Title: ChCh Quake Again! (Full/Completed)
Post by: Suzy W on Tuesday 22 February 11 01:12 GMT (UK)
Hi again

Hands still shaking but we are o.k.
Cathedral has taken a direct hit, many people are hurt and in shock.
Was able to get the children from school.
Nerves are totally stuffed.

It was horrid.  Had to get children from two schools.  Took neighbours as well to get children, bugger the road code, they sat on each others knees.
People crying and shaking at the schools.  Not a nice scene.
Sounds as if there was a death.  Many hurt.  City is a mess as it was so close.
Hubby is fine, he just got out in time before all the carpet racks fell.  He was under them 2 minutes before it happened.  Now he is home.
I feel like being sick, it is so much worse than the 7.1.
Still getting aftershocks, real rumbles.

Just bottled water a week ago, must of known.
Our house is fine, more cracks, but have not bothered looking.  Books fell out of book case and a few plates fell.
City is a bloody mess.
My neighbours are all fine, been keeping a close eye on the old folk.
Two buses crushed, may have people on them.
It is so worse than September for the city centre.
I broke down and cried when I saw the Cathedral fall.

Was the moon man right?  Still waiting on March.

How much more can Christchurch take ?  According to reports on Twitter, they are pulling bodies out of the two buses that were crushed.  :'( :'( :'( And we are now seeing footage of a person on a roof top, waiting for rescue, unfortunately most of the building has collapsed and many more are believed to still be inside. :'( :'( :'(

A few strong aftershocks.  I would say this is a completely different quake to 4th of Septembers.  Totally in a different area, and close to the top of the ground.

People are missing, fires have occurred in the city.  Make shift emergency triage in and around Christchurch.

We have been lucky, still have full phone use and power.

Worried about a neighbours mother, she was talking to her on the phone when it happened, and she was screaming, then the phone went dead.  No one home at the moment to see if she is alright.

All is quiet at the moment.  Will attempt to start some dinner.

Have been sitting here for hours watching in horror thanks to TV3 live internet feed.  I feel for the presenter who is doing admirably to hold it together herself.

We were trying to think of ways we can help and I thought I'd share some lateral ideas in case they help with that feeling of helplessness one may feel....

I hope you have an OK night Suzy and that the children settle. Really dark now and pretty rough for those without homes to go to at the moment and camping in the park ... and the lack of power etc etc ... did notice early on today that those evacuating were dressed for cooler weather and now the rain has started to make it more miserable. Praying that the rescuers make some progress overnight with those trapped, dreading to hear what the news will be with the death toll expected to rise  :'( ... a dark day... been listening/watching non stop for 8 hours now, bad enough, can't imagine how terrifying and shocking for all those affected down there...

Also just heard the news! My thoughts are with all of those caught up in these dreadful earthquakes.  I grew up in So. Cal so know all about earthquakes and the ever present dread and threat of another one.

I can only echo the very practical instructions that TwiggyTree mentioned.  Can I also add the following:

Know where your water stop-cock is and also the switches that turn on and off your electrical supply to your home and make sure the children (if they are old enough) know where these very important valves are too. It may be that these things need to be switched off asap. Make sure you have enough batteries for your torches (flashlights) and have enough clean water stored by.

My thoughts are with you all

My relatives in Christchurch are OK but they say it is scary

Suzy we never did meet for that coffee  in Christchurch glad you are safe
take care

Having been in New Zealand last year and being in Christchurch a week after the earthquake when there were still trembles I must say I feel so sorry for you all, unfortunately we were not allowed into Christchurch cathedral as it was closed due to falling masonry, we spoke to 2 church officials who gave lots of information, it is  a beautiful place, it is dreadful to see it in ruins now, it is a beautiful country and my heart goes out to everyone affected.

I am sure along with others my prayers are with you

KhP It certainly is hard to comprehend. I can't even recall the last time a tragedy hapened on such a large scale here. Although just as devestating was the "29" This morning it appears more after shocks happened open night and it is believed that 100 people are still under rubble...

Tephra...I agree, I certainly hope the casualities aren't so high....Over night, 3 people were pulled out alive from the CtV building  :)

The students have been fantastic, they have setup a facebook page to register themselves as helpers during this time.

Hi

Thanks for your kind words of support.

A dreadful night with little sleep.  Many aftershocks.  All sleeping in one room, including our little dog.

