Title: Help with Ellithorne please
Post by: Lizzielogs on Tuesday 15 March 11 21:25 GMT (UK)
Hi

I have just started researching my step-fathers family with the surname of 'Ellithorne' (his origins are Preston, Lancashire), on the 1841 census there is a dubious entry for one family called Ellithorne (ish!) with what looks like Ellithorne Farm written in the margin (but that night be wishful thinking on my behalf!)
Is there anywhere I can look to see the origin of the name, Google doesn't come up with anything helpful?
Is it unusual for only one entry for a particular surname to appear on a census?
How do surnames just appear and how could I find anything before 1841, does anyone have access to parish records or anything like that?
Any help would be fantastic
Thank you
regards (from Spain)

does anyone have access to parish records or anything like that?

Have you tried Lancashire OPC (http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/)? (Just enter 'Ellithorne' in the surname field)

Also try: Family Search (https://www.familysearch.org/) and FreeREG (http://www.freereg.org.uk/)

Thank you, Lancashire OPC has a wealth of info. I would never have found that site!

Hi,

For births etc from 1837 you may also want to search www.lancashirebmd.org.uk .  For the Preston area the births have the mothers maiden name included  ;D .  It may be better to select "soundex" as there are various spellings of the name.

Regards,
Mo

For further variations of surnames you might like to try this Name Thesaurus (http://www.namethesaurus.com/Thesaurus/) (also useful for forenames)

There is a William Ellithorne age 70 in the 1841 census living in the Shambles, Preston, Lancashire. He is listed as being a Butcher. Also in the household is my 4 x Great Grandmother Ellen Winn (nee Hodgkinson and several other relatives of my family.

Ellen Winn died in 1842 and in her will she leaves provision that William Ellithorne should have board and lodgings during his life, provided by Ellen's children Joseph Winn and Margaret Newsham (nee Winn)

I am not sure of the relationship was between William Ellithorne and Ellen Winn???
