If someone died in Hunslet workhouse where are they likely to be buried. I have a Benjamin Hartley on the 1851 in Hunslet workhouse aged 71. He was born March 1779 in Methley. I can not find him on the 1861 but there are a few Benjamin Hartleys dying at this time. I have one death certificate with the informant an officer of the workhouse but can not be sure I have the correct man. I am trying to get to the right man by a process of elimination. Please can anyone suggest where I could find burial records. thanks

Hello
Could he possibly be buried in Hunslet cemetery? If so, the burial records are kept at Leeds City library. My brother has, coincidently, spend the last couple of days going through the Hunslet burial records - If you wish I'll ask him if he can take a look for you next time he's there?
Kind regards,
Debs

Hello Debs,
If your brother can find anything connected to Benjamin Hartley I would be pleased . If it is not the Benjamin I am looking for it may help in eliminating names from my list. Thanks for replying and offering your brother's help. Please pass on my thanks.
SVB.

Hello SVB
I've just spoken to my brother who's hoping to go to the library at some point next week and is happy to take a look at the records for you. I've also asked him if he can find any workhouse records there too, so hopefully I'll have some information for you by this time next week.
Kind regards,
Debs

There is a Benjamin Hartley buried 27th Sept 1853 aged 74 at Leeds Hunslet cemetery on the NBI. Is the one you have?

Hi Jo
Does the NBI give any more information as I have 6 Benjamin Hartleys dying in Hunslet in that period. The age is right . Does it give address or occupation?
Debs
Could you please ask your brother to check on this one to see if he can find more information. The Ben I am looking for was a stone mason.
Brian
I will try at yorkshire indexers.
thanks to you all for the assistance.

There is only minimal information on the NBI. There is only one for that Q and year in Hunslet according to FreeBMD. Hunslet is pretty much transcribed from 1845 - 1993 by the looks of it and he is the only one between 1851 and 1861. Well there is a 6 month one but that is May 1861.

I think I can dismiss at least 3 of the 6 entries for 1851 to 1861 for Hunslet. The one for Sept Q 1853, I think is the correct one as per my previous post.
Sept Q 1857 he was aged 75 and buried Gildersome.
June Q 1858 aged 18m and buried at Holbeck
June Q 1861 aged 6m and buried at Hunslet
All the above three are in the Hunslet registration district.
There is a burial for a Benjamin Hartley child in 1859 but no specific date and buried at Leeds Becket St cemetery.
The only one I cannot find on the NBI is the 1855 one.

Thanks Jo you have done what I thought was going to take me a long time ... eliminated most if not all on my list. I will wait to see if any more information comes from the cemetery records. I think the 1853 is the correct one. I hope it has a headstone and is not a common grave but I am not usually so lucky.
Thanks again SVB

It appears your question has been answered at yorkshire indexers.

I seem to remember that some workhouses buried paupers within the grounds of the Workhouse.

Calverley, may I ask what yorkshire indexers are and do they exist for other counties, do you have a link please.
Jo
Its okay, I have found it thanks. Gives the same burial as the one I mentioned. Cheers

Lin, Yorkshire Indexers originally Records for the Leeds area. It basically still is, but is being added to all the time. There are people on there with a lot info. Your best bet is to have a look at the site. You need to register (free) if you want to participate.
It does not cover other Counties, but holds a wealth of information, photos etc

Hi Brian
It appears your question has been answered at yorkshire indexers.
I am new to yorkshire indexers and can not find any reference to Benjamin Hartley. I have not seen my request for help yet as I was told it would have to go through the moderator. can you direct me please.

The reply states Benjamin was buried in a common grave.
And lists the location of grave at Hunslet.

Hello Brian
I will pass on your thanks to my brother and let him know you've found the location of the grave - hopefully there might be some records of the workhouse at the library that might be useful for you. Good luck with the rest of your research.
Kind regards,

Thanks for the offer Debs.
My lot are in/around Bradford, thankfully none ended in the workhouse.

Hi all, ive been away, and just checked up on this, i had a relative in Hunslet Workhouse, and i rang WYA at Sheepscar, and they said all that survived were a few school minutes , from 1920 onwards the only info available is on the workhouse website. :(
I was hoping to find out when my gt grandfather entered the workhouse.
