Anyone with an interest in Forrests from Carluke?
-
Welcome to Rootschat. I've used this site for years. Think you'll enjoy it and get a lot of help should you need it.
PS - I'm Dave, Mike's pal. ;D

Hi Mingulay
I have an interest in Forrests from Carluke.
Liz
-
I have an interest in Forrest - Carluke. John Forrest + Amelia Gordon Robertson.
-
I've done some research on Forrests from Carluke - though I'm not related. James Forrest and Agnes Scott married in Cambusnethan parish on 10/11/1810. I've found three children born at Braidwood in Carluke parish - Robert 11/03/1812; Margaret 29/03/1815; Hilen (Helen) 18/08/1817. Helen married Thomas Lindsay, who was later Station Master in Biggar.
James Forrest died 08/04/1857 at Woodhall, Carluke (parents Robert Forrest and Helen Hamilton); Agnes Scott died 25/12/1867 at Poplar Glen, Carluke.

I have a link -through a marriage.
Martha Forrest born Carluke in 1829 married Robert Dewar.
Martha was the daughter of William Forrest and Euphemia Reid.
-
Martha Forrest was the sister to my 3x gr grandmother Jane (Jean) Forrest, parents Willian Forrest b. about 1798 & Euphemia Reid b. about 1802.
I know William Forrest's parents were Robert Forrest b. about 1762 & Isabel Frame b. about 1772 & that he had at least one brother Robert b. about 1794.
-
There is a Scott/Forrest headstone in the old churchyard in Carluke
-
I haven't really done any checking into Martha's family , her marriage to Robert Dewar made a relation through my grandmother (a Dewar)
Martha FORREST, was born on 3 February 1829 in Carluke, Lanarkshire, Scotland.
She married Robert DEWAR on 22 July 1849 in Carluke.
She appeared in the census for Carluke in 1851, 1861, 1871 & 1881
Martha died of Disease of the Kidneys (2 years) on 5 March 1891 in Carluke.
Robert DEWAR, son of George DEWAR (1800-1857) and Mary GOLD (1803-1843), was born in 1831 (approx.) in Carluke. He appeared in the census for Carluke in 1841, 1851, 1861, 1871 & 1881
Robert was an Ironstone Miner rising to Pit Oversman before he died of Miners Asthma on 14 April 1889 in Kirkton Street , Carluke. He and Martha FORREST had the following children:
George DEWAR (1850?- bef 1950 ).
William DEWAR (1853-1855).
William DEWAR (1856-1910).
Robert DEWAR (1858-1912).
Euphemia DEWAR (1861-1925).
Peter DEWAR (1863-bef1990).
Mary DEWAR (1865-1911).
James DEWAR (1867- ).
John DEWAR (1870-bef1969).
Alexander DEWAR (1873-1943).

Hi all. I wonder if these people are related to my family. Helen Forrest who married John Scott in lanarkshire
-
I may be a descendant of Helen and John Scott. They were married in Lesmahagow Lanarkshire. My ancestor is Frederick Willim Scott who some have as a son of Helen and John and others say no. He came to Western Australia at the same time to the southwest also and was very young. If you have any information as to who Frederick belongs to that would be great. He was born about 1820 and was known as William.
My exhusband is a descendant of Daniel McGregor.
-
Hi
William Frederick or Frederick William is not as Son of John Scott & Helen Forrest
I am related to both families and am conducting pretty heavy research regarding the histories for the past 15/16 years
There is a possibility that William could be related distantly back in Scotland to this family but not directly as a descendant.
I have been unable to prove any link to date.
I am writing a book on these families, and would love to know who your ex-Husband is.
-
Just wondering if anyone is still researching/following Forrests of Carluke?
I have just come across this thread & recognised the surname which is in my ex - husband's line.
I have;
Isabella Wilson Forrest b 1873 to George c1841 & Elizabeth Bertram Logan married 1873 Lanark
Isabella married William Paterson 1893 Broomgate, Lanark
George Forrest c1841 to George & Isabella Wilson 1838, Carmichael, Lanark
Do these names ring a bell with anyone?

