Can someone please look up the death of Bedilla Barrett?
In the 1901 census, Islington, London
She was listed as being 35 years old, born in Ed. Scotland
She was married to John Barrett
Children: Nellie aged 13 and William aged 2
I know John Barrett remarried in 1908 to Nellie Vine
On the 1911 Census Nellie (Bedillas daughter is married and at a diff address)
William is residing with his father, new wife and their children
Bedilla seems to have disappeared. I cant find her anything about her after the 1901 census.
Also my grandfather was John and Nellies youngest son and he never mentioned a brother (step brother) named William. I am trying to find out when he died. I have a photo of the children taken in 1910 and William is not in it.

Hi
Have you checked the Scottish civil registration for her death as well as the English and Welsh? Did John remarry as a widower?

Good morning,
this is a bit of a long shot- there is this death:
March quarter 1906
Delilah Barrett 41yrs Islington 1b 117
I can't see a Delilah in the censuses and she is about the right age.
best wishes

While it seems unlikely that John would marry a Bridget- then a Bedilla (Bedelia?), there is quite a gap in the children's births.
1891 has Nellie 3 yrs and George 11 months
1901 Nellie 13 yrs and William 2 yrs
There may of course have been births and deaths in the interim.
After seeing several Bridget/Bedelia as interchangeable, it is only now that it has dawned on me where the name Delia comes from as a name for Bridget ::) I know 2 Delias whose real name is Bridget but I didn't know why!
-
Her name wasnt Bridget..She isnt the Bridget Barrett that was suggested in another post about the Barrett-Vine family.
'My" John Barrett didnt marry Bridget McAuley and his parents were not John and Helen nee Brown. My Johns parents were Alfred and Mary
-
Ah I see. What was her name on the marriage certificate? Was it Bedilla?
-
I dont have the marriage certificate. I have no idea when or where they married (I presume Scotland) but thats just a guess as the first child was born there.
-
Do you have birth certificates for any of the children of John and Bedilla ?
-
Beg your pardon miabar.
That other thread looked quite complicated with lots of names so glad to be here where it seems more simple. :)
Can I just ask then - is the Scottish census 1891 John Barrett with wife Bridge and daughter Nellie, not yours?
Also, what do you think about the Delilah death?

The other thread said Johns parents were John Barrett and Helen Brown and he was a Mercantile Banker.
My johns parents were Alfred and Mary and John was a ticket writer.
1881 Census:
John aged 10 born Ed, Soctland
parents Alfred and Mary
dwelling: 37 Simpson St Battersea Surrey England
-
Alfred and Mary Jane Johnston married 3 January 1870 in Ed Scotland
son: John Alfred Frederick Barrett
b: 28 Oct 1870 Ed Scotland

Hello again,
yes I saw the info re 1881 and 1891.
So, may I ask again - is John, the clerk in 1891 with wife Bridge and daughter Nellie, not your John?
If not, do you have your John in 1891? (To check Bedilla's name?)
In response to your original request, there is no sign of a Bedilla Barrett death, but there is a Delilah Barrett death which fits with age, place and time and I cannot see a Delilah B in 1901 anywhere.
woudl you think this was worth following?

Do you have Alfred, Mary Jane and John in 1871?
-
I cant see how the John in 1891 with wife Bridget can be mine if his parents have a different name to this one...
But yes the Bedilla could be the Delilah so I should be searching for a Delilah married to John In Ed Scotland.
-
I think you need to get more information from what is available.
I was thinking that Delilah could be a misheard name rather than her name.
Bedelia and Bridget are both used for the same name.
If you got certificates:
death certificate for 'Delilah Barrett' and a birth certificate for William, you would have her previous name which may help you to find a marriage.
Did you get Alfred's name for the father from the marriage certificate of John and Nellie Vine?
-
I know this may not actually help but Delilah Barrett was buried at Islington cemetery 29 Jan 1806. The entry should have an age and last known address but not necessarily the names of any relatives.
You can pay to view the entry at www.deceasedonline.com
It could be cheaper than a £9.25 cert from the GRO.

Hi Dawn,
the age on Free BMD is 41 yrs which does fit with Bedilla's age from census but it is all supposition.
That's a useful site you gave there.
