Title: Bargers/ Masters of vessels

A number of my family were bargers in the Hull or Knottingley area. On census forms they are down as being masters of vessels or bargers. I cannnot find out more about them. Any suggestions about where to look? Dates from 1856 for example Joseph Coward Gawthorpe 1856. Thanks for any help
