Hi,
Attached is an unidentified picture from my mothers treasure box..inscription on back..Glasgow Edinburgh & Greenock.
I can post pictures of my grand parents in their 60's if a match could be made from that.
Thanks

Right around the start of the war, Kaz...about 1914 or so.

Thank you China,
It's hard to tell as they worked so hard back then, but what age do you thinks she would be ? Do you see a wedding ring?
Thanks
Karen

Hi Kazza...I can see a wedding ring and I think she looks to be in her twenties.

Thanks Carol,
I'm now thinking it could be my maternal grandmother b. 1897 -and the picture was perhaps taken in their home town of Greenock just before my grandfather went off to WW1.. they marrried Feb 1915 my grand father went off to WW1 June 1915..
Great.. i will post a picture of my grandmother side by side at a later date... for a comparison
Thanks heaps

My pleasure Karen...I know you didn't ask for a clean but I took the creases out and smartened it up a bit.
Carol

Could be a wedding photo then, for her husband to carry off to war with him :-\
Cheers,
China

Carol:- WOW... thanks it does look much smarter.
China:- Don't think a wedding picture !. but definitely a picture of his new bride to carry off to war.
Thanks guys.

Why don't you think it would be a photo taken at the time of her wedding? No wedding dress? That's a pretty modern invention and a great and wasteful luxury. Many people got married in a best outfit....and didn't necessarily get a bride&groom photo taken. Most couples were photographed, but separately.
Sounds completely alien, I know :)

Hi China,
Thankyou, i didn't know that.
I have attached ( i think !! ) a picture of my paternal grand parents on their wedding day..very different.
Thanks
Karen
-
Yes, very different...much more what we're used to seeing. About 1926 or so?
Cheers,
China

Thanks China, i appreciate the feed back
I suppose when you look at the dates and locations there is bound to be a variance ..maternal grandparents married 1915 in Scotland & paternal grandparents 1928 NSW Australia.
Thanks

-
NO !! but thanks Jim.. The comparison i need is between the 1st post...single female standing & last posted picture of elder lady in family shot..the one you have compaired it to was only posted as an example of wedding dress outfits of long ago.
Thanks
Karen

Oh - I definitely see the young lady in your first post being the older lady in the last one. Definitely a possibility. :)

I can't date photos which is why I rely on the lovely people on this site, but as a qualified passport examiner, we look for ears, eyebrows and then turn the photos upside down to compare eye brows and shape of jaw lines. Strange I know but it works, ears and shape of eye brows don't change much
;)

How interesting! How does the eyebrow-jaw shape work?
I'd seen passport people turning the things upside down but never knew why!

Not sure of the science, but I think it makes you concentrate on areas u don't usually look at,and allows u to see them in a different light, people are drawn most often to the eyes in a photo, and these change as do your cheek bones as u put on or loose weight and grow older, your eye brows and jaw line show your skull shape.
Try it, it works (along with the ears if you can see them lol) Apparently someone recently was charged for his ear print as it is as individual as a finger print)

Yes, we look at ears and noses when trying to decide if a person in one old photo is the same as in another one...if we really want to make a big deal of it we look at the distance between pupils, width of mouth, length of philtrum and length of face from the eyeline to the bottom of the chin. But I never heard of the eyebrow thing :)

You Jim and Pru r the experts on here, never gonna argue with what u say :-)
Sounds like its all the same science, trying to see the shape of the skull, if u think of it your eyebrows mirror the skull underneath, they only move up or down other things can stretch, shrink or get fat, but definitely recommend turning the photo upside down.
btw I still have lots of photos which require your expert opinion on dating on this site, just haven't uploaded them yet, so look forward to your help
