Hi All :)
There is also a shipping entry for a Francis S Banner returning to the UK in 1927, occupation is showing as a naval officer. He was 38, so born c. 1889 as you have.
Some family trees on Ancestry have his death in 1953 in Rosyth, Fife, as you have found Ev.
Monica
Added: Details for his death on line show as: Queensferry Road, Rosyth (accident), usual address 50 Park Road, Rosyth, Engineer Commander Royal Navy(Retired), Divorced, Informant E Banner (sister)

OK, so that is Francis and Austin, Ev ;D
Chrissie is showing on some family trees as having died in Bradford Yorks. c. 1979. Don't think this info is correct - there is a death for a Christina M Banner b. 1908 who died in 1978 in Edinburgh. Her phone listing in 1955 in Edinburgh showed her as unmarried.
Dave, was Chrissie also a performer? There are photos of her on one family tree.

Just a guess, from the death searches showing on SP, you get the feeling that most of the family stayed in the Edinburgh area. There are as possibilities:
A death showing in 1969 for a Thomasina P Banner, other surname INGLIS, who died in Edinburgh in 1969, aged 69 (born c. 1900).
A further death in 1972 for a William Francis Banner, who died in Edinburgh aged 80 (born c. 1892 - a couple of years light of that possible birth year of 1888).
We are also missing the children born between 1901-11. The release of the Scottish 1911 census on 5 April will help you with this. We know that a sister E. Banner reported brother Francis' death in 1953.

only elizabeth banner born between 1901 and 1911 midlothian(1907) , Monica
there is also a divorce for william F banner / elizabeth FP hislop in 1956

ps looks like that banner/hislop marriage was 1940 midlothian so maybe a bit
late - could be the next generation :-\

Ev and Monica,
Thanks ever so much. You are certainly quick off the mark North of the Border.
I suspect that you have seen my family tree on ancestry - 'Michael of Manningham'
Christina or Chrissie as she was known, was indeed a vaudeville actress. When her brother Alfred died she stayed on at his house in Bradford, she might have returned to Edinburgh just before her death.
Alf's wife Doris (Jennie) was the sister of my Grandparents who lived next door but one.
I think Alf was taken back to Edinburgh for the funeral and someone in my family mentioned Berwick. I made a fatal assumption that it was Berwick-on-Tweed and it took a chance remark, much later, to put me back on the right track.
It is a bit difficult to get information for Scotland down here - no Free BMD information.

Tried scotlandspeople , registered and got the index but I was unable to view anything other than the number of hits ?
Thanks anyway. I'll leave this thread open for a while to see if there are any more replies

Dave ,
you have to buy credits even to view the index
by using all the various search parameters , and as long as it's not a common
surname , you can usually narrow it down to 1 hit
even viewing the index would not prove it is the person you are after
you would have to view the certificate to get parents names for example to
find if you have the right person
there are limits to what you can view online 100 years for births , 75 years for
marriage , 50 years for deaths
any certificates that fall into those periods would have to be ordered

Hi Dave, would this be the family descended from Robert Banner and Margaret Anderson, marriage banns 11/14/1806,St. Cuthbert's Parish, Margaret's father John Anderson. labourer, Water of Leith? My husband's grandfather William was this couple's son. Think there was a Francis, too.

Hi musikerin
The ancestors of Alfred 1891 and Christina 1908 are not my relations so other than some preliminary research to tie the family together, I have not looked much at them. The earliest I have found are Francis 1809 married to Agnes Henness Scott (perhaps the 'Scott' element came from her?) The marriage was 1829 St. Cuthberts Parish. It is quite possible that Francis had a brother William - your husband's ancestor. Interestingly their son Francis Scott Banner 1939 married a Jane Anderson 7 Mar 1856 in Edinburgh.
regards
Dave

I believe John is the brother of my great grandfather William Banner, son of Robert Banner and Margaret Anderson of Edinburgh. William emigrated to Australia where he married Mary Fitzgerald who had emigrated from County Clare Ireland. One of my relatives has traced the Anderson family back to the 16thC. but I can go no further back than Robert Banner on that side of the family. I would like to know who were his parents and where he was born.
