Title: Germany: HEINZ, Nassau, Hessen
Post by: francois on Sunday 27 February 11 21:04 GMT (UK)
Is there anyone who can point me in the right direction on this one?
I am researching the Heinz side of my family and the information I have about German origins is scant, and for me, very difficult to know how to find.

I have Frederick Heinz born 1838 in Nassau. He was in Glasgow Scotland in the mid 1850s with a group of other German families all at the one address, so presumably connected in some way.

On his marriage certificate his profession was musician and so were some of the others Heinz member I have come across in Scotland in the ssame period.

The 1861 census in Glasgow states that at the address with Fred Heinz    there  were:

Marian? (looks like) Heinz aged 31 married  dressmaker Germany Nassau

Paul (might be ) Kramer lodger unmarried 21  blacksmith Germany Nassau

All  the Germans in this group are probably known to each other as they come from the same place. Possibly Marian is Friedrich Heinz's  sister in law.

Fred Heinz's father father was Johan Heinz and his mother Katerina Debrig (that's what it looks like to me). The census taker was Scottish and obviously would have written what he heard although .

Also in the next house there was  Philip Meier (probably Myer/Meyer) who was 32 and an iron foundry labourer from Nassau in Germany. He was with his wife Mary aged 35 and also from Nassau. The children were, Konrad aged 6 a scholar and born in Glasgow like his sister Mary aged 4 and his brother Philip aged 2.

Also in the house was William Heinz a bricklayer labourer from Nassau  and also another lodger Nasdaur? Diekle? a 31 year old unmarried lodger who worked as an iron foundry labourer and he was from Darmstatt.
Is there anyway I can find my way back to Frederick Heinz's place of origin and discover more about his family? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Frank,

Welcome to Rootschat  ;D

Unfortunately I don't think that I am going to be much help. The books I have are for very specific areas (Ober Rosbach & Gruningen, in Hessen Darmstadt), I know nothing of Nassau.  :-\

I had a bit of a look on Ancestry and I can see the 1861 census transcription you mention, it puts the birthplaces as Germany, State of Nassau...which is not altogether very helpful.

I had a look at the "England, Alien Arrivals, 1810-1811, 1826-1869" and there are several Heinz records.

There are 3 entries for Fredrich Heinz as below:

Fredrich Heinz - arrived London 6 March 1843, occ Labourer of Germany - from New York (I think we can safely discount this one as he is too old)
Fredrich Heinz - arrived London 13 March 1850 on the "Batavier", occ v diff to read of Von Ebersbach....not sure about this one, probably discountable too due to age
Fredrich Heinz - arrived London 20 Mar 1856 on the "Batavier" from Holland, occ v. difficult to read of what ancestry as transcribed as Rugslarne....very difficult one to read though
also
Franz Heinz - arrived London 16 Jun 1856 on the "Tribent" from Hamburg, Germany, occ Merchant looks like from Viena

I couldn't find any that match your other Heinz's either, but perhaps they came straight to Scotland rather than through England.

Maybe popping your query on the general Europe board might get some responses from the German researchers out there...it can't hurt  ;)

Sorry I couldn't be more help

The 1850 Friedrich Heinz is a joiner/carpenter (Schreiner) from Ebersbach (but doesn't say which one - there are at least 17 places called Ebersbach, mostly in Bavaria and Saxony).
The 1856 Friedrich Heinz is a baker (Bäcker), born in Russia (Rußland).
