Title: Dundee orphanages
Post by: sorcha65 on Monday 28 March 11 12:05 BST (UK)
Would anyone know if there were any Orphanages/Childrens Homes in the Dundee area? Also what would the circumstances be for children being taken into one, apart from the obvious one of the parents dying. Anything would be great, thanks, Sorcha

It was also not unknown for children to turn up in orphanages further afield than their local area and not always the case that both parents had died. For example,  one dying and the other being unable/unwilling to cope.

Duncarse House was another place used as a children's home/orphanage in Dundee, (Perth Road area).  It was used from 1924-1950's but unfortunately no records survived for here.
Go to local.history[at]dundee.gov.uk   They were very helpful to me and I'm sure will assist with your query.

I searched The Scotsman Digital Archive and there is reference (in 1936) to an orphanage in Broughty Ferry Road, Dundee.  A search of SCAN brings up:

"In 1870 a ship capsized on the journey between Dundee and Newport and eighteen people including the popular 'Cossack Jock' -Captain Spalding- drowned. Within a few days of the disaster a fund had been opened and £700 subscribed to care for Dundee children orphaned by the disaster. The Dundee Orphanage  was initially situated in Small's Wynd, and was superseded by a building in Ferry Road."

There was also an orphanage down Roseangle. It was run by the Sisters of Charity so it was maybe mainly for catholic children

There was the training ship The "Mars" in Dundee. Kids used to be threatened with being sent to the Mars.

Check out my earlier post about Childrens homes in Dundee - by Rowanali - I have posted 2 photos of children from one of the 'orphanages'.  I don't know which one, but if you have a relative in mind, they might be in the photos!
