Hi Everyone,
I am planning a visit to Leeds this June. I would like to research my Nallan/Byron/Moran/Dixon/Edward family while I am there. The Nallan and Byron families came in 1848. They married in St. Anne's Church. They had 10 children. The Nallans then married into the Moran/Edward/Dixon families. The churches they attended were Parish Church and Mt. St. Mary's. Could anyone suggest where I should go to get the best research done. I know that there might be a possibility that there are cousins still living in the area. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Hello Mary.....
Is this part of your family ?
1871 Census
Cawood Yard , Leeds
James Nallan / head / age 42 / Labourer / born Ireland
Annie Nallan / wife / age 46 / housekeeper / born Ireland
Anthony Nallan / son / age 21 / mechanic / born Yorkshire
James Nallan / son / age 18 / mechanic / born Yorkshire
Ann Nallan / daughter / age 13 / scholar / born Northumberland
The first place I would visit, would be the Family History Section of
Leeds Reference Library.
Calverley Street
Leeds LS1 3AB
Tel 0113 2478290
You could also try Yorkshirebmd, which is a free online database of births marriages and deaths
of the Yorkshire region. I found Anthony Nallan who married Mary McGannon in 1874 at Leeds Registered Building, for example.
If you have a particular person you would like help with, let us know on Rootschat, and we could kick start your research before you arrive.
Hope this helps a little

Hi JeannieR
Thank you for the great suggestions. The census record you found must be a cousin of my Anthony Nallan or a nephew, since I don't think Nallan is very common during that time. My Anthony Nallan and Bridget Byron came over to Leeds in 1848ish from Co. Mayo.
They had 10 children that I know of. I have all the census records for them. All the birth records of the children. All the marriages of the them and all the children records. I think they even had a few more babies that died, but those I never found. Spent money on death records that turned out to either James Nallan's or another familly there at the time.
Out of the children, two stayed in England. All the rest came to NY. They would be Margaret Nallan who married a Roberts and Bridget Nallan who married a Moran. I have found both of them on the 1911 Census records, where I learned of their children and my GGGrandmother was living with Bridget along with my Great Grandmother. My Great Grandmother comes to NY in 1922 to be with her brothers and her children, Michael and Mary.
One of the Morans, Nellie, married a Dixon. I have their burial information.
I would to learn:
If there are any Dixons, Morans or Roberts living there still. Or how I could folllow them after 1911 Census (directories of some sort)
Also, I would love to find out where in Co. Mayo the Nallans and Byrons came from. Would there be any burial info at churches of where they were from?
I am so excited to go to Leeds. Can't wait!
Thank you!.

Hello again.....
Be very aware, when researching the Nallan family, how very mistranscribed the name can be !!
I found the marriage of Anthony NALLAN to Bridget BYRON, which took place 1850, in at least two census they are called MALLAN...Here they are in 1871
Musgrave Fold, Leeds
Anthony Mallan / head / age 41 / born Ireland
Bridget / wife / age 42 / born Ireland
Ann / daughter / age 19 / born Yorkshire
Patrick / son / age 17 / born Yorkshire
Ellen / daughter / age 10 / born Yorkshire
Catherine / daughter / age 7 / born Yorkshire
Martin / son / age 6 / born Yorkshire
Mary / daughter / age 5 / born Yorkshire
Thomas / son / age 4 / bron Yorkshire
Margaret / daughter / age 0 / born Yorkshire
This is just in case you do not know all the childrens names

Hi JeannieR,
Yes, I have that one also. I was lucky to find every census starting from 1851 to 1911. When my grandmother came over to NY in 1922, she lists her mom living 20 Bertha Crescent. And when my uncle Mike came over in 1924, he mentions his kin, Aunt Margaret Roberts living at 24 Bertha Mount.

