Title: Wason Family
Post by: Wasonsearch on Friday 11 March 11 18:04 GMT (UK)
Hi all.
I am a newbie here. Trying to trace back on the Wason family line, but am struggling to get info on the family before James Paterson Wason, born 22 Dec 1839 Girvan, married on 17 Sep 1860 to Jane Mc Donald, and died on 21 Aug 1901 in Ballantrae.
His father was Henry Wason, born in Dailly either in 1801 or 1811, married on 28 April 1829 to Marion Paterson, and died on 22 Feb 1855 in Girvan.
I'm looking for details on any siblings of Henry Wason as well as details (along the male line i.e. the Wason surname) of his parents, grandparents, etc as well as siblings.

I'm in South Africa so I cannot get to any archives, churches etc to view records.

Any guidance or assistance, or direction to an existing thread etc. will be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

Have you viewed the death cert of Henry Wason in 1855 - you can do this on line on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk, it is pay to view but costs are reasonable. 1855 was the first year of official registration and for that first year only, the BMD certs ran over two pages of the register, with a wealth of additonal info. Amongst other info, it should include the names of Henry's parents to let you work back with confidence.

This is an example of an 1855 death cert www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/content/images/famousscots/sample1855death.tif

An extremely long shot I'm afraid but do you have any info on a Robert Wason, occupation Fireman who sailed from Glasgow in 1911 bound for Philadelphia. He was accompanying a Sarah McAlonan from Renfrew and they were going to stay with her brother Samuel. The McAlonans had moved to Renfrew from the Dalry area of Ayrshire so possibly a Wason/Ayrshire connection.
Many thanks.

Hi Monica.

Thanks for the welcome.

Yes, I have been to the Hunterboa site which has been of great help from Henry Wason  downwards, to more modern times. This has provided me with the bulk of the info that I already have.
It is the older info that is proving difficult.
I will certainly give the BMD register option a try and perhaps try and make contact with Hunterboa too.

Hi Baird.

Regrettably, I have not come across a Robert Wason in any of my research thusfar.

Regards

Ivan.

Hi WasonSearch

Hugh McCREADY         married    Janet WASON (c. 12.02.1843)
b. 02.02.1842, Ballantrae SCOTLAND         b. 12.01.1843, Girvan Ayr SCOTLAND
d. 04.02.1910, "Palmyra" Mildura Vic. (Ref.2744)      d. 29.11.1890, Palmyra near Mackay QLD
Married:  25.1.1867, United Presbyterian Church, Fortitude Valley Brisbane QLD
(Both buried on Palmyra Estate, near Walkerston Qld)

Janet was the daughter of Henry WASON [Coal Carter] and Marion PATERSON who were married 28.04.1829 Dailly, Ayr, Scotland. The 1851 Census, lists the family living at 96 Old Street, Girvan: Henry aged 40 coal carter, Marion aged 39, James aged 11 scholar, Jennet (Janet) aged 8, Peter aged 6 scholar, and Hugh (12 months).

Janet left Glasgow abroad the "Samarang" on 24.07.1865, occupation listed as domestic servant, arrived Moreton Bay, Brisbane on 13.11.1865, aged 23 years and died at age 49 years of breast cancer on 29th November 1890 at Palmyra Mackay.

Although I cannot claim this research as my own, I have no reason to doubt its accuracy.

Hi Q98.

Many thanks for the info.
I have already been in contact with Ann Turnbull who has posted a fair bit of the info that is already out there, and is probably the source of your info too. Yes, her infomation is reliable. Hunter Boa is the only other person I can find who has done research on this line of the Wasons.

Is there anyone else out there with info not posted by Ann or Hunter?

Ivan

Hi Ivan

[His father was Henry Wason, born in Dailly either in 1801 or 1811, married on 28 April 1829 to Marion Paterson, and died on 22 Feb 1855 in Girvan.]

Just picked up this thread. Don't know if this is helpful but I have a Helen Wason born Dailly  1816, father John Wason, born circa 1775 in Dailly. Possibly your Henry's brother.

Hi Panrider.

Thanks for the info.

The John Wason you mention may be an uncle of my Henry.
The father of my Henry (born 1801 - I think the 1811 dob is from the census records and most likely incorrect), was also Henry.
The c1775 dob of John Wason could indicate that John and Henry snr may have been siblings.

I'll try follow up on this. Any info is most welcome.

Hi Ivan

Wasan data seems very limited but then Dailly records can be.  John Wason's marriage to Jane Lambie (Lamie) 23/12/1802 Dailly, is listed as John Watson.

Another daughter Janet Wason born c 21/04/1811; Helen Wason (sic) 29/03/1816

There are big gaps but I can't see any other children.
