Ellen Stagg   Daug 21 Single                   Laundry                                          London
Minnie Stagg Daug  5                                                                                     London
J E Ellis          brother in law 63 widower Gardner                                          Middlesex

i Need to find him on earlier census to help me understand my family tree better. i am desperately looking for any ideas and answers.

Hi & welcome to RootsChat

There is a birth registration for

Minnie May Stagg  1906  Apr-May-Jun Wandsworth  Vol 1d  Page 741

It might be worth investing in the birth certificate as this should show her parents names in full.

It looks as though this was a second marriage for one of the parents, about 1899

Linda

on my nans birth certificate the name of her father is william george stagg deceased,  in fact he died in 1893 and she was born in 1905.

Hmmm, look like a tricky bunch!  What do you think about this lot on the 1891 census at Corporation Street, Islington at  RG12; Piece: 162; Folio 141; Page 25

There's a daughter called Mary A born in Deptford, an unspecified 'relation' called William G Stagg and a couple of grandaughter's - could this be Hannah Stagg's birth?

Births Dec 1883
Bligh  Maud Hannah     Pancras  1b 99

Edit:  Yes, that's them - in 1881 Charles and Hannah Bligh are living next door to John and Eliza Ellis with Charles Bligh junior shown as John Ellis's brother in law.  So I think John Ellis was actually Mary Ann Stagg's brother in law, not her brother.

Hi
Welcome to Rootschat :D

Hmm mysterious... I wonder if Mary Ann Stagg (presumably nee Ellis) set up home with William's brother S Stagg? Who may or may not have been your Nan's father.

Jan ;)

Figment of Mary Ann's imagination more like - did S Stagg actually sign the 1911 census form?  Did Mary Ann Bligh actually marry William Stagg?  Given that John Ellis isn't her brother at all but he's still living with the family I'd be more inclined to suspect him - when did his wife, Eliza, die?

Mary ann Bligh sister married an ellis

Thanks for that.

So do you have her marriage to William George? If of course she married him.

Jan ;)

Interesting thoughts there ermy - I was just wondering if S Stagg existed but if he didn't why not just call him William George as she did on the birth certificate 12 years after his death? ???

This is very weird..

Baptisms Islington St Lukes West Holloway

Born 22 Sep 1883 baptised  5th Nov 1890 Hannah Maud Bligh parents Charles and Mary Ann 2 Corporation St Gardener

Born 24 June 1890 baptised 5th Nov Emily Elizabeth Stagg parents William George and mary Ann 2 Corporation St Groom

So is Hannah Stagg in 1901 actually Mary Ann's sister rather than daughter? And is Emily the Ellen in 1901? And if Mary Ann is saying she is married in 1890 why is she unmarried in 1891??

Jan ;)

Mmmm, good question Jan.  What's with the 12 years married bit tho', that's surely a fib as she's shown as widowed in 1901 (also a fib, probably ::) )  She's unmarried in the 1891 census too, apparently, William dies in 1893 and I can't see a likely marriage for them.  I think she's just given her father's name for Maud Hannah's baptism for the sake of 'respectability' so obviously has no qualms about fibbing to officials of all kinds  ;D  Maud definitely shown as grandaughter to Charles in the 1891 census.

Well, well, William risen from the grave a second time by the look of it  ;D

baron, do you have the actual death certificate for William Stagg, take it it is this one you were referring to?

Deaths Mar 1893
Stagg  William George  29  Islington  1b 240

Wonder if this is Elizabeth's death?
Deaths Mar 1910
ELLIS  Elizabeth  57  Wandsworth  1d 341

It seems she and John didn't have any children of their own ...

the 1911 census was signed by S Stagg.
No Proof Mary Married William George Stagg, but he appears as the deceased father on Ellen stagg (daug) on her marriage certificate in 1911.

william George Stagg also appears as father on minnie may stagg birth certificate 1906

As anyone found any records of WG Stagg's daughters

Only these two which I posted back on page 1 - as Hannah Maud was registered and baptised Bligh she may not have been William's

Baptisms Islington St Lukes West Holloway

Born 22 Sep 1883 baptised  5th Nov 1890 Hannah Maud Bligh parents Charles and Mary Ann 2 Corporation St Gardener

Born 24 June 1890 baptised 5th Nov Emily Elizabeth Stagg parents William George and mary Ann 2 Corporation St Groom

The only other baptism I can see with parents William George a groom and Mary Ann is the Frederick who died and for whom there is also a St Pancras Workhouse entry where only the mother's name is given.
