if Elizabeth is the link!? Thank you for finding her!
