Title: ChCh Quake Again 2 (Completed)
Post by: Suzy W on Friday 25 February 11 20:48 GMT (UK)
We have reached 20 pages and now have to start another thread.

Thanks Jan for letting me know about Newbe.  She had it tough last time.  Was she working in Lyttelton when the 6.3 struck on Tuesday?

Even with a few good nights sleep, amazing how tired we are.  Even my 6am boy slept to 8.am this morning.

There was a programme other night looking at what use is sleep...well doesn't need a tv programme to know its VITAL!!

Glad to hear Newbe is OK,  was getting a bit worried.   Thanks for keeping us up to date Suzy and Janette.     If you've had enough of the chaos....catch a flight and come to Perth...plenty of room in my house.....just a pity I live so far away that I can't help someone.

Wild fires in Perth still?
I read in the "That life" magazine the fortune tellers were saying you could get a shake up as well this year.  I was taken aback when I read the other things they said would happen, floods in Queensland, and the magazine was printed two weeks before that happened.
So maybe not a trip to Perth.

Those who love our city dearly have stuck it out, while some flee others stay or come to help.

You are all brave to cope with this sort of tragedy
I suppose you get used the little  shudders that come from time to time but when a big quake like this one comes along you find extra strength and you keep going

take every day as it comes
you are doing well Suzy
like many I wish we could help but we are too far away

Thankfully...it's been quiet lately on the fire front.  It's going to be very hot for the next week or 10 days,  but the fire ratings are low....(high humidity) so that's a good change.

I will be moving in your direction later this year....so sort those earthquakes out Suzy!!     ;)

Maybe some of the R.C's out there can help me.  I have come out in mouth ulcers, it is so hard to eat, drink and talk (much to the relief of my children) Any home remedies?  Should I use a needle to pop the painful one under my tongue?

Well the roads have got very busy, the amount of trucks that have been using the roads is incredible.  Our house tends to shake even more with all the activity, but a job has to be done.

The only thing I can tell you is to rub Toothpaste on your sores
Don't burst the one under your tongue you might get an infection

Try rinsing your mouth with salt water. Rubbing garlic on the sores is supposed to be an old remedy. Do not use a needle to burst them (danger of infection as aspin says).

All sorts of natural remedies here Suzy. I don't know if any of them will work better than others but there is a fair chance you will have some of these ingredients in the house! ;D

Thanks for the great idea. Will get started on them today.

Just been reading the newspaper.  Interesting stories coming out.  The Christchurch gondola (building) was  hit by boulders.  One of the staff members was able to get everyone out just in time, only two American tourist were trapped in the capsule 30 metres up in the air.  The staff were quick on their feet and used ropes to get them down.  Sadly they did not get the names of the poor couple who needed to be saved, they were in such shock they could not talk.

A little 9 month baby was killed when the Television set fell onto him snapping his little neck.  His mother held him for eight hours.  This is one of the most saddest stories of all.

in latest AU WWeekly they have some remedies..including good mouth wash
but they suggested cool tea bags rung out and applied to ulcer..said the tannin in them was good for healing ulcers. Avoid acidic foods until healed.

Anti fungal lozenges if infection/thrush.

Hi Suzy,

A gel called Bongela is a medication for mouth ulcers but if you have Marmite use that - either smear it on or put it on toast and eat.

Hi Spades.  I have Bongela for ulcers and it is not working!  My mouth is very sore, and can not talk very well.  Think the stress of last Tuesday has kicked in.

Aftershocks do not seem that often any more.  It is unlike the Sep 4th, thankfully they are stopping a little quicker, but  a different fell about them, not a jolting shake more like a rolling sea sick feeling.

I hope I never become so familiar with earthquakes that I can describe them with such finesse as you!  ;D 8)

Try the marmite, then.

I'd invite you all up here for a break but us Wellingtonians are a bit worried your quake might have moved the tension up the island - and we KNOW we're living on a faultline. ;)

I don't know if you can get this in NZ or even if you can get to a pharmacy, but Kenalog is wonderful.  Horrible in the mouth, like sandpaper but will get rid of them overnight. It's in dental paste, so it sticks to the ulcer.

Good luck,

Colloidal Silver spray........ it will rid your mouth of ulcers overnight.   My Granddaughter used to get them really bad, the CS spray was recommended by the doctor.   You should be able to pick it up at any chemist or Health Food shop.

Hi there!

Message for MalNZ - I  did post a message for you, but perhaps you did not see it. I asked you if I may email your account of your experiences. I have copied it to my emails, but would not send it without your say so.

I do hope that everyone is managing to cope with what are obviously very difficult conditions. I admire the spirit that all CHCHers have got. You have had to go through so much over the last 6 months, and now you are back to square one and a lot worse!

Take care everyone

Best wishes to you all

Hi all

Never woke to any aftershocks last night, just that pain in my mouth.  I did find going out in the garden and picking some sage to boil up with honey worked very well, it took the pain right down, still have the ulcer under the tongue, but will keep up with the sage mouth wash.  It is meant to be good with nerves and gall bladders as well, so I am on a win win situation here.

Got a email from a distant relation, he said the Mannings are related to my Lyall family.  So the children of Donna Manning share my ggg grand parents, how strange with these connections.  The family are keeping the children out of the media's site, and the police have told them no one could possibly live through the fire and rubble of the CTV building.  Sadly the children have not given up hope on finding their mother alive.

Not sure about taking up home in Wellington!  Of all places that is due for a big shake is Wellington.  I heard a Maori elder saying he saw in a dream about Wellington having a earthquake this coming June, lets hope he is wrong.

Another man who has put the woollies up your jumper is the moon man, he is still saying about another big one down here in March 20th, based around Hamner Springs and will be at least a "8".  If that ever happened it will reach both Wellington and Christchurch.  Lets just hope he is wrong.

Better go get breaky for the family
Suzy W

Apart from that I am not up to date with any other news

Hi Snaptoo and all,

Missed your note in my quick checks of the forum. I am happy for you to forward my remarks. Please remember, they are of one who has been through all the shocks since the big one yet my family is  unscathed apart from the loss of kitchen ware and a window in the big one.  Some friends have lost everything.  Do look at Diana's blog (above), we go back to our student days and she was alone for those few minutes on last Tuesday before her helpers arrived 10 mins later.

The rats are getter rattier. There were two hoax cell-phone calls set up from websites telling the police that the senders were trapped under rubble. I only wish they were and that they could be left there.

Cheers

Just had to get out in the community today.  Took a couple of photo's in my area.
People are still in shock, very pale people including those who have darker complexions.  Not much chatter among people not like last time.
Only way to describe how we feel..like a boxer being knocked down and having to keep getting up, only to be knocked down again.

First photo is of the Baptist church on Harewood Road
Second photo is only just a few doors down from the church on the corner of Harewood Road and Papanui Road, this was damaged in the first quake, but was holding on for it's 100th Birthday this year, now a pile of rubble

Sucking a potassium chloride tablet helps with mouth ulcers.  Horrible taste though!
Also, make sure your bodily functions at the other end are regular, as this is often a cause of mouth ulcers, if you get 'stuffed up'

Suzy, Just another idea for you - I have to take prescribed Folic Acid tablets to prevent mouth ulcers - the ulcers being a side effect of one of the drugs that I take for Rheumatoid Arthritis - the drug affects my liver. As one of the other posters said - immune system stuff!

