I think he was born in Scotland but haven't been able to find anything on ScotlandsPeople to date, his son, James Barr, moved to Durham so I just wondered if Robert moved the whole family to Durham first.

Hi,

When & where was James born? It is always a great help if you can put down all the info you may have to make things a little easier when searching.

So James Barr was born 1867 in Ayrshire Scotland  and his father was Robert.

Although James married in Durham - it was 38yrs later so it's more likely that the family were in Scotland in 1871

From the IGI

JAMES BARR   Birth:  20 MAR 1869   Kilmarnock, Ayr
Father:  ROBERT BARR    Mother:  MARY DONALD

1871 shows father Robert as a farmer of 110 acres

JAMES BARR  Birth:  04 JUL 1869   Dalry, Ayr
Father:  ROBERT BARR    Mother:  MARY NELSON

As shown in my previous reply

They are the only 2 entries on the 1871 census who were born in Ayr

Do you think this fits with the Henney family you've found?

I didn't find a Henney family - you did.  My reply was to rule him out

What was Jame's occupation when he married Grace?

Have found a few census results for Scotland but can not tie them in exactly, birth dates differ a little.

When James married Grace he was a Millwright - not sure he had been that all his working life.

I can not seem to spot either James or Grace in the 1901 census. Have you found them? I can only see Grace in 1881.

I'm sorry, yes I have found Grace on a 1901 Census, it appears she is still living with her parents at the age of 23.  So James Barr is on his own somewhere.
