Title: Marriage records accuracy
Post by: illjaorterpa on Sunday 13 March 11 20:03 GMT (UK)
Hi

I need some reassurance about the route I have been following re. my 3 x great grandmother. My 3x great grandfather was William Porter b.1819 Coventry son of James & Elizabeth Porter and living at home with them in 1851 census along with his son Arthur In Chauntry Place, COventry. I cannot find a census record for his wife Caroline in 1851 census. In subsequent census ie 1861 together in Aston - she is Caroline Porter b.1825 or 1826 in Everdon. Northamptonshire. On family search website I have found a marriage record in St John church,Coventry for WIlliam Porter and Caroline Makepeace 22 Dec 1842. Which would fit in with the birth of their first child William b.1844. However on Ancestry and FreeBMD the only William Porter marriage around that time was to Caroline Parker. And Caroline Makepeace record were attached to many other different names. So now I am concerned which I believe. The only other evidence is the 1851 census their son William b.1844 Coventry is not at home and is classified at nephew with George Makepeace b.1812 Everdon.  Can anyone shed some light on the mess for me? Have I been following the wrong family and wastes many hours!? Many thanks

If you enter

Caroline Makepeace in the marriages on FreeBMD 1842, you will notice there is an entry for Q4 Coventry 16 515.  The entry for William Porter is 16 513.  If you look at the actual image for Caroline you will see it is indeed 16 513, so it is a match for William.  You will be safe to order the certificate if you wish.

The church record doesn't need to be matched in the same way.

PS I have submitted an error to FreeBMD.

On FreeBMD the record for William Porter is transcribed as page 513 and the record for Caroline Makepeace is transcribed as page 515. I think one of the page numbers has been wrongly transcribed. It is probably the page 515 as each page only has 8 entries, whereas FreeBMD shows 9 entries for this page.
Hope this helps.

Yes thank you. At least I havent been following the wrong tree but it shows how easily it is to get it wrong or not even find the information in the first place. Panic over!!