Also, just very relieved, managed to finally make contact with my friend in Christchurch. She and her husband OK, and house OK, Went out to Temuka yesterday to her son, who is part of the Search team with the Fire Service. She's very shaken up of course.  She and a friend were in town at the Casino for lunch on the day, and on the way down after lunch stopped to play the pokies.  The friend was winning and my friend was losing, so she said it didn't really matter than the winnings just "flew away somewhere"!  ;D  She was able to joke about it, so that was good!

They got out OK, but had to walk home to Avonside - took her about three hours. Her car is still buried in the basement, but she's sooo thankful that she and her family are OK, she doesn't really care about the car!

Anyway, good that you getting out and about, and I guess your "feeling like a boxer" describes it pretty well!  Take Care :)

I know how my poor mother felt now, she also had extremely bad arthritis and suffered with mouth and throat ulcers.  lost so much weight for not being able to eat.  It just brings it all home and a better understanding of others who suffer from these things.

4677 aftershocks since September 4th, no wonder we are still standing :o

Christchurch has put on a great pre - Autumn day, and lets hope that gives people a little bit more strength to carry on.

Have not bothered with T.V or radio today, just need to have a rest from the media, So sorry can not up date anyone on what is going on out there.

:) You're a real trooper Suzy!!  I'm pleased that you're able to take a step back and a break from the media, on this lovely day - (it's great in Wellington today too).   Sure that will give you some space to just "be", if you know what I mean

.  I haven't turned any TV or radio on today either, but like you, doesn't mean I don't care!  Had a couple of quick peeps into Stuff, I can take things at my own pace there!  And I had a potter in the garden!  You take care and take it easy!

Hope your mouth is improving Suzy, stress hits us all in different ways.

Our household is sleeping very badly and feeling very nervous about being in Heathcote.

We went there today, to pick up our valuables/sentimental things and clean out the fridge/freezer. Hell that stunk after only 5 days without power.

Only about 10% of the street are sleeping there...........all are feeling a little freaked about the rocks behind:( Power on yesterday but no water as yet.

I'd say 75% of houses there are munted (my new NZ word ;D) Media seems to be overlooking us though.

The Rangoira Earthquake Express is cooking up a storm and feeding New Brighton ;)
If you would like to donate to something a donation to them would be great.

Cheers

Annie   ;D ... I was quite amused by the use of the word 'munted' on a news item the first day, since then I've heard it used quite a lot when they've been interviewing on the terrible destruction there ... It has been a well used description in our circle for yonks, just hadn't heard it used so much on the tele ... For outsiders, there are a couple of meanings, generally urban slang for wrecked, useless, ruined ...

... I have been continuing to follow all reports, so sad we haven't had any more miracles since Wednesday  :(

... there was a warning tonight that even for adults, though especially for the children, the wall to wall media coverage being viewed constantly could be overload ... so you're doing the right thing switching off when and if you can ....

... yes so sickening!! ....  :-\ we did wonder if it could have been someone connected with actual trapped persons, wanting rescuers to resume search of an area which at one point it was announced that it could be futile and search and recovery moving to another area, that's been an extremely generous thought of course!! ... Thankfully the stories of brilliant kinfolk far outweigh the scumbags!!

... something I forgot to mention and locals may have missed... heard on radio Sunday morning, the Star and Herald were collaborating to put out a free publication for Cantabrians. Available at service stations, supermarkets, The Warehouse etc... :-\ understood it was a Sunday paper. Possibly mostly photos and personal stories, perhaps some general advice .... there are numerous people without power who have no idea yet what other parts of their area look like, isolated from media. Think NZ Post are going to attempt part of  mail delivery Tuesday ...

Hi SH... sometimes I hardly stir at husband's alarm at 5am, usually get a cuppa before he leaves by 6 though ... and it's now  6.20...

... usually first errand is to fetch the paper for father-in-law, done that and as per the other days since Tuesday it's full of earthquake related pictures and effects ... still terribly hard to comprehend just the same! l

... re the mail, believe they will attempt areas that have been passed as cleared to enter and then arrange a pick-up point for undeliverable mail.

... Monday morning, far from a normal one for Canterbury ... even the mayor, who has been a great communicator in the media, has said he's not sure what day/ time it is, a few days ago his watch was still under rubble in his own home ..

Hi Mare!

Never seen you about as early as 5.34am before!

I have seen the mayor on many occasions on the news reports, and I agree that he is a great communicator! I am not surprised that he has lost all sense of time. I think that he needs some 'Me time', but what chance is there of that happening ???

My heart just goes out to everyone in CHCH. I have many happy memories of my time in that beautiful city, including climbing that spiral staircase in the cathedral spire, even if it was a wet day!

Hi Annie, glad to hear you are safe and well, and away from your area.

The suburbs are the last place for help, but that is understandable with the death's in the city.  If people are alive and are moaning they are alright for while.  (That is what I learn't in first aid)

May I add a little on our dear Christ-Church Cathedral Minister, Dean Peter Beck.
Peter has held it together for a number of days, he has been a rock for all his people of Christchurch.
Yesterday the dear man broke down and cried after a group of other Church ministers came to do a prayer over the Cathedral, especially when the Maori people started to pray in the native language. (It brings chills down your body)
This was a moving scene, but very little shown on T.V.
May he find the strength to carry on and lead Canterbury into a new and better Christchurch.

Amazing how many people have left Christchurch.  My sister is planning on going down to Queenstown in March.  As I said our family have lived here for 160 years, this is our home, I am here to see it re-built and my children grow into adults here.  I am not turning my back on Christchurch, but will protect my family when needed.

What brave words Suzy
You hang out there if not for you but as you say for your Children

When we were in the Cathedral in December there was a young priest with the mothers and the children
It looked like they were from a nursery as the children were very small .So has the Cathedral more than one priest

we also noticed that there were workmen at the back of the church doing repairs
I take it this was from the Sep Quake

Stay strong

Thank you Janette
He's not there but then he could have been from another church

I remember thinking he looked very young to be a priest of a Cathedral

He's on my DVD but not my photo's talking to the little ones
My husband is sure we saw one of the ladies from the Cathedral shop on TV the other night

I bought an angel for the Christmas tree and we think she served me .As it was so near to Christmas when we got back I put this little angel on the top of the tree as I couldn't find our big one
so strange

... saw a touch of that last night Suzy with the Dean, and they replayed the bit when he was up in the chopper surveying the scene the day after the quake where he said he hadn't cried yet but that it would have to happen.  He certainly was worrying more for the people than the building, sad as it is that such a magnificent landmark building has collapsed but of course tragic that tourists where visiting the steeple  :'(

A couple of strong aftershocks this morning 2 over 4, a 4.3 at 10.35 and first one I've seen on the pages outside of Chch for a few days, a 4.1 White Island albeit deeper ...

Very strong aftershocks this morning.  The 4.3 thankfully happened after my food shopping.  I was sitting outside with my cup of coffee enjoying the sun.

I was told by a geologist that the fault line should be going West to East, and hopefully should move more out to sea in the coming weeks/months.  Which it does seem to be doing.

Ulcer getting much better, still there, but was able to have a little food this morning without too much pain.

Will be getting the children doing their school work today. No computers today.

My son is meant to be at camp tomorrow in Akaora.  No way is that happening now.

Schools are still closed for most of this week as far as I know.  Our local schools are fine.

I phoned another friend who's daughter was at camp when it happened, the children were terrified by the time they got home at 10.30pm.  They had to drive over broken roads avoiding rock falls.  Plus the driver said to the parents the children may of seen more than what they should of, so I am not certain what he means by that.  But a few little minds will be on tender hooks for some time.

