Does anyone have ANY info on these families in Newport? They came over from Ireland originally. I've got what I can (I think) from the Census records.
Michael Sexton (b.1855) m. Mary Fitzgerald (b.1857)
Children: James, Margaret, Geraldine, Michael (Gus?), Lena (Kathleen), Katherine and John
Mary's parents were James and Margaret - Mary is my Great-Grandmother's (Alice) sister.
Mary's siblings: Abigail, John, James, Alice and Margaret
I'm unable to trace what happened to the rest (except Alice) of the Fitzgerald family and all the Sextons. I believe perhaps that the Sextons went to USA as did the Fitzgeralds

Hello and welcome to RootsChat
It seems some of the Sexton children used their middle names as forenames
I know you said you have census details - but 1901 census gives children's middle names -and so could help with the search

Thx v.m. Suz, I got that from the census - just didn't want to put very long post with all the details.
I think Michael was known as Gus as his middle name was Augustus, and Michael was also his father. I got the name Gus Sexton from my family, but this was the only one close that I could find, and the fact that his sister was known as Lena (family told me Kathleen) also seems to fit.
I was actually after info that I can't find on census, like what happened to them (Sexton & Fitzgerald) after Newport - did they go to USA or elsewhere? Probably stuff that can only be provided by their descendants. I was also told that one of them - don't know which - became Mayor of Newport!
Also, by way of marriages, I've got following:
James Sexton m. Clara Edwards
Geraldine Sexton m. Thomas Jones
Lena Sexton m. William Mortimer
Many thanks.

Hi - it is always good to post middle names if they have them -it makes searching much easier
Like Geraldine Alice married Thomas W Jones (with a name like Jones in Wales we need every little bit of information we can get
Do you subscribe to An*****y?
If so you can find marriages deaths children etc -we can look up some for you - but are not allowed to post details of the living/maybe living/recently deceased
James and Margaret Fitzgerald were mary's parents??
so is John Fitzgerald widower age 64 who was boarding with the Sextons in 1891 - any relation???
Margaret A Sexton age 10 in 1891 b Aldershot Surrey ? Do you have her marriage or wherabouts??

, and the fact that his sister was known as Lena (family told me Kathleen) also seems to fit.
Lena Sexton m. William Mortimer
Many thanks.

Suz,
Ys thx, I've got full access to Ancestry, Find My Past, Genes Reunited and RootsIreland.
As I said, it's info 'outside' of these that I really need. Thx tho for the death info on Lena - I hadn't got to that yet.
-
Maybe there is someone on GenesReunited who has members of the family in their tree??
and you could get more personal information that way
Suz
-
The John Fitzgerald residing with the Sexton's I did find and I believe that's a brother of James.
-
No hits on GenesReunited yet for Sexton and only incorrect matches for Fitzgeralds so far.
-
I've noticed on another posting you have Michael Sexton married Mary Fitzgerald had a son Michael and they went to Aus or US??
It looks like Michael Sexton (the father) died- death reg Mar qtr 1902 Newport M
also when he married Mary it looks like he was in the armed forces (Royal Artillery
Their son Michael Augtustus(birth reg as Michael Augustine) may have joined the armed forces too???
There is a medal card on A******y for Michael A Sexton in a Monmouthshire regiment???
Suz
-
Yes, Suz, Michael Snr was a Driver in Royal Artillery, but later became a labourer (Wharf Labourer)
Mary is listed separately as 'Soldier's wife'. I've also already got his 1902 death in Newport.
I'll look into the service record you mention for Michael Jnr. as this wouldn't be surprising and he was born in Newport, Monmouthshire. Thx.
-
It's not a service record for Michael A -it is a medal card
A high percentage of service records from WW1 were destroyed in WW2 (the Blitz)

Hi, My Grandfather was Michael Augustine Sexton born 1891 died 1972, born and died in Newport. He married Olive Adams (1887- 1956) and they both worked and lived in Newport before moving to London. I have a lot of information. Regards

Hi, that's fabulous! It'd be great to get ur info. Thx.
Your Grandfather is a 'First Cousin Once Removed' of my mother - Michael's mother (Mary Fitzgerald) is a sister of my mum's grandmother. This may seem a bit of a 'loose' relationship, as only associated by marriage through Mary; however, my Aunt enjoyed a lot of her childhood being welcomed by 'Auntie' Lena (Michael's sister) and her husband, whom I understand became Mayor of Newport.
If ur on Genes R, then u should be able to pick me up (via family tree) I think to email me from there. Then I can send u my direct email. Sorry if that seems convoluted, but I don't like giving out my contact on public forums. Many thanks.

when chester has made 3 posts you can use the private message facility to exchange info -e mail addresses etc.
If you posted your e address on the public board the mods would remove it -as it is RootsChat policy to not post email details on view to the public.
The PM facility is quite safe

Quite amazed to receive a reply so quickly!!
Yes, we do need to make email contact somehow to share info. I am not on GR. My grandparents worked at the Workhouse in Newport- that is where they met, and I believe they became Master & Matron of the facility. I visited Newport for the first time this year...............interesting! Regards

I'm quick because I'm very actively pursuing my family history. My mum is 70+ now and her elder sister (the Aunt mentioned before) is not in best health, so I thought it'd be nice to give some info on the Sextons as she enjoyed time with Lena.
If you had any info on the Fitzgerald side in respect of your Great-Grandmother, this would be welcomed too as I've struggled to find much regards many of them.
I'm coming to conclusion that I'm probably related (distantly) to much of Newport population. My mum's paternal grandparents' families (Fitzgerald and Murray) both came from Ireland and settled for long time in Newport.
I too went to visit Newport for the first time this year - only just back in March - and met with a 4th cousin. As you say.... interesting place! Regards J
