Title: COMPLETED Research Guidence or Help
Post by: kindu on Sunday 06 March 11 04:37 GMT (UK)
Hi all, If anyone one can guide me in the right direction for a missing ancestor. Her name was Daphne Pauline Neary at birth (born 20 Oct 1907) and also known as Daphne Pauline ward, she married Charles John Peterson in 1929 (Marriage Record shows name as Daphne Pauline Ward) She left her home in 1949 on one of her childrens 12th birthday, she saidto the child she was going to get them a birthday present and never returned leaving behind nine children. and leving a 12 year old child feeling guilty for the rest of her life that it was her fault that she went missing, No family member has had any contact with her since.
She had left her family prior to 1949 and was living with a man and using this surname of Anderson. Her eldest son had located her and made her return home to her children.

Thanks, any help would be appreciated

Maria

Maybe Ward was her fathers name, why she took that name for her marriage.

I'm sure there were many other things going on..sadly Daphne would have the answers.  There is a death for a Daphne Neary on BMD but the birth year is wrong.

Hi Maria

So sorry, that is such a terribly sad story.   :'(

Good news though  ... I've found her death.

[Her actual birthdate was 21 October 1907 - according to the online birth registration - d/o Agnes Ethel. ]

NZ Death

1991 - CLARKE - Daphne Pauline - d.o.b.  21 October 1907

In case you'd like to order the record, see >>

Hi again Maria

I'm still checking a few things, but it appears Daphne Pauline was living in the South Island from 1963 through to 1981.

There is also a probate record available at Archives New Zealand (Christchurch Office - currently closed due to the recent tragic earthquake.)

CLARKE - Daphne Pauline - Little River - 1992

Date of death for Daphne Pauline CLARKE was
9 December 1991 (probably in the Christchurch area given that probate record shows the address, Little River.)

Wasn't able to find a cemetery record (I'm guessing though, maybe cremation) ?

Her last husband was John George Clarke.  They lived in Council Rd, Little River.

In the early 60s they were living in Invercargill.

Hello Lucy,
Thank you so much for finding Daphne.  I have been searching for nearly twenty years.
Daphne is my Grandmother. The 12 year old was my Aunt Beverly. Daphne's three daughters are deceased
but her six sons are all still living. I phoned my Dad in NZ this morning to tell him and he to thanks you.
My Dad turns 83 this year. He now planes to visit the South Island latter in the year.
thank you again, Knowing where their mother is will mean allot to my dad and his brothers.
the not knowing has affected all their lives in different ways.

What you do is wonderful,

Regards
Maria

Hi Spades
I know one way to find that info, I was in process of checking some posible at the time
this new eroll search at A$ry is a gem
if you have not so common names you can just enter first names and then work though options...The answer was on the first page of results

Hi Maria

Happy to have been able to help.

Your story struck a chord with me - my Gran also "sailed off into the sunset" leaving in her wake, two tiny babies.  After decades of searching, I finally discovered her fate just six months ago.   She'd lived to the ripe old age of 92 but had been abandoned in a nursing home here, after the children of her second family, had shot through to live in Australia.  :-X

I do hope that finding your Daphne has helped to ease some of the heartache your Dad, his brothers and your family have endured.   :)

Kind wishes
~  Lu

I ordered the death certificate for Daphne last week, hopefully it will arrive this week and we get the answer we have been looking for and we can let the rest of her sons know what happened to her. I will post the outcome of the certificate here when it arrives.

Here is the latest update, received Death Certificate from New Zealand, no information regarding parents on it but have found her burial location (Cremated), we have since found a nephew and he has put us in contact with a lady who knew Daphne for many years, the verbal descriptions of Dapne match so we have sent over some photo's for confirmation, so now we are waiting in anticipation.  :)

More updates to follow

Hi all, this should be the final update to this story, but I don't think it will be, we have had photo confirmation that this Daphne is the same Daphne that went missing in the 1940s, All her living children that we have contacted are thrilled that she has been found, even bringing one family member to tears (happy tears). thanks to everyone on this board and especially Lucy

Thank You

Maria  :)
