I am seeking any information regarding a Thomas Whittow who was born ~ 1841. His father was a James Whittow whose occupation on Thomas' marriage certificate is given as "farmer".
Thomas Whittow, a tailor, married Martha Gullen, who was born in 1842 in St Ishmaels, Nr Milford(haven). The marriage took place in Liverpool on 7th Nov.1864. However since his wife came from Pembrokeshire and the name Whittow seems most common there, I feel confident Thomas too was born in Pembrokeshire; an opinion passed down through the generations.
Thomas Whittow died in Liverpool on 30th March1870 (with a stated age of 28 years). Consequently he is not included in the 1871 England Census which may have given a clue to his precise DOB and location.
I am hoping someone will find an entry for Thomas Whittow or his father James on a Pembrokeshire 1851 or 1861 census, or local Church records. Any help will be much appreciated. Cheers Peter

I'm afraid I've come to your request rather late, so you may well have answered the questions you pose.
The following may just assist your requirements;
There are no baptism entry for Martha Gullen, however I do note the baptism entry for Martha Gullum at St Ishmael's in 1835.
As to Thomas Whittow, the only gentleman that appears to come near to your requirements is Thomas George Whittow baptised at Steynton in 1843.
Something of a shot in the dark, a William Whittow a widow Farmer of St Ishmaels married Phillis Wathan at Haverfordwest St Thomas 24 Feb 1831.

Hi, Orielbenfro
Many thanks for your reply, it is most useful. Martha's surname spelling does seem to vary; Gullum, Gullen, Gwillam are all variants. I guess without widespread literacy, phonetic spelling was commonly used.
I'll follow up your leads. Cheers. Peter

Hello Again Orielbenfro,
I think I'm making some progress on my Thomas Whittow research and I hope you can help me further.
Thomas Whittow did have a middle name of George so your report of a Baptism at Steynton in 1843 seems relevant. Not being familiar with the area is Steynton sometimes spelt as Stainton?
Could you tell me whether the Steynton baptism records would show the parents' names and also where I might view them. (Pembroke Records Office??)
I also wondered whether the William Whittow and Phillis Wathan you mention might be the parents, particularly in view of the Union Workhouse being located in St Thomas.
Thomas, aged 9, is listed in the 1851 Census as a "pauper" living in the Union Workhouse, St Thomas, Haverfordwest and in 1861 as a journeyman Tailor living with a Polish Master Tailor in Steynton. (Tailoring was his trade.)
Any help you can provide would be much appreciated. Regards Peter

Old Birkonian
Steyton Baptism Register
01 Jan 1842 Thomas George to Jane Whittow of Steyton a servant
a quick look at the index’s and I noted Jane had been baptized in 1819 at Steyton
29 Apr 1840 William to Margaret Whittow of Steyton a servant
I was unable to locate a baptism for Margaret in the Pembs Rec Off index's.

I believe James Whittow - a farmer lived at Howelston Farm, Little haven in Pembrokeshire.
His grave is located in St James church, Walwyn's Castle. James had seven children, one named thomas. The records for St James church christenings, marriages etc are held on MF at the Pembrokeshire RO in Haverfordwest. Also stored at haverfordwest library records section is a detailed family tree for James Whittow and his decendants..... Hope this helps!!

Just to give an update original images of Walwyns Castle (as all others of Pembrokeshire) P.R.'s have been available on computer at the R.O., for some time now. Alas not searchable.
