Can anyone help me please.
I am searching for the marriage of William Divorty to Margaret Allan.
William Divorty was born in 1818 in Kintore Aberdeenshire. Margaret Allan was born about 1812 in Udny Aberdeenshire. Their first child William was born in 1849 in the Mill of Keithhall, Aberdeenshire.
William snr was a Miller.
Any information about Margaret Allan would also be very welcome.
Thank you.

Hi,
Are you aware that Margaret was married to William Melvin before William Divorty?
Sharon

My goodness no. Thanks for this information Sharon. Do you have any more details please?
-
In the 1851 census Margaret is living with the following at Mill Of Keithhall, Aberdeenshire.
William Diverty 32 born kintore Miller (master)
Margret Diverty 37 wife born Udny
Jane Melvin 17 born Inverurie daughter in law
James Melvin 15 born Inverurie son in law
Mary Ann Melvin 19 born Inverurie daughter in law
William Divorty 2 son born Keithhall
Robert Divorty 3 Months born Keithhall
Fergueson Chapel 27 servant
James Reid 18
I think son & daughter in law really refers to step son or daughter.
The pilot family search site has the following baptism for Mary Ann
Mary Ann Melvin
Baptism/Christening Date 14 Apr 1838
Baptism/Christening Place Inverurie, Aberdeen
Birth Date 02 Apr 1838
Father's Name William Melvin
Mother's Name Margaret Allan
Can not find a marriage for Margaret to either William.

Wow Sharon this is absolutely brilliant info.
Thank you so much for taking all this trouble to pass the details on to me.
It explains quite a lot about William Divorty & Margaret life together. I don't think I ever found the full detail of the 1851 census - so your new information is of great value to me.
William was my gt gt grandfather.
Thanks again
Chris

Hello Chris,
I see that the IGI has the following children born to 'your' couple...
GEORGE DIVORTY Birth: 03 NOV 1854 Ch: 01 JAN 1855 Inverurie, Aberdeen, Scotland
GEORGE DIVORTY Male Birth: 23 NOV 1852 : 16 DEC 1852 Keithhall And Kinkell, Aberdeen, Scotland
ROBERT DIVORTY Birth: 24 DEC 1850 Ch: 16 JAN 1851 Keithhall And Kinkell, Aberdeen, Scotland
WILLIAM DIVORTY Birth: 04 MAR 1849 Ch: 29 MAR 1849 Keithhall And Kinkell, Aberdeen, Scotland
Copies of these records are available for download from the ppv site at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk. On the same site I note on the free search, a will and I'd imagine an inventory for a William Divorty who dies circa 1870. When did he die?
Regards, Steve

There is a 21 page inventory to download from www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk. It will doubtless refer to Margaret Allan as his wife.
Total cost £5.00 (five pounds) - using a cart system. Unfortunately each page has to be downloaded individually.

Hi Steve,
I cannot thank you enough for all this information - I am very grateful to you. The information about Margaret (my gt gt grandmother) is growing by the minute.
Thanks to you and Sharon it's been a great day !!

Steve,
Sorry - forgot to answer your question re: the death of William Divorty.
This is a difficult one. William had two first cousin's both named William (Divorty) and born within a year or two of each other.
I have found burial references but have not been able to absolutely attribute any to my 2 x gt grandfather William. William Divorty & Margaret were living in George Street, Aberdeen ref: 1871 census.
By 1891 Margaret was a widow and had move down to London to live with her son Robert and his family.
Thanks for all the details you have found for me - I've now been able to update my genealogy database
