Hi Researchers,
Narberth Museum are interested in finding any information about Narberth Gas Works. We have details from the Census returns of the staff that worked there and a very poor photographic image of the gas holder. I've constructed a map overlay on top of the aerial survey photograph to show where the buildings were at Narberth Bridge.
Any information appreciated.

1841 Edmund Allen married Sarah Harse in Bristol area.
1851 Edmund Allen a Greenwich Penioner who says he was born at Ringwood Wilts, but more lightly at Kingswood Gloucestershire was at the Gas Works at Weston Super Mare including staff William Harse and Elizabeth Harse both appear to be working in the Gas Works at Weston.
1861 and Edmund has moved on and is now the Manager of the Gas Works at Hubberston residing with him are Sarah his wife and 7 children including Joseph Allen.
1871 and Edmund has moved on again and is now Working Gas Manager at Narberth Bridge with Sarah and 3 children one Edward has now returned to Weston and is employed in the Gas Works there.
1881 and Edmund is still working at Narberth Bridge but rather bizarre gives Essex as his birth place, it is the same Edmund as proven by the birth place of his daughter living with him who was born at Hakin (Census shows Milford)
24th Oct 1888 Edmund is buried in the Anglican Churchyard Narberth
Joseph Allen son of Edmund follows his father as far as 1881 by which time he has taken up residence at 3 Owen St Orange Gardens Pembroke, a few hundred yards from where I now live.
In 1885 his daughter Frances M. Beatrice Allen is baptised at Monkton St Nicholas.
By 1891 Joseph has moved nearer to his place of work that being Stephenson’s Engineering Works in East Back where he is employed as a wheelwright, a trade he has followed since Weston-super-Mare.
He stays in Eastback but by 1911 he now resides at 14 Albany St Bufferland and is residing in Bufferland in 1918 when his wife is buried He joins her on 25 Sept 1922 at Llanion Cemetery and I have found and cleaned their headstone.
09 Apr 1917 Frances M.B. Allen became the 2nd wife of William Oriel when they married at Pembroke Dock St Johns. William was the son of David Oriel the farm baliff of Caldey Island.
William & Frances moved up the valleys to various locations with Williams work as a manager for the Co-op Society until they resided in Chepstow at Orielton Wyebank Ave they had 4 children, 2 sets of twins, 2 boys and 2 girls.
The Will of Frances was probated 09 July 1969.

I've had a look at Haverfordwest archives and they have some interesting information also I have a picture of a model gas works. This might have been how the Narberth Gas Works looked when in operation.

Was wondering how you got hold of the copy of the black and white photograph of the gas works at Narberth?

The photograph comes from Narberth Museum archives. The original is very poor and this image has been digitally enhanced. Narberth Gasworks is one of our current projects. I am a Museum volunteer and help out with the Photographic Archives as well as being interested in and contributing to several other 'Ongoing' Local History projects.

I was very interested because I have a photo like that one! Amazed to see it on the site . She lived i'n Mill Cottage i'n Mill Lane i'n the 1920-1930's . Thank you for the information .

If you let me know the Surname of the person living in Mill Lane [ 'off line'] then I'll have a word with the Museum Curator, Pauline Griffiths. Pauline has a superb memory and probably can remember all the details on how the image arrived in the archives and if there is any more relevant information relating to this photograph.

My mother's surname was Jones . She
was called Bronwen. Her mother was Eliza Ann and her father was David. David Jones was a postman i'n who was killed on his round i'n 1930 i'n a cycling accident. I have the cutting from the Narberth observer of his funeral i'n Narberth. I would be very interested i'n knowing how the two photographs are so similar.

Many thanks for the details, I'll see what I can find out during the week.
With regards to the photograph I would think that several copies were made from the original negative and possibly distributed to friends or family, or even a neighbour. I did try to replicate the shot last year and tried to get in the same position as the original photographer. This needed access to a Small lane going up the hill to an old quarry. Big notice, beware of the dog and barking coming from a shed. Mission sadly abandoned, don't like big dogs!
I have been in photography all my life and sometimes have produced over a hundred copies off one picture that have been sent worldwide. I also sorted out our family photo archive when parents and Grandparents died. Many of the photographs were duplicates from different sources. Some photographs of myself and my brother had comments on the reverse made by unknown persons! Never did find out who they were, or why they had copies of the photograph.

Hi Dave,
I've had a word with Narberth Museum Curator and it seems that the photograph of Mill Lane, Narberth was a 'one off' item. The photograph is in a mixed Narberth Collection and does not have any accompanying information.
The Museum does have old photographs of Narberth Postmen and I will put something together as a separate thread.