So glad you're able to keep us "up to speed" on the situation over there - I've virtually given up watching the news reports here as what we're hearing/seeing is more sporadic now and I think they're straying into the sensationalist realm a lot of the time (although not as badly as they could have done).

Just curious, as we used to have friends there (now moved to Wellington), ... any idea how things are in Rolleston?  They had a lovely big house there ... 't'would be sad to think it was damaged, it had been in the family for years.

Rolleston was one of the places that was hit constantly by after shocks from the September quake.  Now it is Lyttelton and Akaroa's turn.

Very hot here today, it has it's good points and bad.  Not long before things start to get cooler, and when it does we will all know about it.

Aspin, yes my Lyall clan came from Dundee, William Lyall married Mary Milne in 1850 Jamesfield by Abernethy.  They were one of the first settlers in Pigeon Bay (not far from Lyttelton) They farmed a very large property until the early 1900's.

We also have very strong links with Rangiora, my Watkins and Pentecost families were one of the first settlers in this area.  So you can understand why I am so protective of Christchurch.

Radio and T.V have been switched off again today.  Not good for children to watch, plus they need to have a normal day as possible.

A great fear of tilt a slab concrete buildings might happen (Tilt City).  Lets hope there are architect's out there who have a creative flair.
No good moving the city centre, all of New Zealand sits on a fault line.  Now the liquefaction has happened it makes the ground solid.    There are machines that can shake lose soil to make hard before building on. This was used in Pegasus which is sitting pretty at the moment.

It is good to see that Red Cross in UK now has an appeal for donations to NZEarthquake.  I suspect they will get a good response from us.

I know many of my overseas's contacts have donated to the "Red Cross"  Please if anyone is giving money make sure it is a official org.  Never give to anyone phoning and asking for money, double check web sites, and make sure you get a receipt.  Sadly there are low life out there who take advantage of these situations.

Today marks one week.  We have a national two min silence at 12.51pm.

Did any of the NZ RC'S watch Campbell Live last night?  I was totally mad and thought Campbell was a real pratt not allowing the "moon man" say his thoughts on March 20th coming,  If this man is right and we will get another big shake up, are we not best to be prepared than go through it all again?
My sister has watched Ken Rings site since September and all his mapping of the moon and tides along with large aftershocks have came true.
I keep a open mind, will not panic, but will keep my emergency supplies stocked.

Yes, I thought John Campbell was being rude too - he constantly talked over him and yet didn't do that to the scientists.  Why invite him on if you don't want to listen to him?  Maybe John is getting tired from odd hours and being away from home down there, but still....

I could understand what JOhn  Campbell was trying to do, but he is an interviewer and with his experience he should have been able to interview Mr Ring in a balanced and fair manner.

If its true sure it would be great to plan for, sadly I was listening to ZB yet again all night and the information is frighterning to many..I guess thats the danger that John Campbell was warning against.

It makes sense but if it wa that easy surely the scientists would have clicked on to it

Post by: Suzy W on Monday 28 February 11 19:36 GMT (UK)
If John Campbell allowed Ken Ring to say his piece, he would of said that there was a strong possibility of another quake come March 20th between Hamner Springs and Amberley.  It will be a strong quake up to a "8" but could not tell if it was very deep in the ground.

If this happened it would effect Wellington and most of the South Island and would just finish of already damaged buildings in Christchurch.

Ken Ring also said there is risk of any small shake come this Saturday.  Another thing he noted for April was floods in  for Christchurch, as our water table is lying low now.  But after April all should come right with the moon finally moving away from the earth.

I know John was trying protect the people of Christchurch from anymore scare.  As sixty thousand people have left already.  But if there is some inch of truth in Ken's mapping of the moon, we should be prepared.

If he had just let him have his say then ask him his accuracy rate and then asked the scientists their view people could make up their own minds.

But it was odd, like inviting on one of the psychics from Sensing Murder and then just talking over them while they tried to speak and then having the President of the Sceptic Society and let them have free reign - not very balanced.

If you are not interested in letting him speak, why invite him on?

Anyway, thinking of you down there in Shaky Town xXx

Just had a 4.3.  Honestly my heart leaped out of my chest for that one.

I think it is so sad seeing so many people leaving.  We live close to the airport, and the last few days has just been plane after plane going out.  More like the blitz of London when children had to leave, some never to return.

Christchurch needs it's locals to come back when things settle, sadly many are saying that is it.  The Wizard of Christchurch had second thoughts and has returned.

As for John Campbell, he was more upsetting than seeing the ruins on T.V.  We do not need people acting in such a manner.  He clearly showed signs of not coping with our aftershocks and bit like a savage dog.
I could go on t.v a say my mouth gets very dry before a quake over "5" and I did a week beforehand, would he ask if I went to Uni for that qualification?

Just a little about the time capsules Kiwi girl mentioned.

Two time capsules have been discovered underneath a statue damaged in the quake, as the nation prepares to mark one week since the tragedy struck.

The time capsules were discovered in Cathedral Square under the plinth of a statute of John Robert Godley, which was damaged in the quake. One was a small glass capsule while the other was a large metal-like object.

The discovery, described by Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker as "remarkable",

The capsules will be opened in the future, but would be looked after at the city museum in the meantime.

Parker said he hoped to "discover and understand the words and visions of our forebears" in the capsules.

Irishman John Robert Godley is known as the "Founder of Canterbury" even though he lived there for only two-and-a-half years. He travelled in Ireland and North America and developed ideas about how colonies should be established and governed.

The statue will be rebuilt, Parker said.

Regarding the predictions of further quakes on specific days and of floods by a certain individual I would direct those concerned by such statements to this webpage:

http://www.sillybeliefs.com/ring.html#heading-1c

Science does not supports 'predictions' made by this individual. Under the present circumstances such utterances are irresponsible and little more than fear-mongering. Yes, there may be more earthquakes (suggested by previous experience and knowledge of tectonic plate movement) and/or flooding, but a good dollop of common sense tells us that is likely anyway.

Even if this prognosticator's 'prediction' occurs I for one would put it down to nothing more than coincidence. One reason such people get a voice is that people remember the 'hits' and forget the 'misses'. It's nothing more than a scam, just like those who use 'cold reading' techniques and statistical probability theory to make people believe that they can 'talk to the dead'.

Please be very skeptical of such people. Did he accurately predict the quake of last week? If so, why didn't he warn everyone, saving many deaths and injuries. Put his detailed 'predictions' on the fridge and wait to see what happens.

My best wishes to all of you in Christchurch. It's terrifying enough now, we know; but don't let anyone make you afraid of shadows.

Thanks spades for posting the 'silly beliefs ' link, I was reading through it this morning.
While I personally hold no credence to Mr Rings predictions, I think if people do then perhaps they will be prepared with a survival kit, fresh water etc which could be a help in the future as the aftershocks are surely set to continue for many months to come. The more people that have provisions the better, even if they never have to use them.
Just my two cents worth.

Hi Spades
Yes Ken Ring did give those dates between 18-25th of Feb for more earth movement.

As I was told by a geologist the fault line is running from West to East and we were meant to of had a aftershock of 6.1, well this shake was East and was a 6.3.  Hopefully the fault is moving more out to sea.

I am sticking it out in Christchurch.  I can see how Ken Ring would frighten people, but always best to be safe than sorry.

Gastro bug going around anyway.  Phoned the G.P nurse, she said no one has come down with water related gastro bugs as yet, so more likely I picked up a bug from another person.

I had no idea about the time capsule, how exciting, I wonder if any relations placed anything in it?

