I am looking for information on my Fathers Mother born abt 1893 and died 1962 in Glasgow. My Father was born in 1928 named Joseph. any help?
-
Hi and welcome to Rootschat :)
Was Murray her maiden name? There were 9 Jane/Janet Murray deaths in Glasgow in 1962. No Jeans. None were b. 1893. A quick age calculation (using 40 as max age and 16 as min age in 1928) gives us a max age at death of 74 and a min age of about 50.
Of the 9 deaths, there are 4 possibles in this age range. The nearest to 1893 was aged 67 and died in Milton. Other surname was Rae.
Do you have any idea which part of Glasgow she died in?

Hi again
I found 3 possible births for your father, if his surname was that of his mother. Do you know where he was born and if he had a middle name.

Hello there, thanks for the reply. My father was born at Stobhill Hospital. I believe his mothers funeral service was at St. Aloyisios Catholic church in Glasgow. As far as I know, he didn't have a middle name and from what I've been told his fathers name was listed as McIntosh?
-
Hi again :)
I'm not sure that the ones that I found are yours :-\
I'll draw this to the attention of Sancti and Monica as they are knowledgeable about RC matters.

Hi Redmond
Sorry, lots of questions. Where did your father's surname show as McIntosh? Have you a copy of his birth cert in 1928? There is only one entry for a Joseph M*Intosh in Lanarkshire for 1928.
Sometimes, marriage and death certs can provide additional information on parents. Have you been able to see your father's marriage and death certificates?
What's the source for your grandmother's death being in 1962? As you can see from JL's searches, nothing is quite fitting for a 1962 death with a birth year c. 1893. How have you been able to confirm this death year or is this an estimated year?
See what I mean, lots of questions!
Monica :)

Hello Monica, thanks for the reply. I have a copy of his condesed birth certificate showing his name as Joseph McIntosh born 1928 address of birth I looked up as Stobhill Hospital Glasgow. I haven't found the death or marriage cert yet of his mother, trying to locate it at my mothers house where she also has my fathers long form birth certificate I am told. Perhaps the Joseph Mcintosh that you found is the correct one, is there any way you can forward that information on to me? I really appreciate the help, thank you. I hope to have further info in the next few days.

the source for the death in 1962 is just from my mothers fading memory I'm afraid, hope to see the documents in a couple of days
kind regards

You are in a period for your father's birth where certificates cannot be viewed on line on the official pay to view site www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk. The cut off to view birth certs on line, as images direct from the birth register is currently 1910, increasing one year every year - due to data protection.
From what you say, your mother might have some details on old documents. Good place to start :) The key documents that you need to try and find would be his full birth cert, which hopefully your mother will have put away. Also his marriage cert will help you with his parents' information. This is an example of what a birth and marriage cert look like from the Scotlands People site:
Birth www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/content/images/famousscots/birthCharlesRMcIntosh1868.tif
Marriage www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/content/images/famousscots/Marriagekeirhardie.tif
As you can see, they are very informative and should include full details on parents. For a birth cert, it should include the date and place of parents' marriage. If your paternal grandparents' weren't married when your father was born, this will be a little more of a problem for you when trying to find out about them. As JL mentioned earlier, his birth entry could be either the surname of Murray or McIntosh.
If your father's mother went on to (re)marry after you father was born, her new married name may be included in your father's wedding cert which is why this is also a useful document to view.
There is no death for your grandmother (using wildcards to pick up of Jean/Jane/Janet etc) with the surnames of McIntosh and Murray, even when you open up the death years for a wider search.
....But, let's take it a stage at a time and see what documents your mother has first that would help you further with the searches :)

she did re marry a Samuel Nixon, not sure when and not sure when he died, so maybe I should be looking for death certificates under the name Nixon?
-
Nothing with a surname Nixon (soundex) and a birth circa 1893 ish from 1961-1965 in Lanarkshire
BUT a Jean Nixon, other names Murray Watt in Old or West Kilpatrick, Dunbartonshire in 1962. This death cert is too recent to view on line and would have to be ordered.
JL
Added - missed her age - she was 68 - so born circa 1894 :)
-
No Nixon/Murray marriage but a Watt/Nixon marriage:
1931 - Glasgow Calton - Samuel Nixon and Jean McIntosh Watt
JL
-
Ah - Jean Mcintosh Watt was aged 36 in Feb 1931 so b. 1994-5 ish
Father was a Charles Watt, shipwright (dec) and Mother was Elizabeth m.s. Murray
JL
-
That is looking really promising JL :)
Redmond, hopefully your father's birth cert will go some way to confirming at least his mother's maiden name. With confirmation of what her maiden name was, this will let you verify that the marriage JL has found to Samuel Nixon in 1931 is the right one.

to Just looking and Monica, I found the birth certificate, shows Jane Murray October 2nd 1893 54 High street dumbarton, Mother Elizabeth Murray. I also found Marriage to Samuel Nixon, her name was listed as Jean McIntosh Watt 1931 married in calton. Not sure where the McIntosh or Watt comes from. Found her death certificate, she was listed as Jean Nixon. She was widowed in 1939. My father changed his name legally from Mcintosh to Nixon in 1958 prior to marrying my mother.
Any additional help with finding who her mother was married to would be greatly appreciated.

As with your father, perhaps your grandmother took on the surname of a later (step?) father. There is a marriage showing on SP in 1895 in Dumbarton for an Elizabeth Murray and a Robert McIntosh that you might want to consider viewing. I think this might be them on the 1901 census:
Robert Mcintosh 39, Coal Man's Labourer b. Edinburgh
Elizabeth Mcintosh 36 b. Dumbarton
Michael Mcintosh 16 b. Dumbarton
Jane Mcintosh 8 b. Dumbarton
Address: 15 Bowie Street, Dumbarton
Not sure about the origins of the Watt name (maybe reputed father :-\)

There is a death in 1931 in Dumbarton for an Elizabeth Murray/Mcintosh born c. 1861 that you might consider viewing also to see who reported the death to try and confirm details.
From the birth cert you now have for the birth of Jean Murray in 1893, the address showed as 54 High Street Dumbarton. The 1891 census has this entry:
Lizzie Murray 29, rope worker
Mary Murray 8
Michael Murray 4
Address: 90 High Street, Dumbarton
Likely both Michael and Jane took on the McIntosh name after their mother's marriage to Robert McIntosh in 1895 (or at least son Michael also showed under McIntosh for that 1901 census entry we have).
There are two possible birth entries for an Elizabeth Murray showing on IGI in Dumbarton, in 1861 and 1862. The best place to confirm her entry and parents' details will be through her marriage and/or death cert which should include their full names.
