I have been researching the parents of Frances George Phillips born in Poplar in 1891. I was lead to believe that his parents were Henry Phillips b: 1859 Liverpool and Anna Marie Huxtable b: 1856 in Somerton, and that Anna Marie's parents were Henry Huxtable [1834-1891] and Mary Anna Gibbs [1833-1869] who were married in Langport in 1854. However - having not been able to find ANY records for an Anna Marie Huxtable for these dates, or a marriage record for her and Henry Phillips, I sent for Frances George Phillips' birth certificate. This shows that his parents were Henry Phillips - correct as above, and Marie Gibbs. This suggests that Marie was possibly born to Mary Anna before she was married to Henry Huxtable, thus taking her mother's name [possibly from a previous marriage??]. But I am still . hitting brick walls - I cant find any records of a Marie Gibbs marrying a Henry Phillips. If anyone has ANY information on this part of the family I would be very gratefil. To summarise I am looking fro birth of Marie Gibbs, in Somerton approx 1856, and marriage of same to Henry Phillips.
Many thanks

Possible?
Birth Anna Maria Gibbs in 1856 (March Q)
Bridgewater volume 5c page 499
Perhaps a mistake was made during registration? Or perhaps she was not Mary's daughter but was adopted by Henry and Mary?
On 1861 in Kent, Anne M Gibbs has a sister? Jane who is a year older than her:
Henry Huxtable Head age 27 Agent to Confidant Life assurance? born Yeovil

Morganllan - thank you so much for that. The puzzle though is why is Henry Phillip's mother listed as Marie Gibbs and NOT Huxtable as a maiden name on his bith certificate . I suppose another possiblity is that her parents parted for whatever reason and the children then took their mother's maiden name of Gibbs.
And thank you so much for your time KGarrard but I have all the info for Henry Phillips - he is not the problem here - its the Huxtable/ Gibbs that we cant fathom out.

Wonder if when Marie registered the birth she was asked for Mother's maiden name by the Registrar and automatically gave her Mmn ;D it's an easy mistake to make!

Hi Lisa,
I have just checked the Somerton baptisms and there is nothing listed for either Sarah J or Anna Marie Huxtable or Gibbs.
I am waiting for the PR's for the period of their parents marriage and will check them as soon as they arrive.
I also checked for the baptism of Mary Anna Gibbs but there is nothing for that either. There is however, an entry in the West Street Baptist Chapel on 22 Sep 1832 for Mariana but no parents forenames or surnames are listed.
If I find anything further, I will come back to you.

Thank you so much ELizabeth - I have to admit that I am completely stumped over this one. If I could find a marriage for Henry Phillips and Marie Gibbs /Huxtable it would help as then I could get the marriage certificate to varify her father's name - but cant find that anywhere either, Anyone got a brick wall I can borrow to bang my head against?

Hi Lisa,
You have a very tricky one here. I have spent a lot of time trawling through but still haven't managed to find a marriage for Anna Marie and Henry Phillips.
I have found a little more info that may add to what you have already.
1871 census. Sarah Jane Huxtable a nurse, born Somerton living in East Retford district, Nottingham.
1871 census. Hannah Huxtable a domestic servant born Somerton living in Chorlton on Medlock, Manchester. Perhaps this is where she met Henry.
The 1911 census shows (*), so that would put her marriage during last 3 quarters of 1880 or the first quarter of 1881.
There are two possibilites, 1) they did not marry at this point, or at all, 2) she was married before and married Henry under a different surname.
Would it help to get another child's birth certificate as it might throw a new angle on the matter.
Best of luck with it anyway.
Elizabeth

Liz I really appreciate all the time and effort that you have put in. I am beginning to think that Henry and Marie were not married, and yes - the thought of getting the birth certificate of another sibling is something that I have been considering - looks like that is going to have to be the way to go.
