I have a John RIGBY, son of Thomas RIGBY and Elizabeth WHITESIDE born in Freckleton, Fylde in about 1831. He lived in Dungeon Row in 1841 and Bunkers Hill in 1851 with his parents, and he was a rope maker, as was his father.
By 1861 he was married to Elizabeth and had children James (5), Robert (2) & Elizabeth A. (7mos) and was living in Preston Road, Freckleton - still a rope maker.
Elizabeth was born in Rufford in about 1833.
I would guess that his marriage had to have been between April 1851 and 1856 -i.e. after the census but before the birth of his son, but I have not been able to find it. Can anyone help me to put a surname to his wife Elizabeth, please?

Hi
Welcome to Rootschat.
If you look on Lancs BMD there are quite a few John Rigbys married to an Elizabeth between 1851 and 1861. It could be the John Rigby and Elizabeth Ainscough reg Ormskirk. I think Rufford came under the Ormskirk registration district.
http://lancashirebmd.org.uk/
Looking at Freebmd this was in the September quarter of 1854.
You might be able to check this by finding Elizabeth Ainscough on the 1851 and seeing if her age and POB fits.

Thank-you.
The Rigbys were quite prolific, as were their cousins the Marsdens ::)
I had already had a look at the likely marriages and spotted Elizabeth Ainscough in Q3 1854 in Ormskirk. Your suggestion to look on the 1851 census is a good one.
The only other Elizabeth I could find for Ormskirk was in q1 1859 - Elizabeth Leadbetter, but I think that would be a bit too late.
There are a couple more in Liverpool but as Ormskirk had its own registration district they are not probables.
I also had a look on the Online Parish Clerks site for Rufford St. Mary's between 1837 & 1900 but drew a blank. Ditto Kirkham.

Hi,
The childrens names (registered in the sub district of Kirkham) all match with the mothers maiden name of Gregson looking at www.lancashirebmd.org.uk . Freckleton would come under the sub district of Kirkham.
Marriage of John Rigby and Elizabeth Gregson at Preston Register Office or a Registrar attended church in 1852.
Regards,
Mo
added: She has been transcribed as Elizabeth Greyvser on Ancestry in 1851 ::) aged 17 born Rufford and living in Freckleton. Apologies YonderPeasant I didn`t see your post before I added this.

Thanks Allan. I thought as much, but it's good to have confirmation of it. Are the Rigbys in your direct line?
