Melbourne, Derbyshire comes under the Shardlow district.

There are 2 births for a Jane James in Shardlow, between 1856 and 1861:

Mar qtr 1859
Dec qtr 1860

There is also a death:

Dec qtr 1859

The 2nd Jane James (1860) is the daughter of William & Jane James of New Yard Melbourne (RG09/2489/60/13).

Do you have the marriage certificate of Frederick & Jane?
What I mean to say is: do you have incontrovertible evidence that they were, in fact, a couple?

The problem is I can't find Frederick with Jane in either 1861 or 1871.
But I can find Frederick with Caroline?!

I can't find that family in 1861 either.

This might be the James/Caroline marriage mentioned above:

Marriages Dec 1857
Brookes  Caroline     Shardlow  7b 623
Disney  Eliza     Shardlow  7b 623
Hinds  Joseph     Shardlow  7b 623
James  Frederick     Shardlow  7b 623

I'd also like to know if you have the Frederick James/Jane Davy marriage certificate ...

What is the date of the 1856 marriage?
Are you saying that daughter Jane was born Dec quarter of 1856?
Was Jane born before or after their marriage?

I believe now that Jane is the daughter of William James and Jane? On 1881  census Jane (mother) is a widow and her daughter Jane is living with her. Melbourne. Jane (mother) is 61 and daughter is 20. I have found the death of a William  James who died Dec. Qu. 1872. Not sure of who Jane is and wondering if Jane was their only child

So Frederick James (the original subject of this thread) is no longer of interest?

Perhaps you start from the beginning and tell us exactly what you are seeking, and what you already know?

It looks like the Frederick James who married 1856 derby district -married Elizabeth Boden -not jane Davy

this seems to be Jane from 1881 census - mother Jane -and her siblings and parents

Thanks for the census results. I did more research also I found William and Jane's marriage in 1838 .In fact there are 2 results on Family search  One has them marrying 18 Oct 1838 and the other is Sept 23 1838. It has her last name as Willm But  2 of the children are Mary Wyln and Joseph Joseph Wyln James .Thomas b1842  has the spelling Wilmn .Your info is much appreciated All I have to do now see if I can find the birth of William and Jane

Strange!
It seems to be a more common mistake today, than it was in years gone by?  ???

I have yet to find a mis-spelled Garrad on a census.
One set of divorce papers, yes.

Oh well, I have learned to live with it!!

If only I could lay claim to the fortune of the former Crown Jewellers (Garrad & Sons) or the record-deck manufacturers?!?!  :D
