I'm trying to find out some more information about my Great Grandfather William Smith who was a professional footballer. He has a Wikipaedia entry under the name Bill Smith (Edwardian Footballer). He played for Brentford (1912-13), Southampton (1913-14), and Halifax Town (1914-15). I'm really trying to track down his birth, but there are lots of William Smith's around! I know that he had died by 1940 when my nan and grandad married.
My nan had William's signing on papers for Southampton, but she died in 1983, and my dad has no idea where they went after that!
I'd be grateful for any help.

Thanks t mo. From what I've heard from my dad, my nan had tried to get information from Southampton FC, but they had lost most of their records in a fire many years ago. I had wondered about contacting the other clubs directly as well, and will be giving that a try too.

Have you tried contacting the FA or the League? If he was a professional would he not have been registered?
