Title: Corinthian sailing Glasgow to Quebec, 29 Apr., 1909
Post by: RedMystic on Friday 04 March 11 17:41 GMT (UK)
Hi all.

Where would I look to find a ship's record / story details to match up with the ones that I have for my great grandmother's story?

My great grandmother, Mary Helen Cheyne (travelling as Mary Helen Bain, husband-to-be's surname) of Peterhead, Aberdeenshire, Scotland travelled from Glasgow and arrived in Quebec City on the Corinthian on April 29, 1909.

As the story goes, the ship had a rough sailing and everything movable had to be thrown overboard. This included the cattle, all furnishings, and all the personal belongings of the passengers. With her trunk deep in the ocean Mary Helen arrive in Canada with only the clothes she was wearing (and a little red ceramic chicken money bank which is still in the family).

Can anyone provide some direction as to where I should look to verify the story about the ship's difficulties?

TX as always.

The Quebec Chronicle online at http://collections.banq.qc.ca/ark:/52327/1854091 has an article about the sailing on April 30, 1909 page 3. It says it was a stormy sailing but nothing about throwing items overboard.

TX very much. That was an interesting read and I would never have found it.  :)

I didn't realize immigrants were supposed to yell as they arrived to prove they didn't have lung problems. I supposed that had something to do with TB. :o
