Title: Parish of Ormskirk Lancs
Post by: jimbow on Wednesday 09 March 11 19:26 GMT (UK)
Hi all, have just found this wonderful website. I am researching my surname "Wilberforce" but I am now stuck. I am as far back as my Gt Gt Grandfather Mark Wilberforce, born in 1798 in Ormskirk. And it is info from Ormskirk that I can't find. He came to Liverpool I assume quite young as he married a Betty Richardson at St Annes Richmond Liverpool in 1811, and from then on all his descendants were born and lived in Liverpool. Any info gratefully appreciated.

Hi and welcome to Rootschat

Did Mark die in 1849?

Do you already have these christenings of his children

John 22.11.1812 - Wavertree
Mary 30.1.1814   - Wavertree
Frances Jane 1.10.1820 - Childwall
Peter 13.7.1823  - Wavertree

In 1841 he is living alone in Wavertree Village indexed as Willerforce.  Age 45 and occupation bricklayer he is shown as not born in county (ie) Lancashire

Where did you get the info from that he was born in Ormskirk

Welcome to Rootschat Jimbow  :D :D

Lancashire Online Parish Clerk website has just uploaded the Kirkham church baptisms for 1776-1800
http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/

follow the 'what's new' link, scroll down to Kirkham.
Unfortunately Mark Wilberforce is not listed between 1798-1800, but they haven't done the post-1800 baptisms yet, so he may have been baptised later, or of course at a completely different church. Or a different town if the census Carole found is the right one.

sorry will amend, have put Kirkham instead of Ormskirk  ::) ::)
still, no Wilberforces earlier than 1820 or so in the whole of Lancs OPC search

http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/
Just checking - is the birth date of 1798 definitely right there? He was only 13 when he married?

 :) Barbara

1841 shows him as 45 so age between 45-49 allowing for rounding down.  Birthyear 1792-1796

Marriage 1811 so would expect birthyear to be 1792/94

From the IGI

http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=igi/search_IGI.asp&clear_form=true

MARK WILBERFORCE   Christening:  09 JUN 1789   North Newbald, Yorkshire,    Father:  JOHN WILBERFORCE     Mother:  FRANCES

1841 shows Mark not born in county

Youngest daughter was called Frances
First son was called John

Birthyear sits better with an 1811 marriage

It would be interesting to know how old both Betty & Mark were when they died

there is also a William Wilberforce bap 1796 at north Newbold, parents John and Frances.
Possible fit for the William Wilberforce in Wavertree in 1841, married to Lydia. Mark's brother perhaps?
HO107/511/9/37

Wilberforce not a common Lancashire name at all

Regarding the peter wilberforce with the criminal records.

Preston Chronicle (Preston, England), Saturday, August 12, 1843; Issue 1615.

Peter Wilberforce, 21, charged with feloniously receiving, at Lancaster, two pieces of print, and a silk handkerchief, the property of Grace Lupton.

The Lancaster Gazette and General Advertiser, for Lancashire, Westmorland, &c. (Lancaster, England), Saturday, February 08, 1845; Issue 2234. 19th Century British Library Newspapers: Part II.

FELONY - On Saturday evening last, about 8 o'clock, Policeman Fryers, of the borough police, whilst on his beat in Church-street, observed two men come out of New-street, and, having reason to suspect them, he watched their course, and found them in a passage on Castle Hill. he observed that one of them had something bulky under his coat, and demanded a sight of it. This was refused, &  on proceeding to look for himself, he found concealed a valuable plaid scarf. He took the men into custody, and immediately Superintendent Wright sent messengers round to ascertain if any place had been robbed, and it was found, that about a quarter of an hour before the scarf had been taken from the shop of Mr Mo Raith, draper, New-street. The prisoners whose names are John Moore, of London, and Peter Wilberforce of Liverpool, were on Monday taken before the mayor, an committed to the assizes for trial.

The Lancaster Gazette and General Advertiser, for Lancashire, Westmorland, &c. (Lancaster, England), Saturday, October 24, 1846; Issue 2323. 19th Century British Library Newspapers: Part II.

--The full article is too long to type, but has a few points of interests such as a quote from him. He was charged with stealing two hats and two caps from a shop in Lancaster - he pleaded not guilty - was found guilty by a jury and sentenced to ten years transportation given it was his third conviction for a felony.

Hi All, just a rectification to my first post, A slip of the finger meant I put in the wrong birth date, it should read 1789.  :-[
The Ormskirk part, I have seen it somewhere, but I can't remember were, I am frantically searching all of my paperwork now to see where I got it from.

Hi Jimbow

But where did his birthplace of Ormskirk come from?

I can't remember where I got Ormskirk from, but I must have seen it somewhere, I even have the exact date of birth, which is the 5th April 1789. The trouble is I haven't been doing any research for a while, and I have just started to have a look round again. I have his death cert which says he was 60 when he died in 1849. I have his family as:
John born 1812
Mary born 1814
Christopher born 1816
Charles born 1817 (my Gt Grandfather) He had been misinterpreted as Welberface in records.
Frances Jane born 1820
Peter born 1823
His wife Betty died circa 1837

Further to CaroleW's reply about Peter Wilberforce, and being transported. On further investigation, I found that Peter never came back to this country after his ten years in Australia. He eventually died in 1883 in Tasmania aged 60. Which now makes me wonder, do I have relatives in Australia?
Reading through some transcripts, he seems to have been more harshly treated than some others who had also commited larceny.

Just found this post having started to look into my grandfather's first marriage.

Grandfather was John Dobson and he married Margaret Wilberforce on 26 October 1889 at Holy Trinity Liverpool

Margaret was the daughter of Charles Wilberforce and his wife Jane Morris. Charles was born 18 Dec 1817 and christened on 13 jan 1818 the son of Mark and Betty at Childwall. I have their marriage somewhere but can't lay my hands on it at the moment. Margaret was born 16 November 1863 and christened 14 Dec 1863. John and Margaret went on to have 2 children John and Sydney. Both died young and Margaret died in 1895.

I have more dates for the children and Margaret if you want them and some addresses.

Gibel

John married again in 1901 to Elizabeth Jones.

Hi Gibel, thanks for the response to my post. I would be very grateful for whatever info you can furnish me about the Wilberforce side of your family. I have a copy of Mark Wilberforce's death cert if you would like a copy. He died in 1849, and I think  Betty died circa 1837. If you think that I may be able to help you with my side of the family let me know.

Ringrose

Thanks for your info Ringrose, I did know about Lancs OPC, and it has been updated since I was last on, which was many many months ago. The Ormskirk thing turned out to be a misnomer on my part, which was pointed out to me by the lovely people of this site. With their help I managed to trace back to a village in North Yorkshire called North Newbald, with possible connections in Wilberfoss. Thanks again.