Can not flush the toilet or use showers.

We are one of the lucky 20% who still have water, phones and power.  Water can not be drunk without boiling first.

Very unclear on the death toll, now they are saying 38 not 65.  People still trapped, and some had to have limbs taken off to get them out of the rubble.

All school children are to stay home.  No one is allowed near the city centre.

Will keep everyone updated

Today is going to be difficult for many....The death toll rises but we can hope that there are resues as well..Many tradesman from around the nation who are already repairing house's, businesses etc, from the last eartquake are in the hot zone, who normally wouldn't have been there.

We are fortunate, our Aussie friends and even the UK are sending search and rescue unit's, we just aren't prepared for this kind of thing.

Thoughts and prayers to all.

lil

The process used for identifying deaths is to confirm identity, there maybe 65 or more deaths but nothing is confirmed until identification is determined. 38 deaths have been confirmed as they have been identified, there are more bodies but unidentified. This is probably a more thorough process rather than speculation, as harsh and cruel as it may sound

Lyttelton is a mess, homes gone, Time Ball Station not likely to be ever fixed, roads with slips, tunnel closed, the list goes on and on.

And our Cathedral I just cried.

Seems like a outer body experience, here we are living 10 minutes from the city centre all safe watching in horror on T.V, and other people are going through hell.

Little sleep last night and still getting aftershocks.  These aftershocks are very different to Septembers,  rolling not shaking, you can see your home move in a circle motion.

Amazing response from international aid. It is really needed.

One building in the city is due to fall, this is one of our highest buildings.  Not like we have very many high buildings as Christchurch is built on swamp land.  But if this goes, so does a heap of other buildings.

Never heard about recurses being killed!

Baby o.k but mother killed, she was still holding baby in her arms.

Lyttelton not so good.  Many old buildings completely unrepairable.  Roads still close off to these areas.

Not as many aftershocks as during the night.  Still having to save water and maybe for a few days yet.  No showers, so we are getting a little smelly.

Post by: MalNZ on Wednesday 23 February 11 02:51 GMT (UK)

Hi All,

You have sent us many kind thoughts and we are all grateful here for your support.

I had written much of this last night but it never got through to the forum. More has been added this morning.  I can only write this as I was only on the margin of the real catastrophe and feel strangely detached, with so few short and quite unrelated memory glimpses of an eventful day.

Picked the wrong day to go into Christchurch. The drive in was normal, a bit wet, and a little colder than a usual summer's day. Did my business in the city in the morning - had to have my laptop serviced and now it is one of those buildings near big collapsed one which still has people trapped within. (at 9.00 am Wednesday).

At 12.51 pm  I was in the depths of the Museum doing some research (never got to the Library).  The quake struck. No real thoughts - scared - running on automatic - realising there was nowhere totally safe to go. The bells and warnings to evacuate are noisy adding to the mind's confusion. The rocking stops and books and equipment are seen on the floor, yet nothing had been  seen to fall.  Two elderly ladies are close by, their faces blank with confusion and fright. A staff member comes by, calm and well trained and guides us to the nearest emergency exit. It is jammed shut and 50-80 museum visitors are crammed in the adjoining corridor, mothers with prams and babies, many tourists and some locals. The memory of some faces is probably permanent for me, but so also is the almost calm quietness of that group - no josling, no screaming, hardly any talk. The staff member gets the door open and we pour out into the spacious gardens adjacent to the Museum. Another quake, but the relief of being outside turns to chin-trembling chatter, and then quickly to concerned enquiry of the person next to you, whoever they may be. A few people are now crying through shock and separation from their companions in the Museum. Masonry and bits of concrete litter the path. The bronze statue of Rolleston, a founder father of Christchurch, outside the Museum fell over backwards and his bronze head is now broken off and buried upside down to jagged break at the neck.  The two elderly ladies who were with me are now talking. Both live alone and their worries are how to let their distant children know that they are safe and well, and how to get home.  I see few locals apart from Museum staff, but many tourists. Their reactions are various. One Museum tourist who had been in the corridor gave me a big hug and laughingly said she was no longer a virgin  - as far as earthquakes go!  Talked with two Welsh visiting geologists who were almost blase about the events having experienced earthquakes somewhere in their travels.  They were in their last hours of visiting NZ.  Their bags are still in the hotel, now closed. I'm afraid that the airport is also closed and they will have no flight back tonight.  Two backpacker hostels are almost collapsed - who knows how many passports, money and tickets are now irretrievable. The central city was being evacuated as everyone there was advised to go the the gardens and Hagley Park, the open central park by and near the Museum where there was safe open ground.  Masses of people are now there. Stories of personal anxieties and damage quickly circulate, especially about the two buses crushed by falling masonry and the several bodies inside.  Those arriving are comforting friend and stranger with whom they walk or stumble. A well organised complete primary school arrives, each class with their teachers holding high a big class-name placard. The children hold hands. On the road the sirens are going all the time, police, ambulances and fire engines all going to the main hospital only a few hundred metres from us.  This was only a microcosm of what was happening in central city only a kilometer away and it was time for me to find my wife.

