my 3x greatgrand father Tobias Lake has stated in all census returns from Docking in Norfolk and is on the IGI that he was born abt 1800 in Gibraltar... After 4 years of searching and paying out ££££££S for professional searches for his birth in the areas of Spain and Portugal nothing has been found...
I'm thinking now has this man misled the family with the word Gibraltar....!!!! In the late 1820's he's married an Irish girl from County Clare and is serving in Ireland with the 64th regiment of foot... then in 1838 he's in Docking, Norfolk!!!!!!
I now have thoughts that could this man have been born at Gibraltar Point on the Wash lincolnshire....! or am i about to waste more time and money.... PLEASE fellow researchers I'm in need of any help or advice... with regards to all Pamal

on the IGI are three records saying he was born about 1800 in Gibralta, near Spain.
All of these are submitted records.
This means that someone has read the census records and then sent in a form to the LDS saying he was born in Gibralta off Spain. Garbage in Garbage out.
So they have got it wrong and I expect the Gibralta Point you mention is where he was actually born. He was not misleading anyone - just stating a fact which others misunderstood due to their ignorance.
I sugest you have a look at what coverage is in the IGI for someone who may have been born at Gibralta Point. The IGI does not cover all Parish records.
Bryan
PS the 1841 census has him as N - not born in Norfolk but if he was born outside of England it would have said S W I or F for Scotland, Wales, Ireland or Foreign parts so you can be reasonably sure he was born in England.

It says here IGI entries are limited for Norfolk, perhaps a search in parish registers will reveal something.

Unfortunately this is a little late. it starts at 1813 but there are quite a few Lake`s
He also could have been a Nonconformist .

Thanks guys for your time and suggestions, its very much appreciated :) I'll get started on searching the IGI parish records around Gibraltar point...
Incidentally do you know of a honest/reliable researcher who would know his way round the army muster rolls from the National archives??....
as I know Tobias Lake was serving in the 64th regiment of foot in Ireland between 1827 and 1835,
kind regards pamal

Great idea.
I was searching for a Thomas Cooper born 1778 in Gibraltar (the Rock) but I will now search Lincolnshire for connections. I see some Thomas Cooper references there so here's hoping.
thanks for the redirection :)

Hi Pamal - I just found your post on the internet about our shared ancestor, Tobias Lake (my 4 x great grandfather). I'm descended through his daughter Mary (born in "Galt", Ireland just before they came over to Docking) and the family that descended from her that stayed in North Norfolk.
I was thrilled about your enlightened idea of the hamlet of Gibraltar near Skegness being Tobias's origin (hardly suprising a census taker had never heard of the place), and I just wondered if you had uncovered anything further there since your posting in February?
I also see that you have discovered that he served in the 64th Regiment of Foot (which would explain how he came by an Irish wife). I never knew that Tobias served in the army though until I read your post - could you share the information you have?
I'll happily share the info I have collected about his descendants, if you are interested. From the looks of the names you are researching, I think Tobias and wife Jane are probably our most recent joint ancestors though.

Hi, only just read your posting, yes i would very much like to know what information you have of Tobias Lake descendants.... I too am related thro his daughter Mary born abt 1833 (Galt in Belfast), she married Samuel Melton in Docking.
I discovered Tobias served in the 64th regiment thro his daughter Sarah's baptism record in Ireland, (I'm still searching for Mary's baptism and her sister Jane's and also Tobias's marriage to Jane Carroll from county Clare.

Hi. Your post was enlightening for me, but not quite in the way I was expecting, as you've highlighted an error in my research. I've mixed up a Mary LAKE (Born approx 1836) and Mary Ann LAKE (Born approx 1833)... :-[
This bit of my family tree was pretty much the first I looked at about 3 years aso and I've never thought to question it since. In my naivety, I wasn't thorough enough with fact checking, and discounted some red flags. I think was a bit excited about the potential Gibraltar and Ireland connection.
Re-doing my research last night, my family line goes back to Mary LAKE, who married James CALLABY on 25th December 1860. Where I had it wrong before is with her parents. It now looks like they are Anguish Thomas LAKE and Lucy SMITH; not Tobias LAKE and Jane...
I'm not sure how/if the two LAKE families are connected.
I also seem to have "traded" a solider (Tobias), for a criminal, Anguish :-[ . It looks like he was imprisoned twice. I have yet to track him down on the 1851 census too, as he isn't with the rest of the family - maybe he was locked up a third time...
-
Hiya, I know what you mean about not checking the facts thorough enough as I've made errors that way too,
I knew about Anguish and his lock up time...(i think it was maybe petty thieving as in rabbits off the squires estate, to feed his family) if so you can't knock the man for that!
I too think that Anguish and Tobias Lake were related, as why would a soldier born Gibraltar? with an Irish wife and children settle in Docking Norfolk??? Tobias must have had family connections in the area, and also the fornames Anguish and Tobias are a bit odd!
Its been quite a while since I last did some digging around on the Lake family, I,ll have another go and see if I can find anything new, I'll let you know my findings.