Hi Again Mary....
I have the CDrom of the Electoral Registers of Leeds 1937
Bridget . Anthony , Martin and Margaret , are still living at 20, Bertha Crescent.
This street , no longer exists, but if you go to www.leodis.org You will probably be able to see a photograph of it, and any other address you may be intested in. It is a free site
Martin Moran died in 1983
Jeannie
-
Oh My Goodness!
Okay, let me get this straight.
Bridget Moran? And her three children? Blimey.
John Moran and Nellie Moran (Nellie Dixon) are the only ones not listed. Wow, does that mean those three never married?
I wonder if John married or came over to the USA.
Thank you!
Is this a CD that I would be able to look at when I go to the Leeds Library?
Mary
-
I was wondering how you knew Martin died. Are there records that are available for the 1980's. Was there an address for him?
Mary
You have made me very excited with all this information!
Thank you.

This is a link to Leeds Central Library and shows what records they hold.
It is a good place to visit with very helpful staff.

Why, thank you! I will check it out right away.
Would anyone know if the addresses of 20 Bertha Crescent and 24 Bertha Mount were owned or rented?
If owned, are there deeds available to research?
Thanks
Mary

Just checked out that site. Wow, I am going to be very busy tonight writing all this info down to be prepared for my trip.
Thank you ever so much.

Hi,
Two other archive's well worth a visit are:
http://www.yorkshireroots.org.uk/visiting.html
http://www.archives.wyjs.org.uk/wyjs-archives-leeds.asp
Leeds Central Library has very helpful staff who will advise you whether a visit to the above will be useful for your particular research.

Hi Mary
I've found some burials of Nallans in Leeds.
Bridget Nallan age 69, buried 1896
Bridget Nallan, age 87, buried 1924, of 20 Bertha Crescent. (there is a photo of the headstone for this grave)
Both of these were buried in Leeds Catholic Cemetery in Killingbeck, Leeds.
John Nallan, child, buried 1865 in Beckett Street Cemetery.
I got this information from the Yorkshire Indexers website http://www.yorkshireindexers.co.uk. You have to pay a subscription to see the records though, but it doesn't cost a lot.
You can check out your family births, marriages and deaths at www.freebmd.org.uk , or at www.yorkshirebmd.org.uk which also gives you the church or registry office where they were married. There are quite a lot of Nallans for you to see!
Happy hunting!

Hi Everyone,
I want to thank all of you for such great information. I appreciate all of it. Thank you for taking the time to look up my family. There were 10 children to this family, so there are a lot of Nallans. The more I dig, the more I feel that I won't be meeting any cousins when I go. It seems the two families that stayed in Leeds gave me that possibility. But, the Roberts only had two children, with Mary dying before the age of 10...and the son dying in WWII. With the Morans, I thought I would have more luck. But it seems that Nellie who married John James Dixon was my only bet. With the info given to me about the 1937 electoral it seems that three children are still living with Margaret Roberts....not married? Maybe I could continue on the Dixon line. Then, there is one more son, John, Moran that I do not know what happens to him. So, the search continues. But it is never ending, is it?
THANK YOU ALL!!

Hi Again Mary.......
I have found your Nellie Dixon and her husband, living at 24, Gledhow Terrace, Burmantofts in 1937. People under the age of 21 are not listed, as they are not able to vote.
Are you Missing a Charles Nallon ? He was the son Charles and Harriet , and born 1905 Leeds.
He married a Carolina Burke in 1928, and had two sons, one of them appears to be still alive and living in Leeds ( I will pass on details in a PM , if you think he is "Yours"
In 1937 Charles and Carolina were living at 16 Aysgarth Road, Osmondthorpe
Also at 22 Ivy Street are John, Jane and Harriet Nallon. I think this is possibly Charles mother, Harriet, and his brother and sister......
John Moran , may be tricky to find, I am afraid, quite a common name in Leeds. Do you have his date of birth ?
JeannieR
-
Hi,
I see John Moran was born in 1903 to Edward and Nellie. He might have gone to America.
Thank you for finding Nellie, his sister, and her husband John James Dixon. John James dies in 1942 living at Firbank Halton. Is that near Gledhow Terrace?
I can't find Nellie's grave. Maybe she remarried. Or maybe went to America.
I just found another relative, Catherine Byron who married John Walls and she died in 1928. But I can't find her or her husband on a 1891 or 1901 census. But I did received today a marriage entry in the St. Anne's Church for my GGgrandparent's. It states who their parents were and if they were living. I am trying to located Martin Byron marrying a Catherine McGorman or McGowan before 1854. They have two children Martin and Catherine. Martin is my direct. his wife had died before (I am assuming) he came to Leeds in 1848ish....with his 3 daughters. He then remarries and has the two children. If I can locate when Martin Byron married, maybe I can get the Church entry to tell me where he came from.
So much researching.
Thank you fo all your help. I have a lot to do before my trip to Leeds in June.