Leandra, I also inquired about Newbe, think she is without phone etc in Avonside, that is why she is not on here.

I'm fascinated by the time capsules in the plinth....anyone around here able to find out when the plinth was erected?  Perhaps for an anniversary of the founding of Christchurch?  Who paid for it?  ie who is likely to have written the notes?  Can the age of the solder-sealed metal container be determined from historic information about the use of such elements?  Another magical mystery in the making?!  ;)

The Colombo Extract is described thus:

It hath an aromatic smell, but is disagreeably bitter, and slightly pungent to the taste; is supposed to be almost a specific in the cholera morbus, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, bilious fever, indigestion, and most other disorders of the stomach and bowels. It is slightly sedative, corroborant, and antiseptic. The bark resists the putrefaction of animal flesh; and the root exceeds it in preserving the bile from putridity, or in correcting the putrescency which has already commenced. As it is not heating, it may be used in hectic fevers. A tincture of this root in brandy is a very useful remedy for moderating the retchings during the first months of pregnancy. Dr. Cullen says it is a strong and agreeable bitter, and he has employed it in many instances of dyspepsia with great advantage. In checking vomiting it has frequently succeeded; but he has found it to fail even where there seemed to be a redundancy of bile; nor, in correcting the acrimony and putrescency of the bile, has it appeared more powerful than other bitters.

1918 was the glass bottle!!!

Colonist, Volume LX, Issue 14663, 18 March 1918, page 3

"The statue of John Robert Godley, which, for 50 years stood, in the centre of Cathedral Square, Christchurch, has been placed in position in its new site on the northern grass plot of the Cathedral grounds. There was a small gathering to witness the ceremony of cementing the statue on its base. Before the statue was lowered into its bed of cement, a bottle was inserted in a small hollow under the statue. The bottle contained a parchment bearing the following statement in Indian ink "This statue of John Robert Godley, executed by Thomas Woolner, R.A., was erected in the west side of Cathedral Square by the Provincial Government of Canterbury, and unveiled by the late Sir Charles Christopher Bowen, K.C.M.G., on August 6, 1867. It was moved to this site in March, 1918."   The statement was signed  by the Anglican Bishop of Christchurch, the (Mr H. Holland); the Town Clerk, and the City Surveyor."

Just catching up, I have been out of action due to my satellite being out, affected by the quake.

Two nights ago, I had a pleasant surprise while watching tv, one of the places in OZ was mentioned in raising money for Christchurch, they were interviewing someone, the name seemed familar, then it clicked it was one of the names in my tree.  They were ex-kiwi.  Must admit it was nice to seem them in the flesh instead of a photo.

One of our neighbours, their niece worked for the CTV, they were trying to make contact with her for six hours and were getting worried when no reply.  Turned out she was out in the field doing interviews.

Being that there was no mention of the metal cylinder in 1918 one would then deduce it was put in, in 1933.  Paperspast does not go up to 1933 though to double check  :(

Further to last nights one sided interview on Campbell Live. he started of his program with an apology for his unprofessional performance, he had spoken personally to Ken Ring and apologised. He also offered him the opportunity to come back again and give his story, needless to say he refused.

Some years ago I was watching and interview on TV1 with Dennis Connor by Paul Holmes. Denis quite rightly walked out and I shifted to watching TV3 news and have never intentionally watched TV One news since then. I now feel I must move on to Prime and take in their news, I have lost all faith in Campbell, as a news reporter he has lost all integrity.

Maybe some of the R.C's out there can help me.  I have come out in mouth ulcers, it is so hard to eat, drink and talk (much to the relief of my children)

Suzy W

Suzy, I am the queen of mouth ulcers, was for 10 years, when I came back from my OE.   I was given every available prescription there was for them, nothing worked.   Found a good one when I was in Rarotonga years ago, but dr would not prescribe it here.   I haven't had a bad attack for years, get the odd one or three at the same time.

Keep drinking as I found that helped, cause it sure does hurt when mouth is dry.    One thing lately I have found helps is apple cider vinegar in water, swill your mouth out with it.

That's from the BBC and that had this to add:

There were several times when the objects could have been placed inside the plinth - when Godley's statue was erected in 1867, moved in 1918, or returned to its original site in 1933, reported The Press.
The fallen statue of John Robert Godley in Cathedral Square, Christchurch, on Tuesday The items were found in the large plinth of the statue of Christchurch founder John Robert Godley

Mayor Parker suggested the capsules could contain documents which gave an insight into the "vision" of the settlers.

"It seems almost providential that they have come to light now to provide the inspiration we need in this most difficult time," he was quoted as saying.

... There are also reports that a third mysterious item has been found in the ruins of the cathedral - this time in the cross of the spire, which was toppled by the quake - but these remain unconfirmed.

Reporting in from Wellington   ....

It was a short, sharp, jolt of about 10 seconds duration ... the "jolty" ones are always the most scary.   ::)

Listening in to radio talkback, there are no reports of damage.   :)

It's a blustery old night here in the Capital and the upper storey of our home always creaks, groans, and shudders in such conditions so you sort of get used to a bit of "rock 'n roll".   But just as that jolt struck, the wind rather spookily stopped ... and there was a strange silence.   Really quite creepy.

My thoughts and prayers though, are still very much with the incredibly brave folk of Christchurch.   :-*

Just to reassure you - I live in Wellington area and didn't notice the earthquake tonight! I usually always feel the slightest little tremor!   I live about 20k North of Wellington City.   And being a life time resident of Wellington I'm extra sensitive and petrified of them too!

Just took this info from the Geonet site  -   www.geonet.org.nz    -   interesting  but not for would be immigrants to look at though ;D ;D

Reference Number: 3472164
NZDT: Tue, Mar 1 2011 10:07 pm
Magnitude: 4.5
Depth: 40 km
Details: 20 km north-west of Wellington

Tephra, as you probably know, Karori is a suburb of Wellington City, so your Aunt is even further away from the earthquake than I am and I'm sure she will be fine. .

If you are still online and would like to PM me with the name of the Rest Home, her name, and your name,  I will be more happy to call them right now for you.   Night staff will be on duty, and I'm sure it will be OK to ring now and I'd like to be able to put your mind at rest - straight from the horse's mouth!

Jeanne :) Modified at 1.10am to add  - "see you've gone offline now, but still PM me and I'll check it out in the morning for you."

:( I'm sitting here feeling really guilty! I was lying in bed - couldn't sleep for worrying about the Wellington earthquake that I didn't even feel, (no damage reported), and waiting for the next one! Now I've got up and I'm thinking about the people of Christchurch who have had 8 aftershocks today (Tuesday) ranging in magnitude from 3.1 - 4.6.  The 4.6 was at 10.42pm, centred in Lyttelton again, and just 35 minutes after the Wellington one.  What right have I got to be fretting about this little jolt in Wellington - not that they're unheard of up here!!  But it didn't do anything, did it!!

I can still hardly comprehend that all this is what these amazing incredible people of Christchurch and the Rescue workers & teams etc who are all working so hard, are living with day after day after day! And in such difficult conditions of loss and deprivation!!

I just don't know how to put into words the admiration and compassion that I continue to feel for every single one of them right now!  Like a lot of other people I guess, I'm wishing and hoping for some respite and peace, love, miracles and magic wands for them all.  Stay Safe Christchurch!

All part of everyday life since September 4th Jaybelnz.  We never jump to anything under "4.5"  and most are 2-6km deep which are very close.  Even the ones that wake us at night, we just stay in bed and ride it out.  Probably one of the safe places to be.

