Title: Looking for James PALMER birth/death Melton Mowbray COMPLETED
Post by: blueowl on Tuesday 15 March 11 13:26 GMT (UK)
I am trying to track a James Palmer possibly born in Melton Mowbray around 1791 and died between 1841 and 1851.

He married a Frances Pears at Great Dalby on 14/1/1813 (marriage record show him coming from the Parish of Melton Mowbray. In 1841 he was living in Melton Mowbray (aged 50).  In 1851, Frances was a widow. They had 2 children that I know of Elizabeth (aged 20 in 1841) and Frances (aged 15 in 1841).

Many thanks.  Blueowl

Hi & welcome to RC & the Leics board.

there are 2 deaths of a James Palmer in Melton registration between 1841 & 1851:

Dec 1842 melton Mowbray 15/149
Sept 1850 Melton Mowbray 15 /133

no way of knowing which is him at this point. maybe Mike will find the burials and there may be a clue if buried with family.

haven't found a baptism yet

James 1814 baptism - they are down as living in Eyekettleby,Melton

burial:
James 22/3/1814 aged 3m Eyekettleby
James 8/9/1850  aged 63  (b.1787) Melton  - think this is the sept 1850 i gave you. -this could be yours as ages on the 1841 census were rounded.

Hello, and thanks for the quick responses.

Yes I found records from FreeBMD of the two deaths in 1842 and 50.
Thanks for the 'extra' three siblings of Frances which I hadn't looked for - is that a searcheable site you can tell me or is it the one in your later post?
I had seen some Eye Kettleby Palmers, but wasn't sure of any link. Could be my James ! Will check out the freereg link.

Many thanks.
Blueowl.

Mike,

many thanks for the last post. I'm fairly new to this lark, so apologies if these are dumb questions !

Assuming this is 'my' James, I've checked the following for his birth/christening (as I have no idea of the names of his parents) :
freereg
the Church of LDS www.familysearch.org site which Diddy referred me to. This one lists a James' baptism on 22/4/1789 at St Marys Leicester. Date not bad, but Leicester, not Melton or nearby.

Any other suggestions to locate his birth/baptism record? His 1841 census record says he was born in Leicestershire. He lived/possibly died in Melton but married in Gt Dalby.

What in your experience is the chance of his gravestone being present & legible if I visited Melton? It may contain some family member information ......

Are the burial records available in image form anywhere on the www?

Regards Blueowl

Greeting’s Blue Owl. ....... & Welcome to the Leicestershire Boards…..

I have had a bit of a dig around…….

A Better Baptism to get closer to your original post of looking for
A James Palmer born c 1791 in the Melton Mowbray Area :~

St: Peter’s Parish Church.
KIRBY BELLARS.

.
BAPTISMS ANNO DOMINI. :~ 1787.

James. Son of Edward & Elizabeth Palmer. ..Bapt. …28th. February.

Kirby Bellars being only 2.7 Miles south west of Melton.

Re:~ survival of a Headstone of aprox 161 years old.?
This will depend on :~
Type of Stone / Slate…….( Slate stood a better chance )
If the face of the stone faced all the bad weather conditions.

And the saddest one. …….
Seems most of the Churches now use outside contractors to keep the grass
Cut and tidy. ……..In doing so most Headstones are removed and propped up against the Church walls in order the mowers have a clear run…
Therefore. …….
You still have no idea where the deceased person’s finial resting place was …….

Mike (& Diddy),
thanks both for your efforts. I reckon I'll get across to Melton at some stage and stop in at Kirby Bellars too.

However, and I'm not sure how this forum works, you can flag this as Completed.

Best Regards
Blueowl.

Hi
James Palmer and wife Frances     James died /buried Sept 5th 1850 Frances April 28th 1858
stones were in King Street Church Cemetery in Melton Mowbray and were read and recorded before St Marys Way went through the middle.
All stones now are round the edge of the site ,as it is a closed burial ground and roadwork took place.

Hope this helps only other Palmer stones which exist are two young boys in the churchyard whose parents came from Nottinghamshre
Hope this helps
best wishes
