I am still having problems tracing my grandfather James William Darvill born 1873 in Hammersmith before the 1911 census when he is married to my grandmother Emily b1886.
We cannot find him on any other census so cannot find the rest of his family.
The only Darvill we found which seems to fit because of the slater/tiler connection is.
William Darvill b 1845 ? Hammersmith with wife Fanny b 1850 with children
Lizzie b 1875
John b 1877
Rose b 1880
George b 1882
Henry b 1885
Charles b 1887
Louisa b 1890
But still no James William b 1873
Could this be this be the same Darvill family?

In 1901 he seems (as James DARVILL) to be at 113 Brackenbury Rd, Hammersmith with wife Elizabeth, a stepson Arthur DRACOTT, and an infant daughter Alice:
RG13/47/45/35 (shout if you want full details)

In the 1870 births range, Lizzie and John seem to be registered in Fulham (will be Kensington prior to 1875 I think) but no sign of yer maun James ..... could he have reversed forenames in later life ?
-
Is this the marriage to Emily - and if so have you obtained the certificate to find out further details including those of James' father?
Marriage, Sep qtr 1906
James William DARVILL

I see that we are duplicating work already done on this family:

Yes thank you for that I asked last time about the previous partner with the child Alice who then dissappears and he married Emily Lydia Bainbridge. I still cannot the trace him any further back that is why I have asked for you help again. Do you think he has used his other name? If so I still cannot trace him back very far even as a William. I just want to be sure I am tracing back the correct James William Darvill. I would appreciate your opinion as to should I continue with the William Darvill family even if it is not clear that James William is part of that family.
Thanks for your input.

a tough one, esp with no Birth Index entry in the Hammersmith area.
I cant recommend attaching him to the family you mention w/o more proof ....
but ... looking at the 1891 census of Hammersmith - RG12/Piece 38 Folio 133 Page 52
a son WILLIAM has appeared born c1873 - Slaters Labourer.
actually he is there (along with an older sister Alice*) in the 1881 census too - RG11/Piece 57 Folio 57 Page 43 - but you didnt include him in your list of names ?
*Registered Kensington Dec Q 1869

Thnak you very much Mort 29 you can see why I am reluctant to add the William Darvill family to my family tree especially when there is not a James William listed there.
I cannot seem to find my granfathers parents well not for sure on any of the census records.
I really do appreciate all the help this site has given me today and recently but my grandfather does seem to be rather elusive and I bow to your greater knowledge as I am rather new at this.
Thanks again.

I guess they called him William at home ?

What do you think - is he your man ?

To be honest I do not know I had not thought about a different spelling of the surname. We had worked out his d o b by the age on the 1911 census so it could have been December 1872, Is there any sign of his parents on this registration? Or am I still playing a guesing game?
-
You would have to purchase the certificate id'ed by the Birth Index I showed to ascertain parents names. Or get his 1906 Marriage Papers to confirm his Father's name & occupation ..It really looks good to me - right age, right PoB, a name in common, occupation ...
its usual to see the census age differ by a year in these cases ... where someone is born late in the year.

Thank you again for the information. We will find it difficult to do as you suggest because we live in South Western France so do not have access to that kind of information really.
I have looked again at the 1881 census records on Genes Reunited which is where we do all our searches and they are both still coming up as not found. I have tried changing the spelling and place of birth etc but have not been successful at all.
Thank you again for your help.

Thank you very much Mort29 you have been extremely helpful and we do appreciate all your effort.
It looks like we could not find them because of the difference in the spelling of the name. I will have to be more inventive in the future.
We think you are right and it is the right family
Thanks again.

Let me know if its the correct Birth Certificate :)

Hello Mort 29 and other researchers who have helped on this search.