Hi all - had to break this account to within the word limit

She was to have lunch with a 94 y-o friend. Walked from the Museum down broken roads with water and  mud gushing from the liquefaction of the soil. Passed broken fences, buildings, cars.  His tidy path of pavement stones to the door was a now broken mess thrown up by minature mud volcanoes and gushing water. Forced open his door, thick mud in the entrance hall and found him and my wife and another friend sitting, recovering. The lunch plates and uneaten food mixed with books and magazines on the floor with toppled furniture, pictures, photos and ornaments forming a topping on this surreal cake. Apart from a small cut all three were physically ok. Then walked with our other friend to her apartment not knowing what to expect. She tried hard to hide her anxiety.  More mud and damage to old buildings. Apartments with outer walls missing - all rooms with a view.  A building once a delightful resturant, now a pile of rubble.  Another, an old wooden house gleaming in its new paint and seemly untouched, but its 'for sale' notice distinctly skew and sad in the hedge. The roads are grid-locked now with everybody who could  getting away from central city.  The small cars  carefully skirt the cracks in the road and all have to drive around the rubble.  Her apartment building has big cracks and has sunk down in one corner, pushing the pavement up. More water and mud. Her 4th floor apartment is also a mess, and we decide immediately to leave.  Back to our 94 y-o.  Got him ready to leave. His bedroom door had jammed shut. Managed to get in through the balcony door and get a few clothes and briefcase.  Our car was parked alongside a 2 x 10 metre brick wall. It had collapsed as a unit, complete, but lay away from car.
It is now 2 hours after the main quake and the car radio gave me the first news outside my own experiences of the earthquake. I realised the enormity of the damage to a city that I have known for so many years. How do have a funeral for a church?  What does that rubble tell you of that marriage photograph on that very site.

(midday Wednesday)
Now back at home after a relatively slow drive late yesterday through the loosening gridlock.  Tea and brandy came first.  Now we are warm and comfortable in a house that was scarcely affected by the September and subsequent quakes.  We are close its epicentre west of Christchurch and its severity was something I would not wish on anyone but some television reporters.  I hear that yesterday's quake was hardly felt in our area, The phone and emails are ok and both have been busy all last evening and this morning, giving best wishes as members of this forum have. All are much appreciated.  Already Australian Urban rescue personnel are in the broken buildings and others are soon to arrive from other countries. These are the hard workers backing up your real concern for us. There was an international doctors' conference in progress there in the central city- they soon got into the thick of the triage stations - talk changed to real action for the needy.  It is a pity that some television reporters have misused the term "real" in "reality television". Such TV is now a bore.

But it is not only us. There were many, many tourists and foreign students in town yesterday. Some are almost certainly dead (the as yet unidentified in the numbers hence the disparity in some reports, for relatives have to be informed first). Others have had a bad time and may need help in their own home towns.

Hi guys!  Hang in there Cantabrians families and friends!

Sitting up here in Wellington feeling a tremendous sadness for all involved!  Last night I turned off the TV because I just can't come to terms with it all -then I sat here feeling guilty for that!  Silly thing was when I turned off the TV, I turned on the computer and went straight to Stuff anyway! I guess like everyone else - I just soooo wish that I was able to do something!

All I can do is continue to say "you are in my thoughts and prayers", and give thanks for all the National and International help and love!   Hugs and love to you all!

I can only sincerely say Please God help the families and  friends of those in the Christchurch areas, and  the tireless efforts of the rescue workers and everyone connected with this dreadful thing.

Jeanne

Keep writing your experiences here if you feel able. I agree with your comments about reporters' attitudes so it's great to have first-hand accounts of what is happening.

