Would anyone know how to obtain old photos/illustrations of Relugas House / estate, late 1800's?
Thanks!

I was in Elgin the other day and I had a look. There are several photographs of the old Relugas House, but all except two are copies of the same photograph as the one on the lost country houses web site. If you get in touch through the web site, they will make you photocopies of them at very modest cost.

Thank You Jen for the old postcard site. The old house was considerable larger that the present one.
And Thank You to Forfarian, for taking the time to look this up in Elgin! I did find the House listed and know now what information they do hold on it and have contacted them to see if I can purchase a scan to be emailed to me.. should be easier to do that than photocopy and snail mail to Canada. Do you know if they do that?
I would love to visit this estate someday and the woods. My Gt Gt Grandfather, Finlay McLeod was a gardener (labourer) here and lived in Relugas Village, before and at the 1881 census time. In the 1891 census they were in Lochaber, Rafford.
...with Appreciation, Heather

Do you know if they do that?
Checked today. Yes, they have a scanner and can scan old photographs, subject to copyright etc.

My great great grandfather George Cowie was the gardener at Relugas House until sometime in the 1860's when he and his family moved to Elgin. Last year I visited Relugas and although the house is not the same one he would have known - it, together with the gardener's house, has been rebuilt - there are one or two features that are still the same - the ice house, the clock tower - and the tradesmen's entrance!!!! I obtained a photograph of the house from the Moray Heritage Centre - if you have a chance to visit they are really helpful.

Thanks Forfarian and Ayresa1 !
I now have the photo I was after , Relugas House 1878, printed , and am just today am putting it into my family heritage scrapbook I am very happy with the quality of the scan. If and when I get to visit Scotland, Relugas estate is definitely on my list !!
Ayresa... that is so neat your ancestor worked there too in the gardens! And I now know what that tower is ! thanks. A clocktower ... is it near a stone bridge? I am trying to get an overall idea of the estate . I did glean some modern pics off the internet of the present house and one does show the clocktower. In my 1878 photo, I can just see what looks like a stone railing maybe on a bridge. The clocktower is not visible, obscured by trees from the vantage point of the photographer. Did you take pics when there? I would be very interested in what you found there !
If anyone is interested in this 1878 photo I am willing to share, (I paid enough for it !!) , Contact me and I can email it. (*) It is too large of a file to post here.
Thanks again all, Heather

If you would like to send me your address via 'Personal Messages' I can send you a couple of photos. They aren't very good I'm afraid as it was raining at the time of our visit and the cloud ceiling would be best described as 'low'. I think they are too dark to scan.

I would be very interested in seeing the 1870 pic of Relugas House please - I grew up near the ruins of it. Thank you.
