Title: Lookup request for Woodgates
Post by: katwoo on Sunday 27 March 11 12:13 BST (UK)
Hi can anyone help me look for the family of Thomas William Woodgates born 1869in Shobrooke, Exeter, devon England.
Emigrated to Chippewa County,Michegan in 1891.
Married Margaret Hillier 29/11/1900.
They lived in Dafter,Chippewa Michegan, according to the USA census in 1910 & 1920 but after that i have no info.
As far as i know there were 6 children.
Are there any Woodgates still out there i wonder :-\ :-\

Hi
Find-A-Grave, lists them both (as WOODGATE)  in the records of Mackinac Island (Protestant) Cemetery in Mackinac County Michigan. Neither record has a date - but Margaret's maiden name is noted.
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gs&

Thomas W WOODGATE, Blacksmith is a widower in 1930, Dafter Twp, Chippewa (same location as in 1920)
Age 61, living with 3 unmarried daughters - age 21, 19, 17 (the same 3 youngest as in 1920)

So Margaret died between the 1920 & 1930 Census.
I think it could be 1924 - thought the record names her father as "Andrew", rather than "William":
Margaret WOODGATE - died 11 Feb 1924 , Sault Ste. Marie, Chippewa, Michigan
Age: 45 (b 1879 ), Housewife, b Michigan, married
Father: Andrew HILLIER, Mother: Margaret STEVENS

Hello Katwoo,

Following on the SSDI shows that Thomas Clifton Woodgate born 16 April 1901 Died 12 June 1984 -
Last Residence: 49783  Sault Sainte Marie, Chippewa, Michigan.

A few family tree entries and World Connect on Thomas which may give you a contact. The surname of the wife quoted on family tree entries could indicate he was married twice.

“The Horse Was Also Damaged Somewhat.  (From the Dault Ste. Marie News).  Larch  -   Floyd Woodgate of Dafter while motoring to Kinross hit a horse which walked in front of the car causing a total wreck of his Dodge car and also breaking the horse’s leg.”

“Find Large Still.  Sault Ste. Marie.  A 50 gallon still in operation, 19 gallons of mash, 3 gallons of whisky and miscellaneous moonshining equipment were confiscated at 925 Cedar Street and the owner, Lloyd Woodgate, 26, placed under arrest Wednesday afternoon.  In an adjoining building on the property of Thomas Duguid, 927 Cedar street, 30 gallons of whisky, claimed to be owned by Woodgate, was confiscated.

Duguid, who it is claimed allowed Woodgate to place the 30 gallons of whisky in his warehouse after it is believed Woodgate learned of the coming raid, faced a charge of possession before Judge Ray Gillespie Saturday afternoon.  The case was adjourned until June 17 and Duguid was released on $500 bond.”

“Treat ’Em All Alike.”  Sault Ste. Marie.  Treat all places alike for violations of the beer license provisions Commissioner W.B. Robertson urged at the city commission meeting.  He recommended that the license to sell beer be taken away from taverns recently fined by the State Liquor Control Commission for selling whisky.

“If we close one place for breaking the rule we should close all places which break the rule”, said Robertson.  Reference was made by the commissioner to Kaiser Maze, Northview Hotel, Herbert Downs, Herb’s Blue Room, Lloyd Woodgate, Ashnum Hill restaurant, and Gould Pappas, Algonquin pavillion.

“Where is the police report on these places”, asked Mayor Laundy  “I don’t have any facts before me, and I think that we should have something definite to go by before we take steps to revoke anyone’s license.  If we have the records, and it is shown that these places have violated their agreement, I favor taking away their licenses” said the mayor.  Action was postponed until the next commission meeting.”

HI Katwoo,

Just a thought, there is a RAOGK volunteer in Chippewa. Michigan who will do public record and obit look ups - maybe you could get the obits for Marion and Lloyd leading to other family information on both.

Hello Katwoo,

Taking another look at your Woogate family, I wonder if the Francis Woodgate aged 2 years and 8 months -  son of Clifton (Thomas) and Mary on the 1930 Census is :- John F Woodgate. The 1930 census was April 1930 so age would fit. Would also be another one to ask RAOGK volunteer about.  ???

John F. Woodgate
Born 4 July 1927 and Died 1 st Nov 2007
Last Residence: 49783  Sault Sainte Marie, Chippewa, Michigan
SSN issued: Michigan (Before 1951)