There is no rhyme nor reason to how things can be detroyed and others spared.

Omega, try not to worry, communication lines in Christchurch are not reliable at the moment and if your cousin has dial up internet, its possible they have no connection. I know its difficult not knowing how people are, text messaging has been our most reliable communication, and its not great at times either.

I'm hopefully thinking that soon maybe they will be able to put out a list of missing people?  I have a friend in Christchurch, but no news of her yet.  Overseas people might like to check out www.stuff.co.nz - keeping pretty well up to date on there, with constant updates. It's NZ National News site. They did have a "Person Finder on there yesterday, but I can't find it today.

Sadly, it's not a pretty sight, but at least you can take it at your own pace!  :(

Hugs to everyone around the world who are suffering the anxiety of all this! And the support I see on here for those in Chch is absolutely fantastic.  Thanks also to the Christchurch people for keeping us updated and sharing their experiences with us.

Hi all

Thanks for your concern, I'm fine but out of the house.

Only got internet back this morning and we made a 6 hr "dash" back to Heathcote to get clothes etc.

Last night we just grabbed bedding in case we had to sleep in the cars.

I'm at a cousins in Rangiora with power, water and a toilet!

It is something I hope I never go through again, windows exploding, everything projectiling at me.

95% of the contents are trashed, 8 windows blown out, but we are all safe!

Cheers

Oh Annie, I hear Heathcote was hit bad.  Even the Mayors parents house was written off!  Hope you are safe in Rangiora?

Still no phones to many, so to those who have not heard anything do not panic.  Even I am waiting on contacting my Aunt who is 86 years old living near Bromley, the phones just are not working.

How sad about CTV.  To see the people who you kind of know are now dead.  Donna the host of the shopping show was always a bundle of smiles and always talked about her children with such pride, she even had a baking show which she was inclined to add those M&M's into her recipes, my thoughts go to her family and to the other family members of CTV.

Also all the Japanese students who were here only a week are all dead apart from one.  Such a shame.  This event is now global including the death of an Australian.

Over 20 bodies are lying under the Cathedral, it is unknown if they are tourists or Christchurch locals.

Even deaths in the suburbs.  One man came across a bike, and thought he should dig down to make sure.  He came across a body.

Sumner is on alert with the risk of more boulders falling.

We are told to bury our waste in the garden.  I have been good and poured used dish water onto the garden and not using too much.

Tomorrow I hope is a better day for recovery and repair.  The feeling around Christchurch is disbelief and shock .

Yes it does help to talk about it, and write about it.
It especially helps to be able to talk to "friends" made on RC.
The constant TV coverage has made it very personal for a lot of people in other countries. It reminds me of Sept 11. I know there were a lot more people died then, but it was the TV coverage and the comeraderie then that is the same now. I guess Brisbane was like this last month and we here in FNQ earlier this month. Being able to talk about it eases the tension we all feel.
I was so glad to have RC friends during the cyclone and I'm sure Christchurchers must feel the same now.
It's so good to have friends.

I'm glad all our RCer friends seem to be safe.  I watched the news and was astounded by the pictures.  I've never been to NZ, so don't know what Christchurch used to be like.  It just looked as though it had been hit by a load of bombs.

MaINZ your report made things seem more real.  The bit that made me weep a little was the story about the primary school children being led by their teachers.  They must have practised for hours after the previous earthquake, never dreaming that they would have to do it.

Good Morning

Just to say we had a good sleep last night, only woke to two aftershocks, both children slept through both shakes, so hopefully no grumpy children and parents.

There is threat of disease with the water, and the death toll may reach over 300!  Just a waiting game now.

Thanks for posting the photo's.  Our beloved Cathedral is in ruins, I just burst out crying when I saw it falling to the ground, it holds a lot of memories, My family owned part of the land it sits on many years ago (1860).  I remember meeting my grandmother there with my mother as a little girl, a big journey on the bus as a 3/4 year old, a special outing to met up with your Gran and going to a Cafe for lunch.  It will never be the same.

Sorry I can not give details on any other statue, I saw Scott has fallen on the News.  No one is allowed near the Four Avenues, it is just too dangerous and we must let the E.M.S do their job.

My hubby is now off to work.  His boss is a complete idiot, no one is allowed back at work unless it is for the good of others.  I do not think carpet is a great concern to people.  He has a real mess to clean up, containers are coming and a better fork lift to lift those carpet rolls.  I said to him to be careful and get out is there are any aftershocks.

