Hi karen003
I know it's not helping find your immigration details
but I couldn't help noticing that Matilda gave 3 of her boys
the middle name of WELLS and lists Elijah as the father ::)
Could be an interesting story there ;)
Did Matilda and Henry Wells marry........and if so where? sorry missed that

Not sure if this one might be a little too old.
Matilda was still having children in 1876 = 58 years old
Not impossible but :-\

This Matilda was born in 1841 & married Elijah Manton in 1856/57 as they had 2 children but must have divorced as she had her 3rd with Henry Wells in abt 1867 plus many more...They married 1888 moved to Sydney abt 1880 with her Manton children as well...I just cant find anything about them arriving in Australia which is strange
-
Karen,
Now that is really odd as there are 7 children recorded on the
Victorian births between 1859-1876
which list father as Elijah Manton and mother as Matilda Herbert
very strange indeed :o

Now im totally confused...lol...Wonder why they have Wells as the middle name as we are ancestors of George so dont know now if we are actually Manton & not Wells... Im sure from Philip onwards she had them with Henry Wells, as he is listed as father on death certs, but was maybe still married to Manton so listed Manton as father??

Oh dear...........confusing indeed!
Perhaps good old Elijah did a runner to WA and
Matilda stayed in Victoria and made babies with Mr Wells ;D
According to what Gerry found Elijah was still in Victoria in 1875

Its interesting that he was staying at a hotel as family folklore suggests Mr Wells was a publican!!!...More than pouring beers i gather...Thanks for the help...
I found a Mr Wells on the ship Gothenburg in Sept 1863 to Melb. Is there any way of finding out his name & age?
-
It's also interesting to see that when Matilda married Henry Wells
in Victoria in 1880 - she used the name Matilda HERBERT ( not her married name of Manton)
Wonder what details would be on this marriage certificate -
widow? unmarried? divorced?
Raylen
Sorry to have side tracked from your immigration question :D
-
If this is your Henry
Henry P Wells
Birth: abt 1835 - Bramshott, Hampshire, England
he is still in England on the 1861 census. So that helps to narrow
down arrival dates.
Can't see any details for the Mr Wells you mentioned on the Gothenburg

Hi Karen
I'm descended from Elijah & Matilda Manton.
Just to add to the mystery, their first son Elijah Herbert Manton is buried in the Manton family grave in Leceistershire. They must have come to Australia twice but I haven't found them on the shipping lists.
Also, Elijah was arrested for desertion in Forbes NSW in the early 1860's.

Hi Karen, I have just joined RootsChat and was thriled to find this discussion on Matilda Herbert, Henry Wells & Elijah Manton. All this info is very helpful. My husband is also a descendant of George so we may have a family connection. Are you a member of Ancestry as I would like to make contact with you in an appropriate way? If not what is the best way for Rootschat members to contact offline or is that not recommended? Thanks again for all your help

Hi Valerie,
Welcome to RootsChat. :D
There is a personal message system here. All you need to do is make 3 posts - 1 down, 2 to go (they don't have to be significant) and then you can "PM" anyone. You just click on the scroll under their information on the left hand side. A new screen will open, very similar to when you send email.
