Has anyone got information (ascendants etc) on Jane Barrow b 1841 Coal Aston?

sorry about the delay!

She was married to George Hardcastle who was born 1838 Handsworth Woodhouse, Sheffield and was in the 1871 and 1881 censuss (as his wife)

There are a few George Hardcastle's who married a Jane in the early 1860's

This appears to be the one you have found:

June qtr 1863
York district    Vol 9d, Page 80
Hardcastle, George
Barrow, Jane

But this would appear to be more likely?

March qtr 1863
Sheffield district    vol 9c, page 401
Hardcastle, George
- and on the same page -
Redfearn, Jane

Do you have the marriage certificate?
Or can you tell us how you know you have the right Jane?


I did a search on Jane, born 1841, in Coal Aston on the 1861 census, and only 1 popped up:

110 London Road, Eccleshall Bierlow, Sheffield

Whitworth, William  Head  M  55  Brewer  b Milton, Wiltshire
Whitworth, Ann  Wife  F  57  b Kingston, Surrey
Redgen, Jane  Servant  F  20  Domestic Servant  b Coal Aston, Derbyshire

but the original form looks like Redfern

Hi, In 1881 living with husband George a stone mason and the children were Wilfred Hardcastle 15, Malinder Hardcastle 10, James Hardcastle 7, Elizabeth Hardcastle 5
Also in the house was Samuel Robinson a lodger.

In 1891 she was living in Dronefield and still married to George a Stone Mason, with daughter elizabeth Ann aged 14.


In 1901 living in Fanshaw Street Dronefield with George and son James 26 and daughter Elizabeth 24.

It appears Jane died in the Chesterfield area in October, 1908

Found their marriage reference on freeBMD as June qtr 1863 York Vol 9d p80

Getting the certificate will at least tell you who the father is.

I think I'd go with KGarrads findings and it's Jane Redfearn, as the Jane Barrow in the Ripon area was not born at Coal Aston.

George HARDCASTLE was born 28 Sep 1838 and baptised 28 Oct 1838 at St Marys' Handsworth.

Parents Joseph HARDCASTLE (Mason) and Mary MALLINDER.

Can't help with Jane but as already stated she is more likely to be Jane REDFERN and married in Sheffield.