I'm researching my family the Fells of Lanarkshire. We've two Fell's in a relationship two Forest/Forrest of Carluke. I found misspells during my searches hence Forest/Forrest. Might be key to finding more.
William Fell (b abt 1777 - d aft 1851 Ontario, Canada) had an illegitimate child with Agnes Forest (b 29/May/1783 - d ?) James Fell (b 1813 Carluke- 1873).

William had another illegitimate child Johnston Fell before he was married.

I have just picked up this thread and wanted to correct Rosinish's parents for Isabella Wilson Forrest.
Isabella (Bella) Wilson Forrest was my grandmother's sister. She was born 31 August 1871 in Old Machar, Aberdeen.
Her parents were James S Forrest (b 7 June 1844 Old Machar, Aberdeen, d 7 February 1931 Old Machar), and Isabella Hendry (b 25 June 1847 Old Machar, d 9 March 1933 Aberdeen). They were married 30 September 1870.
Isabella Wilson Forrest married William Patterson (b 1865) in 1893.

-
I'm having second thoughts about my Isabella Wilson Forrest being married to William Patterson, as I have just found her still living with her parents at 314 Dumbarton Road, Govan on the 1901 Census. She was a dressmaker.
I haven't been able to find her date of death.

Just getting started in Forrest/Forest family in Lanarkshire and Kincardineshire. Anyone have any ideas on the family of Robert Forrest b. ca 1730 m. ca 1758 Margaret Porteous ??? Was John Forrest, merchant of Bervie, Scotland and b. 1759 their son?? This John Forrest had the first linen-yarn mill in 1790 in Kincardineshire. Anyone got any y-DNA results to help separate the several Forrest families? any wills/testaments??/sasines??

Hi Joan,
Looks like you have a different family altogether ???
Isabella Wilson Forrest b 1873 to George c1841 & Elizabeth Bertram Logan married 1873 Lanark
Isabella married William Paterson 1893 Broomgate, Lanark
However, drawn to check things out incase I had erred, I noticed a typo & George Forrest was likely born c 1849 not 1841 ::)

Hi I am researching a family of Forrests from Carluke. They are descended from George Forrest and Isabella Wilson. The same couple, I believe, that Rosinish mentioned.
In the 1871 Carluke census I have George and Isabella living with
James son unmarried aged 32
Georgina dau. unmarried aged 26
George son unmarried aged 22
Margaret or Mary Telford dau unm aged 22
Alexander son unm aged19
Robert son unm aged 16
Margaret Telford Forrest niece unm aged 22
Laurence Forrest Ritchie grandson ? age
Georgina Forrest Ritchie grand daughter aged 7
and in the house next door I have The other son John Forrest with his wife Catherine and their family.
Anyone else still researching this family? I would be pleased to hear from you and share
-
I am also researching this family I am directly descended from the Georgina Forrest born c1846 d1914
I have results of the 1861 census for Parish 629- Carluke Lanarkshire ie 10 years earlier
George Forrest 44, Born Lamington Lanarkshire
Isabella W Forrest 45, Born St Quivox, Ayrshire
James Forrest 22, Born Pettinian Lanarkshire
William W Forrest 19, Born Shotts Lanarkshire
John Forrest 14, Born Carluke Lanarkshire
George Forrest 12, Born Carluke Lanarkshire
Margaret J Forrest 12, Born Carluke Lanarkshire
Alexander Forrest 9, Born Carluke Lanarkshire
Robert Forrest 6, Born Carluke Lanarkshire
As you can see Georgina my ancestor is not on the census but looking from one census to the other I am fairly confident that this is the same family. The rest of the ages match up and it was not unusual for a 16 year old to be working else where and not on the census at the family residence.
George Forrest is stated as being a coal miner on the marriage certificate of Georgina to Thomas Brown.
So I am working on the presumption that as a coal miner that George moved around a lot following work. This would account for the different birth places of the children. I have George Forrest born in Lamington in 1817 and that would make him 44 on the 1861 census.
There also appears to be twins George and Margaret. Other leads I have further back in the tree also have twins but still to firm this all up.
So how do you tie in. I would love to know.

