Title: no name of father on marriage record on free reg??
Post by: ciaobella on Sunday 20 March 11 18:51 GMT (UK)
I've found the marriage of one of my ancestors on free reg but there's no name of the father, how can i find out who his father was?  What other resources can i try? He married in 1802.

Many regards
Louise

Fathers names do not appear on marriage entries prior to 1.7.1837.

Hi

In 1802 marriage registers did not give fathers name. That commenced in 1837 when civil registration began. In 1802 a marriage entry gave names, date, whether by banns or license, whether of the parish or not, often marital status and sometimes occupation and the names of the two witnesses who could be relatives.

Thanks for that info, i'm suprised i didnt know it already! The witness belongs to his wife's family so no luck there.  I guess i've hit that brick wall again...