If Wellington ever had one, and you are in the city, never run out where a wall can come down on top of you.  I know it is human nature to run, but take cover under something strong.
As I said to my children it is not the earthquake that kills you it is the falling buildings.

Apple cider vinegar, yes I have heard that is so good for a number of things.  But I found using fresh sage out of the garden and honey, pour hot water over and let rest for 10 minutes.  Use as a mouth wash or you can drink it for nerves.  Ulcers much better, plus taking multi v's which have zinc in it.

The old adage "it never rains but it pours" seems very apt.

Hope things settle down for everyone very soon.    These shocks can't be helping the rescue teams very much, they can't leave the area after all.

One comment I must make regarding science and predictions.
Some very long-gone well revered persons in the works of science etc were, in their time, ridiculed or called charlatans.
So....   what tales will future generations tell?

Hope your mouth is improving Suzy.  Wouldn't like to try some of those cures :P

Hi folk,

I am safe and well. We just had power come back on yesterday and still no water or toilet facilities. I am off to stay with a friend in Hamilton tomorrow for about 2 weeks I think but could be longer. I may stay in Auckland as well with my cousin in Onehunga after the 14 march. My job is no more as building came down. So will have to look for another one when I come back.

Hi All,

some amazing satellite pictures.

http://www.abc.net.au/news/infographics/christchurch-quake/beforeafter.htm

The fourth picture of the set shows Colombo Street (vertical) and Tuam Street (L-R) junction.  I believe the buses in the rubble (centre)  are yet to be uncovered and the dead removed.

A friend of ours was in a shop only metres away in Tuam Street.  The whole wall and entrance collapsed into the street and when the shaking stopped she stumbled out over the pile of bricks into the street - totally distraught yet unharmed. Her purse with a considerable amount of cash and jewelry was left behind. Her husband wheedled (probably the wrong word as he is over six foot) with someone  soon after the quake and, quite illegally as it was after the emergency was declared, managed to get the purse and save their bank balance!

Our "refugees" have had interesting encounters with the police and others when claiming their property in damaged but not red-carded buildings.  At the cordon to the CBD some road guards are very compassionate and allow entry with proper identification, others don't. You just drive from one checkpoint to the next until a compassionate one is found. Once inside the boundary other questions may follow from itinerant police etc..  However, on Sunday, no entry could be gained and they had to walk some distance to their apartments and then carry or drag their belongings along the broken paths.  They had to hand over their driver's licenses to the police so all could be checked both in and out of the restricted zone.  But when walking back with their bags some official asked why they had not driven to their apartments!  But Wednesday was the horror.  They were given ten minutes warning that the squad that checked for bodies in all buildings was arriving and if the door keys were not available the door would be smashed in exposing personal property to any thieving rat who are still around.  One apartment was jemmied open even after a neighbour stated that  no body was in the apartment - its owner was away working as a helper at one of the rescue stations.  Apparently complaints were made and now a locksmith accompanies the "dead bodies squad".

Another friend spent the first four days as a volunteer helper in a rescue station in a suburb well outside the damaged areas and which still has water, sewer and power.  She was appalled at the number of local "bludgers"  getting free meals.

Cheers

MalNZ

I was just wondering how you are managing regarding any shred of normality?  Are the supermarkets up and running and are supplies of food & consumables getting through? Are people back at work - say in the banks or retails shops?
Any news of the kids getting back to school?

Hi Newbe

We are in the safe zone North West area.  Just a few more hair line cracks, nothing to complain about.
A little stressed tonight, seeing how many people are leaving and the "moon man" and saying about the 20th for another good shake up.  Thinking on where to go for that weekend or stay?  I have children to think about.

My mouth has been dry again today, always get this before something over "5"

Very snappy toward everyone tonight, so they have left me to my own space.
Just tried and grumpy.

No school until next week.  Supermarkets open only in suburbs

Another set back with the aftershocks last night.  Schools have to be checked again!  So our wonderful headmaster has started a online school, what a brilliant idea. ;D  Now is trying to get my 10 year old to do it >:(

My poor garden is suffering with the lack of water, and these hot days just are not helping.  I had to water the vegetable patch yesterday, I still have food we are eating out of there.

Si and Garry are back on the radio, both men lost their homes in the quake, real troopers coming back.  And so good to hear familiar voices along with their jokes and banter.

Sounds as if they pulled out a number of bodies last night, and made good work on recovering bodies in the Cathedral.

The funeral directors are having a very busy time, and by the sounds of things a number of them have had deaths in their own families.  They are having a bad time dealing with the state of the bodies and their own grief.  They need a pat on the back for their work in such times.

Just reading our local rag, a couple of youngsters are staying with relatives out near us, and attending a small rural school, which they say, they are loving, as it isn't so cramped as a large school.   It usually took them 2 hours a day with changing buses etc to get to their normal school and now only have five minutes walk. :D

Our local market gardeners have also donated a lot of vegetables.

Hi KHP
2 hours to get to school?  I question this.  Unless they were private schooling or came from out of town like Rangiora.
Takes about 4 minutes for my daughter to walk to school and 5 minutes for my son to scooter to his.  If people sent their children to local schools it makes life much easier.

Child free today, daughter has gone to friends place, and son had blown his gasket (pre teen) so hubby came and took him to work before I killed the little beggar.
Anyone would like to take a 12 year old boy on for the next 10 years?

Hi Suzy,

I am only going by what is quoted in the local rag.  One attended Burnside School and the other Christchurch Boys School. Quote "They would usually spend at least 2 hours a day taking four buses to and from school" Quote.  Didn't state where they lived.   The kids were glad they only had one lunch line to deal with instead as opposed to 28.  It took the boy 2 hours to walk home on the day of the Earthquake.

Burnside is a big school, over 2000 students.  I hated my time there many moons ago.

Just got off the phone to my dear Aunt who lives in one of the worst hit areas.  She is in her mid eighties, The area just got some water put back on yesterday, so she was busy washing sheets before it gets cut off again.
She also said the food parcels were coming to her door, which she has shared with her son who is terminal with cancer.

She was saying how a group of men came to her son's place and painted the outside of the house in one weekend (this is after the first quake)  so nice to hear of community spirit in such a way.

Her son has been trying to fix things around her place, even being very weak and tired himself, he is still making sure his mother is alright.  The other part of the family have also stepped in to help.

I have offered any help that is needed, if roads are open to get there, I will get there.

There is a dog that has been barking non stop all day today.  It is driving me silly, my nerves are shot as it is.  Have not seen any pets wondering around, but cats are the experts on hiding, our cat took off for a number of hours, came back with his tummy rubbled

Had a aftershock before, and my heart leaped out, I have been quite sensitive towards every little rattle the last couple of days.  I am sure many people are the same.  Something I never do, a little Baileys in milk, helped a little.

Just been speaking to a friend who is a nurse at ChCh hospital.  A number of nurses have handed in their job, the building is unnerving, so to think if you go in there with heart problems, you maybe worse off.

I have been trying to talk to as many people as possible, it is best to unload your thoughts and share with others.

Apparently a seagull was found in the rubble of the cathedral.  It had trouble drinking, not sure what happened to it.

I have been busy looking for a holiday home down South for 18-22 March, do you think anything is available?  Plus the prices range from $150 up per night.  I think most of Christchurch is heading out of town that weekend.

