Title: "Thurlow House" Liverpool
Post by: lesleyhannah on Monday 28 February 11 15:54 GMT (UK)
The latest certificate I've received shows my children's paternal g-g-grandmother's address when she died in 1945 as "Thurlow House" Liverpool .  Does anyone know where this is? She died in Belmont Road (I remember there being a hospital there when I was a child) so I'm guessing it's that sort of area (L4 or L6 I think).

Thanks for any help.

I take it they were tennament/blocks of flats from reading from the bbc site above by Ged Fagan.

Thanks Migky - my mum lived in tenements in south Liverpool just like those in the picture. Still not sure whereabouts in Liverpool Thurlow House was. I'm planning a bit of 'cemetery searching' in the future so the location of the address would be useful.

But very grateful for your help - I've never heard the tenements called anything except 'Gardens' so I was thinking Thurlow House was probably an institution of some kind - completely going down the wrong path, so you've saved me quite a bit of unnecessary searching. thanks again.

Thurlow House was a tenament block on the same site as Gerard Gardens roughly where the flyover into Dale St is now.
You will find Thurlow house on this site.

I know there was a Thurlow Street, off Richmond Row, perhaps it was something to do with that?

Should be in the bottom left hand corner here

Thanks for the links - just spotted my mum's flat in Speke Rd Gardens!

Hope I can ask a second question here - does anyone know where a catholic who died in Thurlow House is likely to be buried? My son's hoping to do a bit of 'graveyard research' but we don't know where to begin.

Any suggestions welcomed, as I can contact the churches to see if they can help.

The big Catholic cemetery was Ford. You could also try Yew Tree and Allerton/Springwood.

Thanks Ann. Don't think it'd be Allerton - but Ford sounds very possible. I'd never heard of it, but will look online to see if it's possible to buy or send for lists of names. Thanks again for your help.

These prove quite useful too. But I think 1945 is probably a little late for most of the indexes. May help as you go further back though.

Thanks to you both for the links. I have written to one of the sites asking for a search in the local cemetery. Will let you know how I get on.

I know the index of burials for Ford was held in Liverpool Records Office, William Brown St Liverpool, as are the records for Yewtree Cem, which is also a RC Cem and people from the City centre are also known to have been buried there too. I'm not sure where they are held now as a lot of redevelopment of the records office is being done, but I'm sure some one will pop up and tell you where they can be viewed.

They're on the second floor of the museum - a few doors down the hill.  ;)

Hi,
I had ancestors living in Thurlow St in 1881 (census) and apparently they had a servant! Can anyone tell me if this sounds right for this street/area please?

If so, they fell on harder times as by 1901 they were in a 2 up 2 down in bootle  :-\