Hi,
It's been ages since I was really active on RC.
Are there any descendants of the Forrest families from Lanarkshire on here that have undertaken a DNA test through Ancestry, FTDNA or My Heritage?
I'd like to make contact to share and compare results / tree.
I have my results on all 3 sites mentioned, plus Gedmatch. (Gedmatch number T037587)
Dave
PS - If you are a direct male Forrest descendant with documented evidence of your Forrest heritage in Scotland I might be able to arrange a FREE YDNA test (this isn't the same as the standard test you get from Ancestry and such).
I also run a small Facebook group (about 200+ members) that is open to any descendants of Forrest families from Scotland. You'd be welcome to join: https://www.facebook.com/groups/forrests.in.scotland/ (https://www.facebook.com/groups/forrests.in.scotland/)

Hi JulieLanark
So sorry that this has taken so long. I am directly descended from George and Isabella's son John. It's been a while since Ive looked at this branch. I'll need to refresh my memory. The Forrests are a bit of a nightmare because there are so many of them.

I have a Robert Forrest and a Margaret Kerr in the 1800's.
Is it right that they had a child called Eliza/Elizabeth Forrest?
She only died young - 1846 to 1858(?)
I am wondering how she died! I didn't know if any family may know..
Thanks :-).

She was born Elisabeth Forrest in Biggar on 5 Sept 1845 but the birth wasn't recorded on the OPR until 12 May 1847, so presumably that may have been at the time of her baptism. Robert was recorded as a servant at Lindsaylands at that time.
She's recorded as Eliza with her parents in 1851 census at Carstairs.
I've never found her death record.
Without her death record, there is little chance of finding a cause of death.
Robert and Margaret married 4 Dec 1840 and I have records of 7 children, Elisabeth/Eliza being the 3rd.
Robert later married Mary Hamilton in 1881 in Lesmahagow and died 8 Sep 1905, also in Lesmahagow. The death record confirms both spouses.
Robert is descended from Alexander Forrest and Elizabeth Whitelaw.
I have no other info on Elisabeth/Eliza.

I just came across this, but their where 4 other children born and not listed. I am a descendant of this family as Alexander was my g grandfather. Been trying to locate the correct births and deaths of the mentioned but cant seem to find more of the following siblings...Margaret Ann, George, Robert and John
-
4043,
It may be an idea to post exactly what info. you do have with dates/places to help others connect?
Maybe an insight as to how you discovered the other 4 children...where/when?
Are those 4 children of Robert Forrest & Margaret Kerr?
Annie

Robert Forrest & Margaret Kerr where the parents of my ggrandfather Alexander. His son George was my grandfather who emigrated to Canada. Another George his brother born 1849, Robert born 1857 John born 1858 also a sister Margaret Ann 1861. My information comes from searching through Scotslandpeople, Wikitree, My heritage etc. numerous websites so birthdates may not be exact, but for sure Alexander and his wife Agnes Watson are correct. If you have more information on this family I would appreciate hearing from you......A Carter

I refer back to my previous comments. Not my family as far back as I've traced, but they descend from Alexander Forrest and Elizabeth Whitelaw. Lauren Bailey who has posted on this thread, is researching the same line (I think her husbands line), and also someone I have spoken with called Sheena Vdvoort, and a chap called Richard Laslett.
You might all have spoken previously, but I'm trying to connect as many folk researching Forrest as possible, whether related to me or not.
I run a small group on Facebook which any resaerchers of Forrest are welcome to join. Might help you (us) connect.

What yr was your ancestor George born & do you have his baptism/birth record?
There seems to be a gap in births 1849 - 1857 but no clue as to when your George was born/where?
Do you have records for all those baptisms/where in that period?
Do you have the marriage/date/age etc. of your George & details of his parentage?
Which of the above records do you have from scotlandspeople as wiki/myheritage are others trees/info. which may/may not be verified?