Timaru has grown by 20%, this may be the new Christchurch ;D

May I recommend a jaunt to Oamaru?  Home to Oamaru Stone and Steam Punk?  Ancestral home of my Lane family of Lane's emulsion fame...  Maybe time to bring it back to help 'Forge a shield of Vital Strength'  though I don't think it tasted very nice...

So sunny Oamaru?  as an alternative to Timaru - same ending - more fun?  ;)

Hi ALL,

A CRY FROM THE HEART OF A DISTANT RELATIVE

MalNZ

Christchurch Quake -- More action needed in Eastern Suburbs RIGHT NOW

It's 2am and, like many people in Christchurch, I am not sleeping too well just now. But at least we now have power, so I can use the time productively.

My personal history of the past week will have to wait. It may be interesting to some, but it's not important right now.

What's important is what is is NOT happening adequately in the acute post-quake period, because the official response is dwarfed by the size of the problem.

HUGE CAVEAT: I don't have all-seeing eyes, or a helicopter. I certainly don't have any kind of special "in" with officialdom and their view of the situation -- though not for want of trying to make contact in the past five days. So this is based on my perspective locally in the south-east, and from several drives into the middle- east, south and north-west of the city.

Here we go:

There are THREE cities in Christchurch right now, not one.

RESCUE CITY is inside the four main avenues, and it is cordoned off. That means almost all our knowledge of it comes from media, and man is it a honey-pot for them!

It's given us understandably-incessant tales and images of injury, tragedy, loss, broken iconic buildings, heroism, sacrifice, leadership and gratifying international response. It's extremely
television-friendly.

My quake experience started there, but actually almost nobody lives in Rescue City. The resources and attention which are seemingly being poured into it right now are NOT addressing the most urgent post-quake needs of the population of Christchurch.

Title: Re: ChCh Quake Again 2
Post by: MalNZ on Thursday 03 March 11 07:38 GMT (UK)
PART 2

SHOWER CITY is any part of Christchurch where you can take a hot shower, because you have electricity and running water and mostly-working sewer lines. By latest estimates, that's about 65% of the city -- much of it out west.

In that part of Christchurch, tired people are getting on with life --  though some may be wondering if they still have a job. And a few of them with energy and time to spare are wondering if they can do more to help the rest of the city.

The media naturally lives in Shower City, and they talk almost exclusively to the business leaders and the Rescue City leadership who also inhabit it.

REFUGEE CITY is the rest of Christchurch -- mainly the eastern suburbs, though there are pockets elsewhere. It includes perhaps 50,000 to 100,000 people, though a more-mobile chunk of them may have self-evacuated by now.

Only half of those who remain in Refugee City have power, and almost NONE have running water. Many have been living on their own resources, and their neighbours', for over a week now.

That means that batteries have run down, gas (if they had any to start with) has run out, other supplies are low or gone. Roads are often very bad - and a lot of those from the poorer suburbs have no transport anyway.

Their houses may or may not be intact. Their streets may be clear, broken, or full of silt. Or sewage. There are no showers. Or ways to wash clothes. Or to wash dishes. Or to heat the "must boil" water
that is available --  assuming they can make it to the nearest water truck, day after day. No refrigeration. No working toilets, and precious few portaloos.

No internet either, and often no phones. And their radio batteries are dead or dying. The papers - if you can get one - are rapidly dated, and usually far too general in their coverage. It really doesn't help someone without a car in Aranui to know that Fisher and Paykel are providing free laundries in Kaiapoi!

All the above means the locals have few resources, little information, and no "voice" either. It's remarkably hard to call talkback radio - or your local politician - or emergency services -
when your landline is out and your cellphone battery is dead. Or when it maybe has JUST enough charge to stay on hold for 5 minutes - but not 20! - when calling the sole government helpline.

The media flies over, drives past and dips into Refugee City, usually at the main welfare or water points. But they don't cover it that much. From my observations, the officials - those who are making
decisions about the relief effort - seem to do likewise. (We saw Opposition Leader Phil Goff the other day - he stopped for a photo op with the Army group who had paused briefly at the cordon.
Not that he or they talked to any of the locals waiting amidst they dust they'd stirred up, hoping for a nugget of information.)

Judging from the media coverage to date, the official response in this part of the city sounds reassuring - "Relief Centres" (if you can get to them -- and if it hasn't been relocated to Rangiora), a
field hospital (ditto), Army (two drive-bys in the past week), "Operation Suburbs" teams (ditto; and this whole area is not even listed with them), increased police presence thanks to 300 loaned
Australians (some sign of them, but not enough). And some worthy and welcome images of food and other supplies being distributed at marae and other central points.

IN THESE POWERLESS SUBURBS, THE OFFICIAL RESPONSE IS FAR FROM ENOUGH.
Especially in terms of the fundamentals.

I come from a relatively well-off area - most of its folk were better prepared than average for something like this - good supplies of food, water, batteries, BBQs and the like.

But even here, by the weekend, many people were bailing -- mainly because of lack of information about how to survive here any longer. Their only contact with officialdom was being pushed from pillar to post by often-unnecessary (and though they didn't know it at the time, temporary) evacuations, conducted by police who were doing their best, but who themselves were overworked and under-informed.
Such actions considerably eroded local confidence, especially when there was also no clear information about when power or water would return locally.

My family's local response to that situation can be seen at http://webcentre.co.nz/quake.htm - NOT the web page itself, but the physical noticeboard and printed newsletters and, especially, the
local volunteers and extensive human contact and moral support which it represents.

Basically, we started making stone soup, and our neighbours and fellow citizens contributed the other ingredients. And for this suburb -- though not for everyone in it -- the acute phase has now
passed, because more than half of us at least have electricity now. THANK YOU ORION.

But all that was ONLY possible because our family had the personal security, skills, communication equipment, stationery (pens, paper, cards, bulldog clips, noticeboard), chutzpah and, above all,
electricity -- "borrowed" from a cellsite generator -- to make it happen. And also a couple of family members outside the city willing to be gofers for information and key supplies.

Title: Re: ChCh Quake Again 2
Post by: MalNZ on Thursday 03 March 11 07:39 GMT (UK)
PART 3
HOW MANY PEOPLE IN THE EASTERN SUBURBS HAVE ALL THAT?

You might think that there are Civil Defence or Red Cross or Army people who are doing all this as part of their role -- helping people to stay in their homes by providing the essential information and
(where necessary) key supplies they need to do it safely. My direct observations over the past week suggests otherwise - especially away from officialdom's chosen central points. They are simply overwhelmed by the nature and extent of the crisis, and tired and understaffed to boot!

So this is a call to action.

== If you are local:

* FIND OUT WHERE THERE IS STILL NO WATER and (especially) NO POWER. These are places where the acute post-earthquake phase is still happening, right now, and will go on happening until they have those services. Where people are under the most stress, and where the risk of gastro-related illness and other major problems is inevitably going to be the highest.

* Take them batteries, clean drinking water, bulk washing water, bottled drinks, milk, camp-stove gas cartridges, face masks, transistor radios, alcohol hand cleaners, wet wipes, fresh fruit, dry
and canned food (not frozen -- unless you plan to hand it directly to someone at their house. If you ARE going to do that, take bags of ice too).

* Ignore the few main distribution centres - people who can get there easily WILL get help, as will those with good transport of their own - - provided they have cash to spare. Instead, look for smaller water points or obvious drop-off/drop-in sites. I can't help you find these, and nor can "officialdom" -- just drive to an affected area with a carload, and ask some locals. If there's one happening already, they will know! And even if you end up putting it on an obvious street corner with a "please take one" sign, it would do
Good.