I still can not get hold of my elderly Aunt (she is the last link to my mother) The phones just are not working.  She will not have water or power, but her son lives across the road from her, so I know she will be safe.

I was able to wash children last night, put the plug in the bath to save the water, maybe get some washing done with it, and then scoop it out onto the garden.  If ggg granny could do it, so can I.

Christchurch is a beautiful city. It's rich in history, I lived there for four months, many moons ago.

Girls the pictures are lovely and this is a great way to remember how it once was.

We have about 289 international search and rescue helpers and are waiting on another 150 from the USA. It's humbling to know that when we're in need, support is there.

I'm amazed as these teams are self sufficent with shelter and food, etc..We're in the best possibe hands. Little Ole' NZ just isn't equipt to deal with a disaster on this scale.

Suzy, what a wonderfully strong attitude.  :)

I have been so frustrated since yesterday morning, being in the motorhome and relying on BBC radio news to tell me the latest from Christchurch. Unfortunately ( but justifiably, I think), they are rather more concerned with the state of emergency in Libya, so all NZ news has been secondary to what is going on there.

Like most of the UK Rootschatters, there really isn't much I can say but hope that there is some comfort in the fact that so many people are thinking of you.

Glad you were able to get some sleep Suzy and that the children slept through. Thankfully children are very resilient and although they will understandably be worried and clingy for a while, I'm sure they will bounce back quickly. You seem to be approaching things with the right attitude and this will give them confidence as well.

I'm full of admiration for you all in the way that you are facing this with such bravery. What is coming over in the interviews we are seeing on the television is that people are saying, it's happened, lets get it sorted and start to put things right.

My thoughts are with you all.

How can I explain what today is like?  Sun is out, helicopters flying over head and a couple of strong aftershocks which left me feeling sea sick.

Shocking news about Donna Manering from CTV.  Her children have been staying outside the building waiting for news, while some bastard robbed their house.  (Sorry mods but that is the only words for people like that).  What is it with people like that.

Was able to get hold of my cousin, she said my Aunt was fine, she lost a few tiles of her roof, had no phone, water or power but she is taken care of by her family.

Been speaking to people who worked in the city.  Honestly I think the memory and horror will play in their minds forever!  One friend said he had to step over bodies, so I think the media have not or not allowed to revel too much at this stage, but according to these people it is much worse than we know.

My youngest and family  live on the Mainland. We always live with the knowledge that at any time, they also could be affected by  a quake or a volcanic eruption.

At this time, I ,with all of you ,am totally concerned with this terrible time for the people of Christchurch.

According to NZ Herald  I would say that Libyans in NZ are equally concerned with the events and the safety of relations in their country as are many Brits. who are anxiously waiting for news of their loved ones .Especially those engineers stranded in the desert .

Just be thankful that with modern communications, we Do know what is going on ,even though it may not be our priority

I wept today when it was said that there was no hope for those in the TV station. I have no doubt that even then, all relations will hope until the last person is brought out.

Turned the T.V off and got busy.

Filled large buckets for water covered over with plastic outside, these will be used for washing children.   Plastic bag for toilet paper.  Buckets in sinks with water for hand washing and dishes, then I can tip them outside in the garden.  Even a friend is using a paddling pool for a quick bath.

Picked some apples, and vegetable out of the garden and shared with a single mother of 3 down the road.

Baked muffins, and bread.

Picked up all the books which had fallen out of my son's bookcase and pilled into one corner.

Even mowed the lawns!  Now I am tired but will have to think about something for dinner.

So we are prepared for water going out and a back up of food.

The pictures that have been on our televisions have all been so shocking.....I wonder anyone can cope......especially with all the aftershocks and also when they then hear the warnings of how long it could be before they have the basics of power, water and sewerage back again.

Suzy, glad to hear you and your family are all ok. Also all the other RC members who are in ChCh.

The news just seems to go from bad to worse, 98 dead and 226 reported missing, with serious concerns for their saftey.

I just feel so sad and overwhelmed, I don't think I can really comprehend the devastation and destruction, the things those wonderful rescuers are seeing must just be terrible.

My thoughts and prayers go out to all those in Canterbury..

