Title: Parrott family in Wootton
Post by: SMcDermid on Friday 04 March 11 16:20 GMT (UK)
Hi all,

I'm working on the Parrott side of my family tree.  I got as far as my ggg grandfather, and I've hit a wall.

I'm hoping someone around here might have some information that would help me, or can point me in the right direction.

Here is the info that I have so far...

John Parrott (my ggg grandfather), was born abt. 1827, I just have England listed, I'm not sure where, but the 1861, 1871 and 1891 censuses list him as living in Wootton, Bedfordshire.

John married Sarah Bettle (born July 1828 in Cranfield)

The children that I have listed are:
James (b. 1851)
William (b. 1856)
George (b. 1859)
Emma (b. 1861)
Joseph (b. 1864)
Sarah (b. 1869)

Joseph, my gg grandfather, was born in Aug 1864, in Wootton.  He married Elizabeth Lay (b. 1863 in Stagsden) in Wootton.

The family came to Canada in Oct. 1906, settling in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada.

Most of their children were born in England, before coming to Canada.

What I'm hoping to find is some information about John's parents, who I have listed as David and Jane (nee Shephard), but all I have is the names.

If anyone has any info on this family that they could pass along, that would be so great.

Thank you.

- Sean

The 1861 census has his Birthplace as PINNER, Middlesex.

RG9/Piece 990 Folio 125 Page 8 Wootton

He married Sarah in 1854, Ampthill Reg District: so the eldest son named James Bettle Parrott must be her child.

Marriages Dec 1854

Bettle  Sarah    Ampthill  3b 837
Margett  Charlotte     Ampthill  3b 837
Parrott  John     Ampthill  3b 837
Pulley  George     Ampthill  3b 837

He is already in Wootton in the 1851 census, in Service as a Farm Labourer to the OLIVER family.

Again his birthplace is Pinner, Middx

Thank you Mort29.

I wondered about James, as some had him listed as James Bettle, and others had James Bettle Parrott, so I wasn't sure if Bettle was the middle name.  I didn't have the date that John and Sarah married, so it looks like you're right, he would have been a son from another father.

Now - there is a David & Jane Parrott in Wootton in 1841 - HO107/Piece 6/Book 28 Civil Parish Wootton County Bedfordshire Enumeration District 14 Folio 6 Page 6 - Bourn End

David Parrot 40 Ag Lab (looks like an F in the 'whether born in Scotland/Ireland/Foreign Parts')
Jane Parrot 40 Lace Maker Not born in County
John Parrot 14 (Ancestry have age as 20 !)  Ag Lab Not born in County
Ann Parrot 12 Lace Maker Born Bedfordshire

so that looks good so far, but you need their marriage and try and find out more about David's origins  :)

The Marriage is in FamilySearch:-

11 Feb 1823 — Houghton Conquest, Bedford.

David Parrot to Jane Sheppard.

Thank you so much for your help.

I'm curious about that "F" in the 1841 census for David.  I was talking with my grandmother (who married into the Parrott family), and she said she had heard that David was born in Ireland, so could it be that maybe the F was actually an "I"?

David and Jane are the ones I was most curious about, so this info has been very helpful.

Compare the letter with F of Farmer or FS and the I of Ind on the facing page. It doesn't look like either. On the other hand the only other option is S and it looks even less like the S of FS. On balance it looks to me most like a badly formed I, for Ireland

David

Why didn't I look at the 1851 where his birthplace is written in full - Ireland!