* Rinse and repeat. Until all these suburbs have (especially) power and reliable transport, the need will NOT go away.

== If you live further afield:

It gets trickier. I have personally met people who drove from Timaru, Oamaru, Akaroa and the West Coast with supplies, and boy were they welcome! But in my view, the best thing to do is to find someone local who you know and trust, and who is willing to act, and send them money so they can do the above. Their time + your money = immediate help.

If you are thinking along normal lines, you'll feel that the best thing to do is to donate to a government appeal, or the Red Cross, or the Salvation Army. Know that they are focused on the most needy cases, but they are far from omniscient. And their efforts are noticeably understaffed (and their staff are getting weary too - they often live in the same suburbs that most need help).

Help them with donations by all means  (http://www.redcross.org.nz - every dollar is spent on relief, no admin). And volunteer if you are local. But the direct response outlined above WILL have a more
immediate effect on many, many people who need help today.

== REGARDLESS of where you live:

Please do something to help the media to change their script. Lost lives and broken buildings do matter, and so does our nation's economic future. But there is potential for much more stress and suffering in the hidden Refugee City if we fail to help where help is needed, right now.

So call talkback, post on Facebook and Twitter, email radio stations, hassle the Press, TV and any politicos you know -- until the focus shifts away from Rescue City a little.

Put the message out! [I'd give you contacts for all the above -- and many others nationally and internationally -- but almost every one of you reading this has better bandwidth than me today, so go look them up!]

The acute phase will pass for these suburbs once power, adequate transport and running water (or good access to drinkable water) is commonplace in each of them. But that's not today and -- for some -- it will be weeks away.

That's it. There is a real, immediate problem, and the solution is not an easy one.

PS -  Lane's Emulsion WAS awful.  My mother said it would always do me good.  It was good to give it up after I left home at 17.   MalNZ

I think we have to remember MalNZ, the volunteers are under huge pressure with the sheer enormity of the task, in some cases patience is required as its impossible to fix the chaos in 10 days. The thousands of people volunteering in Christchurch are doing all they can to help all those who need it.

That distant cousin is soo accurate, Mal.

They did always say you would need to look after yourself for 3-4 days but 9-10 days is not on.

The grass roots groups like Rangiora Express have saved these "Refugee" suburbs. Today they delivered "bucket" toilets ;D Kiwi ingenuity at its best.

Apparently our street in Heathcote got 1 Portaloo today yet 18 were at the Rangiora refuge for 12 people on Monday night:( Just to add, 6 different people said to CD these should go somewhere else with no result.

Civil Defence need to be seriously looked at, Orion has accomplished more in a week than they have.
I get the impression that CD told groups like Rangiora Express to pull out as they had food supplies etc under control...rubbish there were still pockets like Ferrymead, Heathcote and surrounds getting nothing at all.

Annie

To add: the volunteers have been amazing, I'm not at all critical of them, but I think good leaders were lacking. I'm a Project Manager and a few others I know here are also. We all offered to co-ordinate various groups but none of us were used. Believe me, I'm a better PM than a cook ;D

Mal, Your last account is heartbreaking.   I am so far away but do hope that the authorities and everyone involved hear your message.

We still, very occasionally, see images from Haiti, Pakistan and elsewhere where survivors of those earthquakes/floods/landslides are living in unimaginable conditions months/years after the media attention has moved elsewhere.

I pray that those suffering in the regions you mention don't become 'forgotten' people.

With much love from a cold but sunny UK, where most of the population can, fortunately, go about their daily business.

Just had another jolt in Wellington, about 5 minutes ago. Short and sweet!  I thought I felt a couple of tiny little swimmy ones earlier in the evening, if I'd been on the turps I would have thought I'd had one too many. ;D   The second one gave the house a bit of a creak.

3rd one I have felt tonight.  No doubt about this one at all.  A loud thump, as when our local army are doing explosives. Not a huge one, but one good sharp jolt, and creaks in house. Still sitting up at my computer,(obviously) but was seriously getting ready to take cover!

Just had a look on Geonet, not registered yet.  But back to the Christchurch people, once again my heart goes out to you for bearing this burden day after day since September.

Suzy, I truly hope you take up one of those offers of a break away from it!  - But maybe, just maybe mind you, Wellington might not be a good option right now  ;D

It's on Geonet now

 Reference Number: 3473252
NZDT: Fri, Mar 4 2011 2:19 am
Magnitude: 4.7
Depth: 30 km
Details: 10 km north-east of Upper Hutt

So, bigger than I thought, and only 10 Kms away -  just as well it was 30km down methinks!!

Maybe I imagined the other two, they're still not on the register, and this one was listed within a couple of minutes.

Well, I think I need a cuppa and a fag!!

Hi there!

Mal, your accounts are amazing, mind boggling etc! If it were not for your posts on here we would have absolutely no idea just what you folks are having to cope with. You are giving us a real insight as to just what life is like, from the inside. After reading it all, I thought that you ought to send that to the Powers that be, so that they know what it is like for the ordinary person on the ground.

Are there any Wellingtonians who live in the Lower Hutt area ??? I have a friend who lives in Belmont and am wondering if she is ok. I would try ringing her, but with the 13 hour time difference and me not knowing her work hours, it makes it a bit difficult!

Do take care everyone

Hello all and especially TwiggyTree for the latest newspaper account.  I have been following this thread very closely and praying for all of the affected people.  It will be a loooong road to recovery but I know that all of the Kiwis who survived this tragedy will come out stronger.  And, PLEASE, everyone, be careful and re-stock your earthquake preparedness kits as soon as you can.  This thread, as others have said, is the BEST account of what is really happening.  Please continue to let us know what is happening; our national news has precious little information at this point.   Pat

I know of a number of ex-pat Kiwi's wanting to come home and help.

Suburbs had to wait until the city was taken care of, people were trapped in buildings under rubble and on fire, I think they had the right to be seen first.
Those in the suburbs who are walking and talking can make do until the injured are taken care of, even if it meant having no water or power, they are alive, can pitch together and get things sorted.
Sorry to sound so hard nosed about it, but it is something you learn in first aid, if you come across a car accident you do not go to the person walking around, you go to the person who is still or in shock first.

Sorry to hear Wellington had another shake, when you get 24 in one day, that is nerve racking.  Have a kit ready with a tent, blankets, water, food, torch, gas BBQ and a bucket for a make shift toilet.

We have had a offer to go to Victoria any time we want too.  School should be back next week for my children, so will have to think about where or if we go away.

Mental health is going to be a big concern.  My friend who is a nurse, said there has already been a big jump in cases.  That is why it is good to write or talk about your feelings to anyone.

Post by: MalNZ on Friday 04 March 11 02:51 GMT (UK)
Hi all,

The last long missive that I posted has gone out to politicians and newspapers. Although written at 2 am I'm not sure which day.  I like to think that it has had some effect and that present work in the eastern suburbs has increased due to it and not the Prime Minister's visit today (my cynicism is showing - put it down as a quake effect). My cousin in New Brighton has had power and water restored this morning.