Suzy how lucky you are your suburb seems unaffected, strange how earthquakes affect certain areas and not others. My BIL's Mother is in the eastern suburbs, she is 80 but by no means an 'old lady' everything that could break in her house did and the house is filled with liqufaction, half a metre in parts, she has no water, sewage, phone or power - her house will be demolished, and to top it off her son took  generators to her street so the neighbours could charge their cell phones and boil water, they were all stolen last night.

While everyone else is doing their utmost  to help in whatever way they can, there's the dregs of society who will take advantage.   It sickens me.

Good to hear from Leandra and Annie.  Both safe and well I hope?

Just watching channel 3.  What horrific stories.  A 5 week old baby missing and her mother.

Not sure if any other mother out there with under 15 years of age children, but mine have lost a few of their noddles.  Maybe their way of dealing with the whole thing, but drives me crazy with silly behavior, even had children from all over the neighbour hood show up at my place today.  Guess I should turn on that death ear and take no notice.

Will sign of today, need to have some time for myself.

I completely agree with all views on what should happen to looters.   How do you get into the mind of people like that?  Ok - so they may have suffered too, but for heavens sake - if everyone is in the same boat they should help each other, not just themselves  >:( >:( >:(

Hi All -
Sounds like you are coping admirably. Suzy don’t be too annoyed with the kids really they won’t understand all the distress regarding the quake. (Deep breaths needed! :-X)  I can remember my brother & I sat on the settee at home after a big quake watching telly to see if our school was shut. (In those days with no internet etc. we were always advised in case of emergency to tune into a particular TV station with an emergency broadcast frequency) I remember us both cheering and our hands punching the air when our school’s name finally appeared on an every increasing list.  The overwhelming significance is really lost on the majority of kids and in some ways this is not a bad thing.  I kind of feel you give them information on a need to know basis otherwise some will be unnecessarily disturbed up by it all.  After one of the quakes I remember turning on the water taps and a murky/muddy water coming out (one of the dams supplying the water to the city had fractured) I still did not understand the total significance of the situation.

Aniph – Yes, I remember my parent’s house looking in a similar state! I remember seeing all of my parents wedding china, which has been carefully stored over the years smashed on the pantry floor.  After the clean up my parent’s initially used rubber (elastic) bands to hold any cupboard doors closed in case any of the aftershocks dislodged the contents again!  Even today they use  in the kitchen what looks like the old fashion bungee cording with hooks on either end to hold the cupboard door shut in case of another quake.  This has saved a lot effort continuously picking up and cleaning up!  And of course anything heavy always needs to be put on shelves on the lower level.  There is a lot of stuff like this that has become second nature over the years.

Still finding it distressing to hear the reports coming out of the city….
Kind regards

... Not trying to diminish any trauma of the quake effects ...   ;) but I have to say Suzy, there's more clear floor space in your son's room than my girls had in theirs a lot of the time, don't know how they ever found anything! ... good move re the bolts and latches, with so many aftershocks! hopefully most people had secured heavy items too..

... seeing a lot more from the suburbs now and how people are having to cope and pitch in and help or have to relocate etc and now that they've nearly exhausted the rescue mission in the central city. For those outside NZ where news is probably focusing on CBD there are quite a few pics on the NZ Herald site http://www.nzherald.co.nz/ ... kiwi's are very resourceful! ... sounds like it's a bit cool and expecting rain down there, might be a few campers out in it with a bar of soap  :-\ lol

... so many individual stories, so traumatic for some, know close friends collected their university son from the airport last night as he just wanted to come home and wasn't coping too well after being evacuated. ... then there is the survivor guilt, quite normal but difficult to deal with ....

The young lad who served me was from down South in England
The shop was just off the square with lots of jackets Boot's  you name it in it .
I suppose that shop is gone as well
I keep watching the news and it just looks like an American movie

There was apparently a tour party in the tower at the time, 20+ people. They have started to remove all the loose bits from the top of tower so they can start moving the rubble at the bottom, according to TVNZ site, and TV1 news tonight.

Have been up the tower, quite a few years ago though. It is a long way up, and very narrow spiral stairs from what I can remember. Great view from the top though. Not a place to be caught in an earthquake.

Only been up the tower twice, did not like the feel of the enclosed area, plus it is a spiral stair case.

My thoughts exactly Tephra, bring back those stocks, throw rotten eggs at the low life and make them recover the bodies, About time the law stopped with the P.C, as these people have no respect toward others in need.

The temperature has dropped and getting darker earlier, tomorrow should be better.