First I am already on Daves facebook site regarding Forrests. Upon checking I may have found the wrong information as My grandfather George was born in Douglas/Lanarkshire in 1888, and his father Alexander was born (I believe) in Biggar/Lanarkshire, 1841 and his siblings where Elizabeth 1845, Grace 1843, It looks like Robert, George, Margaret, John where of another Forrest not connected to mine. My info came from the 1891 Census of Scotland. I do believe I have the correct information regarding Robert his parents being Alexander born 1797, and mother Elizabeth Whitlaw born 1799.
I also came across that maybe Robert had a second wife Mary Hamilton , Margaret died when?
-
Deleted previous reply as I typed incorrect info as I was rushing. Will repost shortly.
-
Robert Forrest married Margaret Kerr in 1840, Mary Hamilton in 1881, and died 1905. The death record from 1905 confirms both spouses and his parents names. I have a copy of both marriage records and the death record. Details of the 7 children to Robert and Margaret were obtained from a combination of records from Scotlands People, Family search and the census records. Margaret Kerr died 1879 in Lesmahagow. Due to Rootschats regulations about copyright, I can't post the records on here, but if I've not already done it, I'm happy to share them privately or through my FB group.

I'm sure they are. Wish I had time to type up a full transcript for all the documents I have. Alas, as I have thousands of BMD's relating to Forrests I've purchased from SP over the years, it's not feasible. Have always been happy to share the specific downloads with other Forrest researchers descended from those specific lines. SP allows us to share provided not for commercial purposes but unfortunately RC doesn't allow it on these forums. Anyone with known Forrest ancestry in Scotland is welcome to join the Forrest FB group. There, I can freely post the downloads.

Yep. Thanks Annie. Realised that. Have now shared the original documents with 4043 on the Forrest FB group. As I say, unfortunately don't have the time to transcribe them.

Hello again.
Sorry to be so long getting back to you I lost track of my account.
I am descended from Frederick William Scott via my mother whose maiden name was Scott.
I was Married to a son of Murial McGregor who was descended from Daniel McGregor.
I have since done my DNA on Ancestry and along with the information the Frederick Scott actually came from Bath in England I have had a DNA match with his other ancestors which I feel confirms that this is our Frederick William Scott. I have contacted my distant family in Bath.
I hope this information is helpful in confirming that we are not from Helen and John but saying that my children are through their family.

"James Forrest and Agnes Scott married in Cambusnethan parish on 10/11/1810."
I have this couple in my tree. I've done a lot of research using Scotland's People and the historical maps with pretty good success. Trying to track down "Poplar Glen" in Carluke for her death place 1867. I'm assuming it was some sort of old folks home.
Her husband died ten years before at which time her eldest son, Robert, sold Woodhall and immigrated with his kids to Iowa. Daughter, Hilen was married to Thomas Lindsay and living in Biggar. The other daughter was in Illinois.
-
I'd have been astonished if it was an an old folks' home in 1867. At that time, you were either cared for by your family or you went into the poorhouse.
The Ordnance Survey Name Book says Poplarglen is "a small dwellinghouse, one
storey, slated, and in good repair, property of Ja[me]s Gilchrist".
It's marked on the First Edition of the six-inch Ordnance Survey Map, just a couple of hundred yards east of the River Clyde. See https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=17.2&lat=55.70968&lon=-3.87084&layers=257&b=ESRIWorld&o=100 - slide the blue button in the dialog box at lower left to see the satellite view.
and it's still on the modern maps, grid reference NS825478. See https://www.geograph.org.uk/gridref/NS8247 and click on the map to zoom in and see it on the map.
-
Thank you! That is very helpful. I love the maps for Scotland. We did have Gilcrest in the family, but not sure of direct link to this James. But a small cottage is a good guess for an old women. She probably had something of a dower in the will of her husband for her upkeep.
