Greetings all, This is my first time in exploring family history in Tipperary and need some guidance as to where to start. I have had great success through rootschat in other counties, but this is my first for Tipperary.
I am researching the Purcell family. The following is what I know:
John Purcell from Templemore immigrated to Australia in 1847 on the Royal Saxon, aged 21 as a Labourer, Religion R/C.
I have a marriage certificate of John in Melbourne in 1854 where his parents are given as John Purcell (Farmer) and Ellen Quirk.
So, where to from here? How do I go about locating John Purcell (snr) and his wife Ellen Quirk in Tipperary?
I have "googled" many websites but just need some direction. Other than the above, I know nothing about John Purcell & Ellen Quirk.
Thank you

Hello Robyn,
Well this is interesting. How do you fit in with the Purcell and Quirk family?
John Purcell who immigrated to Australia is my husband's great-great-grandfather (wife is Margaret Carroll (aka Margaret Murphy). Their son, John Purcell who married Mary Josephine Howard, had a son Edward Purcell who is my husband's grandfather.
I have not had any success in finding John Purcell and Ellen Quirk in Tipperary. Have you?
Look forward to hearing from you.
Regards,
Suzanne

From the Moyne and Templetuohy RC parish registers, the following baptism of 23 December 1821 looks like it may be related:
? [child's forename] of John Purcell and Ellen Quirk Longorchard Sponsors Michael and Judith Quirk (bottom of left page):

The townland of Longorchard here:

The tithe applotment books show an entry for a Michael Purcell in Long Orchard for years ending 1815 and 1816, also a Widow Quirk:

Here's another baptism (23 October 1825) from the same register, Rody of John Purcell & Ellen Quirk: Sponsors Michael Quirk and Mary Dempsy (left page):

Hi gaffy
Thank you for these baptism references. The first one looks as if the child had died, but the second one could be a hint so will follow that one up.
Cheers,
Suzanne

I have a Michael QUIRK in my tree.
He was born in 1790 in Nenagh. There are lots of gaps in the Nenagh records so I haven't got very far with this family.

Thanks for your Quirk information. I think I need to extend my boundaries outside of Templemore.

I don't suppose you have taken a DNA test?

Hi,
The Purcell and Quirk families belong to my husband and he isn't really interested in taking a DNA test unfortunately.

Hi There, my name is Tom Quirk. I am trying to trace any info on a Mary Quirk born in Wexford, (not sure if town or county) her father's name was William and her mother Mary. Her siblings were Thomas, Catherine and Ellen. She was born in 1859 and the family eventually settled in Liverpool. Any help would be appreciated.