A couple of very strong aftershocks this evening 4.4 and a 4.3 which were high to the surface.

New Zealand has 4 million people and it is often said that you can walk down any street in NZ and find someone you know (but a lesser chance of that now than when I was a boy). The degrees of separation are low and in Christchurch only about 2. Yet it has taken two days to contact all our friends a relatives to say that we were ok and to seek their status. As a genealogist compare this with 120 days for a letter by sailing-ship or even airmail.  Soon we realised that our family and friends have had  the full gamut of experience. A close friend went to school with one of the named dead and he knew of that death (and we by email) several hours before it was released to the media.  Our cousin's daughter was in one of those badly damaged buildings but ran out, the bricks and dust falling and billowing about her. She lost her handbag with all her bits and pieces, cell phone, money and bills that had to be paid.  Her husband came to look for her but they did not meet for three hours - her cell phone may have been ringing in the rubble.  My daughter has taken in two of her friends; they have lost everything in a totally collapsed apartment (they were out driving at the time).  Another cousin has had little damage in that suburb flooded by water and silt.  Another close friend, living in the badly affected area came away with only the treasured album of her son lost, with all her possessions in a fire several years ago.
We took our "refugees" back to their apartments this morning to collect their personal belongings.   Entered Christchurch by the tree-lined road near the airport through a virtually undamaged leafy suburb that many tourists enjoy. It was also lined with the green wheelie-bins all neatly lined up before the garbage trucks empty them and throw them around. Everyone there was going about their daily business, and  in our eyes, more normal than normal. Closer to the cordoned CBD the silt had been piled on the roadside the first stage of the cleanup.  On a clean area of the golf course in the park which I had left only a three days ago were lines of campervans arranged around portaloos. Further over was the tent city of the displaced.  At every, and it is every, corner of the roads leading into and within the cordoned CBD there are police and army  personnel. They could not have been more helpful once we had identified ourselves and our mission.  It is rather a miserable wet day and all had time to pause and chat after the necessities were done (This may have been a further assessment on their part of our intentions). Our "refugees" are fortunate that their house and apartment are uninhabitable only due to lack of water and sewer - "health reasons" on the notice. Into the mess to collect personal belongings, medicines, clothes, and empty the fridges of food before it rotted too much. Today the mess did not seem such a huge effort to clean, nevertheless it was left as is, bar for the path through it. Met some building assessors outside who were certain that we had not followed the proper procedure for entering - a little bit of bureaucratic power. Too late, we already had our stuff and there had been no aftershocks.  Only at home, at 6.30 pm did we learn that the road we took is  now closed because of an unstable building. The police showed more compassion under these circumstances and at the exit checkpoint wished us well. Had we been nearer the real damage and danger in the central city we would more likely to have been given a justifiable kick in the pants.  All of us far and near have admired the commitment and tenacity of the police, rescue teams and individuals in difficult, often dangerous, conditions. All thanks and praise to them.    (see next) MalNZ

And on my hobbyhorse - The TV presenters are in prim suits, without visible identification tags, suggesting that their suits are sufficient identification akin to the now dusty but brilliant boiler suits and jackets of the real workers and police. The portrayal of anguish sells more advertising than the tedium of finding fresh water or a serviceable toilet. Perhaps we are to blame for this in our search for armchair "experience" of a "reality" drama.
There is one thing that television has yet to portray - the smell.  Hell is not a folk memory of a fiery pit in the Afar Triangle, but a significant wrench in a city road relieving itself of odious gases created by far too much concrete, brick and tar that seals off the soil below.  TV also took a very narrow view of the CBD and little of the suburbs, though Lyttelton, South City and eastern suburbia are now getting the attention they deserve. Life is suburbia where individuals interact in daily chores and personal interactions, not the bureaucratic 9 to 5'ers pushing paper and sipping coffee on the sidewalk (though I do love doing the latter on warm days) .

With the best wishes and help of others, those affected pick up the pieces of their lives and continue. It is all one can do - no use complaining about a not too random event of nature.  For some it is certainly back to the basics of our g-grandparent immigrants. The newspaper reported that the prostitutes of the several greatly damaged Manchester Street "houses" are now at new stations and comment "we have to earn a living".

It is sad to see the city that we knew is now no longer with us just as the city of our parent's youth was changed by our generation. It will be replaced by something WE might not recognise as home, but it will be for those living here in the next 50 years. I know that they will do their best to make it so.

