Hello,
A George Swarbrick who lived in Kirkham, Lancashire. If such a record exists, which section of the Returns of Papists can I find it in? Is there a series number? Many thanks in advance.

Welcome to Rootschat Sam,
I'm afraid I dont know anythng about the Return of the Papists but just wondered how you knew the date for George?
I did find a George Swarbrick christened at St Michael on the Wyre
which is a few miles down the river Wyre from Kirkham.
The only thing is the year is just a few years out.
George Swarbrick c 14th March 1762 at St Michael on the Wyre
his father was also called George Swarbrick.
I am sure someone will come on and will know about the Return of the Papists.
Sounds like a film title to me lol.
Hope you find your George
regards

Hi SandyMC,
I've found that record for George Swarbrick from St. Michael's on Wyre. I thought that I might have been onto something. However, after some digging in Lancs record office it turned out not to be an ancestor!
I've been in touch with someone on ancestry.co.uk who suggests that a George Swarbrick of Kirkham, Lancs was 14 in the 1767 Returns of Papists.
I know from parish records that George Swarbrick and Mary Kitchen (Swarbrick) were the parents of John Swarbrick (1783-1826). It's just a question of finding the right George!
There's a copy of the Returns of Papists in Birmingham Central Library so I plan to visit. It would be helpful to get an index/series number to narrow my search to Lancashire.
Cheers,
Sam

Hi jds1949,
Yes I think that's it: amazing! I'm pretty certain that George is my 6th great grandfather. I believe that he married twice (to two Mary's) and had 18 children overall. I am also led to believe that William (George's father) was born in Little Plumpton. That would fit with the info you've supplied. Also, that William married Ann[e?] Hodgson in 1731 Cockerham, Lancs. Please let me know if any of this correlates with your records! Cheers.

Hi Sam, I found the same reference as jds 1949 to Little Plumpton. Interestingly the whole area seems to be part of the deanery of Amunderness. I also found other Swarsbreck in the area.
Weeton and Prese: John 63, yeoman; Mary 52 wife, James 26, Ann, 23, Frances 18 also Richard 60 a day labourer.
Greenall and Thistleton; Ann wife of George (who I guess was not a papist) 50
Mary 14, Catherine 12, Ellen, 9, Robert 5
Return of Papists 1767, Diocese of Chester 1767
