Title: Your ancestor's addresses in Taunton
Post by: Bozzer on Friday 22 April 05 01:07 BST (UK)
If your like me, you may wish to know where your family lived and if their old house still exists - and if it does, what does it look like.

I have no specific detailed census information to help you but if you have ancestors' census addresses in the Taunton area that you would like a modern photo of for your records - let me know and I can hopefully e-mail one to you.

Hi Bozzer,
can you have a look at 264 Trinity St Taunton, this is for 1828, maybe a bit late

What a kind offer !

I would be very grateful if you could let me know where 10 North Town Terrace is, and if it is still standing.

My Smith ancestors were there for the 1871-1901 censuses, and one of their sons lived next door at No 12.

Many thanks in advance.

Stephen

To Jackg2 and Footie -

I've got both your addresses and my camera is in the car. Leave both of them with me for a day or so and I'll see what I can do.

North Town was just that - The area North of the river that grew rapidly after the railway arrived in 1842. Most of is still standing (but for a few minor road adjustments) and I will locate North Town Terrace on a few oldmaps and see what I can find for you this week.

Similarly, Trinity street is still there, however, the old hospital was redeveloped 10-15 years ago and the old workhouse (also in Trinity street) was fairly heavily redeveloped 5-10 years ago. Again, I'll have a look and see what I can find.

I'll be intouch

Footie - I'm struggling with North Town Terrace at the moment. Do you have any details from your census returns? I need to narrow down an area with perhaps a parish or anything else....?

It almost certainly still exists but many old terraces are now known by their number and the road that they are on. Buildings often have the original name of a terrace shown on them but are not necessarily know by the same name now. I need to narrow down an area.

Thanks

Thanks for looking. Here's what I have - not sure if they're all the same address or if they moved around between 1871 and 1891 !?!?

1841 - Stream Lane, Taunton
1871 - North Town, Taunton
1881 - 10 Elms Parade, Taunton
1891 - 10 North Town Terrace, Taunton
1900 - 10 North Town, Taunton (death certificate)
1901 - 10 North Town, Taunton

Thanks again

Hi,
I have just read your message, if you are still interested in taking pictures, if you are able, I'd love to see where my John Henry Sharp and his family lived if it still exists... 14 Penfield Street as on the 1871 Census,
Thanks.... Carol

Hi carol,

Penfield Street is not a name that springs to mind as still being in existance but I may be wrong. What Parish does the census return show and I'll have a look at some maps and see where it is or where it was.

Of course, it may not be Penfield Street, just the enumerators handwriting may be awful