The statistics of water and power restoration is a little misleading as the percentage is based on the whole of Christchurch.  What we do not see is the percentage restored  of the devastated eastern suburbs and I strongly suspect that the rate of increase in those areas is still slow  as I understand  that some special underground cabling has to be imported from Germany. The alternative of pole-supplied power would be just as slow as there are no power poles in those roads which have underground wiring. The sewerage system is an even worse catch-22 situation. Miles (or km) of underground pipes must be checked and the broken pumping stations fixed (others of these are being run by diesel-generated power). Otherwise temporary plastic piping also has to be imported. It seems that NZ has run out of portaloos. These are now coming from Australia.  To fix these things certainly will take time, many months. Without distracting from the anguish suffered by relatives and friends of the deceased and injured, we must also quickly help those whose suffer from disabilities, age complaints etc. The anguish of a person whose close relative has died from a heart attack or stroke due to earthquake stress 2 days after the event is no less than those whose relative has died or been badly injured. The last 10 days has seen the heart attacks, strokes and stress related family breakups increase markedly.  The two refugees. long-time friends, staying at home here ( 80 & 94 y.o.) do show noticeable changes in behaviour.  I cannot say to them  or others  "box on" or "get over it".  Talk the talk and walk the walk with them.

We all have much respect and empathy for the foot-soldiers of rescue and recovery efforts and the many, many volunteers who help out in their own way.  There are thousands of them. There are pockets of the city which do feel neglected. Is this a chance effect just like the great differences in  the effects of the earthquakes on property?

I feel very sorry for the Mexican team which arrived and  told they could not help in the CBD as they did not have formal paperwork. Their special search dogs were quarantined.  Their experience of the Haiti earthquake aftermath was thus used to help out in a suburb, much to the delight of the residents, but not a proper use of their professional expertise.  This is an example of the lapse in the "upper" levels of emergency responsibility and communication.   Medical triage for a small group has well defined guidelines and in most cases made by professionals.  Triage for a city population is neither fully developed (can it ever be?) nor entirely professional. Whereas a medic has to make a decision with little or no other input, civil defence relies on input from many individuals, and it is the coordination of that input which sometimes fails - witness the demolition of the church without proper "authority" or by an extreme "do it yourself".  Also an  individual may get away with bending the "rules". A civil defence committee cannot; it must follow the straight and narrow path of the law, even under national emergency conditions.  My experience in a search and rescue team makes me suspicious of  "supervisors" as some do it with an eye to personal advancement in a community.  In the end the professionals are way ahead of the politicos and, unfortunately, some of the problems in the guidance of these Christchurch operations seem due to political bias.

My family live on the Eastern side of town.  They have had water delivered to them and banana boxes full of food straight to the door.  My cousin lives on Pages Road, and Aunt just off Linwood Ave.  I am also a ex Bromley girl.
The help is there and has been there very early.  Even if it meant going to the welfare centre walking.

What streets that are not getting the help are the ones that need army vehicles, as a normal car can not use the roads.   So why have these people not been moved out completely?

From what friends have told me,there is a very real need for more help in the Eastern suburbs, the elderly are unable to walk to welfare centres with the way the roads and footpaths are,the last thing they want or need is a fractured hip from a fall.
As a nurse I have seen the devastating consequences of fractured neck of femurs.
The worst hit areas should have been given the most help.

Hi All,
Another view. This poem is in the public domain at http://beattiesbookblog.blogspot.com/
MalNZ

Christchurch bookseller bares her soul........
A poem

I'm tired.
Tired of the bruises and the pain
in my heart, and in my brain.

Tired of the feelings deep inside
that bubble up with tears
I cannot hide.

I'm tired of images I can't escape,
on paper and screen,
in dreams when I sleep.

I'm tired of friends not knowing what to do.
They listen, but don't hear what I say.
They don't understand.

I'm not complaining,
but I can't celebrate that I'm alive
while part of me is there, in the dust.
I've shared the fear with those who didn't survive.

How will I cope?
How will I move on?
I don't know.

Maybe tomorrow I will take a less painful step.
Maybe I will be able to lend someone a helping hand.
I will survive, this I know,
and so will the city I'm proud of.

Some other tomorrow I hope people will understand
how grateful I am
for all the support,
and the messages of hope.

But today, tonight – I'm tired.

Thank you very much Mal once again.  I second Wiggy's posting your observations are most acute.  I check in every morning also to see how you are all bearing up.  Although mentioned before there remains an extreme lack of news here regarding the plight of those in Christchurch.

All those managing to escape even for a brief while I hope you enjoy your break.

Once again....Bon Courage  :)

Just catching up with you all again.
Very little news here now, but I know how easily the "rest of the world" can forget when they no longer see what's happening in the daily news.
Brisbane and SEQ folk are still working on cleaning up after the floods, we up here are still cleaning up after cyclone Yasi and Christchurch will be cleaning up for years to come. But the footy or the politicians are on front pages now.

I think the world should have a Remembrance Day for all the natural disasters we've been suffering this last several months.

Woolworths in Australia - well, where I live, so I presume all over - are collecting at the checkouts for the NZ earthquake appeal via the Salvation Army.  There's a notice on the back of the cash register which hits you in the eye while you wait for your things to go through.
Your donation is added on to your bill, whatever amount you nominate.
They even give you a separate little tax invoice receipt for taxation purposes.
I hope lots of people see it and act on it

I realise I am up here in the non shaky part of New Zealand, but let's be gentle to one another.  I saw an interview with a counsellor who was in the CTV building in the quake and he said that the chemical that is released into the brain to cope with such a big stressful event is wearing off and people are experiencing all kinds of effect from that.  So maybe we can be extra kind to one another. We don't need to lessen anyone else's suffering to express our own. I feel for all of you down there - from the minor damage to the loss of lives this has had a big impact on you all and indeed on the whole country.  Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

... :( so sad Suzy .... and it is very traumatic for the rescue crews even though it is part of their 'job' some images stay with them forever and they have their different ways of dealing with it. Know my husband as a fire officer used to say, after attending anything horrific, that the crew had a really tough time and different reactions.... and he often didn't relate the full story to me either! We have been getting quite a few personal accounts of rescue crew members, one in particular is in a bit of hot water for saying what he did publicly... on a forum, and it went to media.

... not sure if it's been mentioned already ... MY City of Ruins by Bruce Springsteen ... is played at the end of the TV1 coverage regularly.

Hi everyone,

This is a very valuable discussion which I hope is providing much-needed moral support to those affected directly by the events in Christchurch and in return helps those from elsewhere understand the daily struggles that they face.

But I am becoming concerned about some of the comments posted. Could I ask that everyone avoids speculative comments which can cause great distress to others and where possible focus on positive aspects of the recovery.

Thank you.

Hi everyone, just to let you know that though shaken, and with the exception of my wife, my family and I got through the shake. My wife was thrown from her government chair into some government furniture and sustained a couple of broken ribs. She has pain killers"for Africa" but seems to be on the mend, though it will be 6 to 8 weeks. To add insult to her injury, when she reached her parked car a house had collapsed onto it. We see it some nights on the telly. Can't get near it though.

The concerns expressed by those of you out of town and out of country will help us to move forward I am sure.

Alan first of all I hope your wife makes a good recovery

I hope I have not upset anyone on this thread by giving you my thoughts
I feel i am a little of a New Zealander with my grandfather McKenzie being born in Dunedin .they returned to Scotland in 1890

Last night with nothing to watch on our TV we watched the DVD we made in December 2010 of our holiday  there and when the part came of Christchurch in the Cathedral we both just froze

I said to my husband many of you would like to see this as the little ones are there singing .My thoughts were hope all of them are safe

Before we left Lyttleton I videoed and we watched the trucks moving about the harbour in those high up vehicles shifting containers ,we just said how would those poor men get from those at the time of the quake
we can only but imagine  This is the only way we can share our thoughts with you all by you being able to write and let us know your daily happenings and I thank for that
Take care of yourselves if you can and have strength to help others god bless