I have to agree with your comments about the media Mal, in particular the Television media. They are hell bent on getting pictures of bloodstained survivors and bodies if they are allowed to get near them and close up shots of weeping and distraught survivors. Not content with what they have been through and are going through they insist on confronting them with microphones and cameras.  Asking them stupid questions about how they feel and what it was like.

To those of us here in NZ it was nice to hear yesterday morning on Morning Report the calm voice of that true reporter Kim Hill who had obviously been brought back to fill the holes left by the dispatch of reporters to the Canterbury region. Her sympathetic interviews that I heard were very refreshing.

I now get all my news from either the internet or the radio.

Mal - you are providing a very clear picture of the courage and fortitude which is being so truly shown by the people of Christchurch.

Also you are paying a great tribute to wonderful people from places far and near that are there beside them  through this past week of devastation and great sadness!

I have chosen to watch very little of the television reporting - I find it very difficult to cope with the personal intrusion and public observation of injury and of individual heartbreak. That in no way lessens my compassion for what is happening for the people of Christchurch, their families and their friends.

I have the greatest respect and admiration for all the rescue and service organisations, agencies, Council etc. etc., and the incredibly difficult work they are doing.  You are all heroes!

Thank You Mal!

The spirit here is amazing. We loaded up with boxes of fruit and baking and decided to try New Brighton because we thought they were fairly trashed, though they weren't.

Found the water pick up point manned by the army/police who were great guys. Opened the van and asked people if they would like some fruit, they were so pleased. Got 2 hugs in a minute which made me tear up.

Looked at our block of flats, still standing amazingly! Tenants all ok ;D

Got back to Rangiora to hear they had closed the refugee centre at Cowles Stadium and were busing people out here.

Went to see what we could do, centre was ok but they were asking for hot food that they were helicoping into needed areas at 6pm. Now that is clever, something warm on a cold night!

We rushed home for an hour and cooked what we could - nice soup and nachos.

Felt useful for a change ;)

It has occured to me though, listening to Kiwis on the radio and reading the newspapers, that you lot are far more down to earth than we are over the ditch. We haven't had anything like this in UK, of course, but when anything does happen it's an "Incident".  So the motorway is closed for an incident - could be anything from a lorry spilling its load,  to a major pile-up to terrorists being rounded up, it's all the same just an incident.

Thrilled to report my relative and his family are safe and well. He's just had power restored. His house was just shaken up and suffered damage to doors and windows but otherwise is ok. His daughter's house is pretty bad and may have to be demolished though.  But everyone well and staying together in one place.  ;D

Once more reading through the threads
I think we are getting a better rundown of daily events on here than we get on the TV

I don't care for reporters on TV as you say on reports past

I here there was a wedding today in Christchurch
I wish the happy couple well

Mal keep your stories coming and take care all of you

Its just a pity we are so far away and cannot help you by hand

Ann. You must be relieved that your relatives are safe.

For the couple who married today, I wish them all the happiness in the world.

Mal, Please keep posting your stories, they tell us so much more than tv or newspapers here in the UK. Reporters mostly seem to want gory details, and surely they don't need to ask how someone felt. I would think that was obvious, whatever the situation. I am so pleased that you too were able to contact family at last.

Annie, I am sure that whatever you provide in the way of food is most welcome. Well done.

I agree about two degrees of separation.  My sister knew a women in the CTV building that was killed, and a friend's boss was killed while doing repairs to one of the churches.

I am not up to date on the death toll, had a email this morning from England saying 135.  We slept in this morning, but were woken earlier by two strong aftershocks.

Helicopters still flying overhead this morning.  Farmers have come into town with machinery to help.  2000 student army with shovels again.

Power back on the some parts but caused fires!

The Canterbury spirit has shown, people lending a hand in any form they can, right from a hug to cleaning up the liquid fraction.

Christchurch has always been a close knit city, we do know someone while out and about.  I even went to school with our Prime Minister John Key my husband attended school with his wife .

Joining in this day of Prayer and Remembrance with you great people in Christchurch and throughout New Zealand.

In God we need to trust, at such times we cry out'Why O Lord?'

My prayers are for everyone involved and the rest of the New Zealand nation as they reach out to help in whatever way they can, their fellow countryfolk.

A touch of the hand,
A nod of the head,
Silent tears
Openly shed.
We care!

God's Blessings.
