Title: Darwen - Learning Disability Home 1941?
Post by: northern_rose on Saturday 12 March 11 18:35 GMT (UK)
I believe it is possible that my father's aunt may have died aged 17 in Darwen in 1941 - possibly in an institution for people with Learning Disabilities (maybe Downs?)

Does anyone know of such an institution that would have accepted people from quite some distance away (e.g. Barrow-in-Furness)?

Many thanks

Did you receive a reply?
How do you know the death took place in Darwen?

You could always get the death certificate for her to see more information.

Where was she on the 1939 register.

Hi

If you have found the death on the GRO Index of Darwen and the Registration District is gen as DARWEN it is important the you consider the the RD covered more than the town of Darwen. I would suggest that you try www.lancashirebmd.org.uk as it will give you the sub-district in which the death took place. You may find it could Mellor, Billington rather than Darwen

Thank you for reviving this thread and giving me the nudge I needed to look Winifred up again.

In 1939 she was at her family home in Barrow in Furness and is listed as incapacitated.

I hadn't ordered her death certificate (but have now). I hadn't thought to look up the registration on Lanc BMD - that shows her death in Billington. Would I be correct in presuming she could therefore have been at Calderstones?

In a strange coincidence I watched a YouTube video a week or two back about Calderstones Cemetery and found it fascinating! My lady was buried back at Barrow though.

Personally I wouldn't presume anything until you receive the death certificate and can see what information is on it.  It will have place and cause of death plus who the informant of the death was.

Agree I would never presume until the certificate arrives (it's ordered).

I was really asking if anyone knows which district Calderstones deaths were recorded in?

Was the address Whalley?  If so that seems to be under Clitheroe registration district.

Just to conclude Winfred's story and the thread - her death certificate arrived today and she died at Brockhall rather than Calderstones but a similar institution.

Just adding another twist to this - I have now found her brother in Calderstones in 1939! He died there in 1942 and is buried in the Hospital Cemetery.
