Hi I posted this an the Chell thread but no takers so hoping someone can help here.
I still looking for parents marriage: on the marriage certificate of Alfred Charles Chell he says his mothers name was Chell maiden name Andrews. His father Alfred Chell.
I have had some help on here and nobody can find andrews/chell marriage though.
However I have come across a likely father prospect on the 1911 census called Alfred John Chell, 29 single no 78 ( corp?) RGA, born Fulham and an acting bombardier, tracing him back puts him in paddington 1901 and Chelsea 1891. Broadly the same areas Florence E Andrews came from
Could someone do a forces marriage look up with variants as we Shell and Clell have proved fruitful in searches:
Florence E Andrews to Alfred John Chell the son was born Dec 1917
I am guessing she married around 1916 as there are no other children to this union I know of. (I have no idea of her age so a search from 1900 but not later than 1928 would cover extremes)
Thanks :)

His birth was registered as SHELL per the other thread at reply #50:
Birth Mar qtr 1918
SHELL Alfred C (mother's maiden name ANDREWS)
Lambeth 1d 464
After a great deal of searching, it didn't look as though his parents had ever married; indeed when his mother Florence married a Mr BIRCH some 10 years later she married as Florence ANDREWS rather than CHELL/SHELL (as per reply #48 on the other thread).

When I saw the number of pages and replies on the other thread - I gave up and just copied the link!!
If the conclusion is that his parents never married - I wonder why a further request for a marriage lookup has been made?

For the sake of completeness I can say that there is no evidence of a military marriage at any time for Alfred John CHELL and Florence ANDREWS - which is perhaps unsurprising since Alfred's military records show that he was discharged medically unfit in early 1912, those records showing no trace of his already being married at the time of discharge.
Alfred John CHELL seems likely to have married a Daisy PIPKIN in Midhurst in 1920, and to have died in Midhurst in Dec qtr 1926 aged 44 (age consistent with his Mar qtr 1882 birth registration).

Thanks avm228 for filling CaroleW in, I didnt think all that was pertinent here so reposted to try and gain clarity without the link, so as not to encourage people wade thru it all in case they lost interest.
Thank you too for eliminating that as a marriage possibility avm 228! You very modestly have not mentioned that it was your genius move that found his birth under Shell.
I fully understand the maiden name at the Dover marriage indicates no previous marriage. And was happy with that for 2.5 years. However someone has turned up a wedding photo of that era marked "Flo and Fred" (before they started doing clothes for a supermarket!). I havent got my mitts on a copy yet and am unlikely to do so. Flo and Alf would have been a bit more convincing but I thought it was worth revisiting.
I cant prove a marriage didnt take place, only that it did. I try to be thorough.
If I turn up any ideas, I will be looking for a marriage for a while yet.
No stone unturned.

I am all for being thorough!
Do post the marriage photo if you can get hold of it - but isn't that likely to be Florence marrying Frederick BIRCH, which she did in 1928? (Perhaps she had a thing for chaps with "fred" somewhere in their name!).
In the interests of thoroughness it might be worth your getting a copy of the 1920 CHELL/PIPKIN marriage cert mentioned above?

First point drat! Forgot Birch could have been the Fred. Too focussed on AlFred.Yes I really do have to have a look at that but its very unlikely.
Second, how would that marriage cert help?
Assuming for a minute that he is illegitimate I think I read somewhere that the government had a drive for a new bastardy law or similar to get soldiers to live up to their responsibilities so the tax payer wasnt funding soldiers indiscretions. Women were encouraged to bring actions and get finance and it went on service the record? Alfred John married or not, could still be in the frame
Anybody got any ideas if I am able to trace that any way, of course its again unlikely. I cant see women wanting to be further humiliated in that day and age, easier to pretend they were married and widowed in the midst of a war.