Hi Mary....
Another case of mistranscription I think ...
Martin BARRAN to Kitty McGowan at St Peter's, Leeds. June qtr 1851 / vol 23 page 415
Catherine Byron married John Walls 1887 at the Registered Building, Wetherby . John died in 1889 age 44 at Leeds....
I cannot find Catherine on the 1891 census, but here she is in 1901
Huby Lane, Weeton ......
Kate Walls / widow / age 43 / Charwoman / born Leeds
Ellen Walls / daughter / age 12 / born Huby, Weeton
Huby is almost the next village to me !! About 5 minutes drive. This is where Catherine's parents lived too......
Ellen Walls married 1906 / Dec qtr / Leeds / vol 9b page 963 / groom James Danby.
They appear to have had only one child, Winifred, in 1909.
In 1937, they were living at 3 Barnet Place Wortley
Best wishes

Thank you!!!!!!
I now have another surname to look for.
Wonderful, wonderful stuff.
You are amazing.

Mary....
My pleasure....
Winifred Danby , married in 1933. Her husband was Harry Sumpner, born 1905. I can't see, that they had any children I am afraid. In 1937, they were living near Winifred's parents, Ellen and James, at 14, Barnet Street, Wortley.
There is some body, on Ancestry, with Harry Sumpner on their tree.

You truly are amazing. I have some work to do tonight researching Sumpner.

Where would the best place to find the parish registers for St. Peter's for a marriage in 1851?
I have ordered the civil but would love to see the church record.
Any suggestions?
Mary

Good Morning Mary.
I am pretty certain, that the Parish Records for St Peter's Church in Leeds, are held at The Leeds Reference Library, details of which I gave you in a earlier post. They are open 7 days a week.
Email address: local.studies@leeds.gov.uk if you would like to check in advance
If not there, then Yorkshire Archaelogical Society, Family History Section do have them. You would need to make a appointment though, as they have limited opening hours, being run by volunteers
www.yorkshireroots.org.uk
Claremont
23 Clarendon Road
Leeds
LS2 9NZ
This is only a short distance from the library. In my youth, I could walk there easily, but now would take a taxi. There is a free bus available also, from Leeds City Bus station. I am afraid I do not know any details, as I no longer live in Leeds.
St Peter's Church, is Leeds Parish Church, and is worth a visit.
Best Regards

As has been said, look at the record in Leeds library staff very helpful.

My fathers family are Byron from Ballina, Co. Mayo
They have settled in Leeds over the last century. Regrettably, there are now more Byron's here than in Ireland. Most of my fathers generation, were married in St.Annes, as the Woodhouse area (St.Annes parish) was the only area in which Irish were able to settle at the turn of the last century. Over time, the Irish spread to the York Road area (Mount St. Mary's)
I have never heard the names of the people you are looking for mentioned though

Sorry I didn't respond earlier. I just moved and wasn't near a computer for some time.
Who are your Byrons? They must be from the same family. I know my Bridget had three sisters. Could you share your Byron info with me?
When I went to England, I visited with the person that held the St. Anne records. I found a certificate that stated the Byrons were from Balina.
