Hi, I think I know who this might be but not sure, the person I think it is was born 1843, does this match up?
Any help to restore/advise appreciated.

Yikes, what a tache!!! :D
Around 1905-1910 would be my guess, with that high collar. Could we see the whole thing please, and if there's any printing on the back could we see that too?
Cheers,

Hi Mags, it looks like an Opaltype - is it on glass? That would be the third one in about a week that we've seen on here, after not having any (to my recollection) in the previous 5 or 6 years!!

Been touched up too, hasn't it Prue...evident around the edges of the collar and the hair.

Definitely, China!

Thanks for the replies and the great clean-ups.
So it can't be the person I thought it was, he died in 1903 - anyone any ideas of his age?
The photo is on glass, nothing on the back, can't post a different image as the original has been put away "too safe", been looking for it for about 6 months >:(
I'm now wondering if he is a son of the person I thought it was or even another great grandfather, the original photo was in the house that was bought by Evan (1843-1903) in the 1880's, he brought up two sons and two step sons in that house only one which I can trace after the 1911 census.
A rough age may rule out his own sons b. 1879 & 1881 any help appreciated.

Hi Mags :)
It's very hard to guess at an age, because the photo has been heavily retouched and painted over. If I had to give you something I'd guess at late 40s...just because of the forehead lines and some indication of a jowl under that amazing moustache. Could be anywhere a decade either side of that, though. Rather rules out the sons in my opinion :-\

Aye, Prue. I was just going to guess 50 to 60 when I had a warning someone else had posted. I tend toward the younger age since upkeep of that "stash" would take time an older gentleman might be less likely to want to dedicate.
Anne, does your Evans family have any connection (through marriage, etc.) to Scandinavia or Germany, or thereabouts? The reason I ask is that the collar and "neck sash" remind me of some photos I've seen from this era in those regions. Just a wild conjecture for your consideration.
