I recently found that my great great great grandmother was Catherine Trayford of Blatherwycke, she resided in Bridge Street, Brigstock in 1841 aged 25 (although I believe she was probably around 27). The query I have is that her name changes on every subsequent census, even allowing for spellings at the time it seems a bit excessive. Can anyone offer an explanation?
1841 Catherine Trayford
1851 Caton Trayfield
1861 Catherine Traford
1871 Catherine Twyfoot
Also most if not all of her children moved to Morley near Leeds (a mining district) and stopped using the Trayford surname and used their middle name of Bell. Her son George Henry B Trayford/Trayfield married using the name Trayford in 1864, but his children were registered as Bell and he is on the 1871 census as George Bell. I'm wondering if they were ashamed of the name for any reason?
Many thanks in advance if anyone can help.

She was unmarried (certainly in 1851), so I assume that Bell was the name of the father of the children?
Seems they just reverted to using the father's name.
Perhaps he acknowledged them as his children at some point?

Hi Karen,
We must be related as all the Northamptonshire TRAYFORD's are related.
William Trayford 1799 of Baltherwycke is my 3x great grandfather.
I have done a one name study of the Trayfords and remember seeing Catherine but couldn't link her in with her parents.
This will be great getting one of my mysteries sorted out.
First time using Rootschat so not sure of how its going to work or how I can contact you privately.

Hi Elaine
I've emailed you privately - I think you're right. From my working out we both have several times great grandparents in common (William Trayford and Nancy Ann Brown).
My branch moving to the Morley area of Leeds (mining) as did a quite a few from the Brigstock area - another branch moving into mining areas of North Yorkshire.
Regards
Karen

Hello, I understand this is quite late from the original post! Unsure if you will even see this. Catherine Trayford has come about in my family tree research over this past weekend. From the top of my head I think her daughter Georgina had a daughter called Annie, who was my great, great Grandmother. My most recent ancestors are indeed from the Morley area of Leeds.
The whole surname issue has been a bit of a challenge for me, as you can imagine. I've looked all over findmypast for birth or census records and only managed to find the 1841 census after searching for her son Jonathan. I found the "unmarried" note also quite interesting.
Again, I understand this is over 9 years late! If you have any further information on her I would be incredibly grateful.

A number of years ago I researched the Trayford name which became a one name study.
I probably don't have the most recent lines but I have transcribed Blatherwycke Baptisms and did go through the Parish Registers. I placed that transcription on FreeReg.
My tree is extensive. My link starts with Florence Trayford Coles my maternal grandmother born 1890 in Kings Cliffe.Nths.
She later moved to Sheffield with her new husband.
I have John Trayford (Traphat) baptised Richmansworth, Herts. 1677. He was in Blatherwycke at the time of his marriage to Sarah Scott in 1706.
If I can help please let me know. My tree is on Ancestry or FindMyPast.

Hi Elaine
Nice to hear from you again, you helped me a lot when I started my complicated research of this branch of my family. That 1851 census was a godsend - my great grandmother (Catherine's granddaughter) was married under the name Alice Louisa Bell Trayfield... even though her birth surname had been registered as Bell in the Morley area.
I had no knowledge at that time to a connection to Northamptonshire and it perplexed me at the time when the only Trayfields I could find at that time was that 1851 census and after a lot of cross checking, I realised the B in the children's names stood for Bell. My great grandfather George Henry B Trayford ended up in Morley (nr Leeds) along with his sisters Caroline and Georgina/Georgiana and at a later date his mother Catherine herself.
It seems Brigstock and the surrounding area was a hotbed of illegitimacy. Catherine's daughter Caroline married at Joseph Starsmore in Morley (although he too was from Northamptonshire), he was born to two illegitimate parents and changed his names so often it was mind boggling

I had forgotten we had been in touch. LOL Old age.LOL.
I think I may have mentioned before that my husband came from Boston Spa and went to school in Leeds. He worked there (teacher) for a couple of year after we married. We came to Ottawa in 1967. A long time ago now.
If you check FreeReg out you will see the transcription I did for Blatherwycke where many of our clan were born.
If you could keep my e-mail addy around and if I can help at any time contact me that way please.
Have fun
Elaine.
