Title: Photos to be dated
Post by: Chester-Rod on Monday 07 March 11 13:43 GMT (UK)
I Have 2 photos that I am trying to identify.  And they could be any of the following:

Hannah Jones born 1825 died between 1891 & 1901
Hannah Davies born 1855 died 1922
Herietta Davies born 1882 died after 1948

The photos are cabinet cards with plain dark green backs and rounded corners.

Can anyone help?

I do not know much about dating photo's but W G Helsby operated his business from 24 Vales St., Denbigh from 1876 to 1883.

You are correct, W G Helsby senior died in 1891.  However, I believe his son W G Helsby Junior continued the business until his death in 1925.  I also understand that cabinet cards began to die out around 1900 although some were still being used after that date where stock allowed.

First one right around 1890, and not much leeway due to the type of sleeve...it didn't come out until 1889 and was replaced by a completely different style in 1893. So this is likely Hannah Davies.

The second one is I think a reprint made about the same time. It shows a lady wearing late 1860s, maybe 1870s style clothing but very plain if it's 1870s. Also a late 1860s type of pose. But the backing is 1890s, so it has to be a reprint. Hannah Jones then, and likely a memorial photo.

Cheers,
China

disagree slightly with China,I think late 1870's for the second one. This neckline wasn't seen in 1860's - early 70's but would still have to be Hannah Jones so academic really.

Pretty plain and dull for 70s Jim, don't you think?

Rod was Hannah a Quaker or some other "plain" denomination?

Not sure what religious denomination Hannah Jones was.  She married a coal miner (Ismael Jones) in 1846 in the Chapel of Treddyn in Mold.  If the photo was 1870 this would put her age at 45, if 1875 then 50.

I think 1890 for Photo 1 would tie in with Hannah Davies as I think she looks around 35. Do you agree?

Treddyn or Treuddyn chapel seems to be Wesleyan Methodist. Did you google it? There's even a painting.

35 looks about right to me.

Assuming Photo 2 is Hannah Jone, if it was 1870 she would be 45, if 1875 she would be 50, if 1880 she would be 55.  What age do you think she was when the picture was taken?
