Hi Akcant,
What details do you definitely know about James Barr?
Do you subscribe to ancestry/find my past etc?
Have you had a look on the 1881 census which is free to view on many sites including https://www.familysearch.org/
Apologies for the bombardment of questions!

Also, who does he marry, and what name does he give for his father (from the marriage cert)
-
Hi Spidermonkey,

I may be wrong and I'm sure someone will correct me but I think you may have to have a look at the Scottish records on the Scotlands People website for his birth details.

I've purchased credits on Scotlandspeople and still haven't had any luck finding my great grandfather :(
-
I've also found the marriage index in the UK for my grandfather and his wife :-
James Barr and
Grace Oliver
Gateshead
Vol. 10a/Page 1367
-
Does James say he was born in Ayrshire according to the census? And was he single when he married Grace?

There seem to be 7 James Barrs born in and around Ayr in 1867/68. I know that SP can eat credits quite quickly, but have you checked them all to see if any of them show Robert as the father?
-
Nell,
On the 1911 Census it states he was born 'near Ayr, Scotland' and yes a 'bachelor' on the marriage certificate.

Maggie1985,
I've checked 7 James Barrs 1866/1869 most of them with different fathers, except these two :-
James Barr b. 4/7/1869, Dalry (Ayr) father Robert Barr, Blacksmith
Mother - Mary Barr (Nelson)
AND
James Barr b. 20/3/1869, Ayr, father Robert Barr, Farmer
Mother - Mary Barr (unreadable)
-
I'm working my way through the James Barr with father Robert combinaton on the 1871 census - closest to his apparent birth date. The occupation for Robert eliminates the farmers or cowfeeder. Coal miners are a distinct possibility - it was not unheard of to talk up the occupation of your father in order to impress.
Does his age at death match with the 1867/68 birth date - or is it possible that this was not totally correct?
Nell
PS Just read your post. I've checked the James son of Robert the Blacksmith and he is still in Scotland in 1901 but employed as a printer compositor. I can't see him becoming a millwright by 1911.
And the mother of James born March 1869 was Mary Donald.
-
Like Little Nell, I've been trying to tie up James with a Robert who is the Manager of a colliery and so far I've also been tracing the family with the Blacksmith, and one who is a miner but no sign of his being a manager.
-
Nell,
I've just found one death index, if this is correct :-
Barr, James 76 yrs, Newcastle upon Tyne, Vol. 10b, Page 70 in 1943 June quarter
-
Perhaps as Nell said 'they talk up their positions to impress the family', I would have thought he was into the mining field somewhere and progressed from there. :P

Thanks for helping me I look forward to receiving any assistance you can give me. :) :)

The groom was James F Barr, full age, Bachelor, occupation was Blacksmith, residence at time of marriage was Bellshill, Toll Barr, Glasgow, father's name and occupation Robert John Barr, Blacksmith.
The bride was Mary Ann Quigley, Full age, Spinster, occupation Servant, residence at time of marriage was 13 Society Street, Derry, father's name and occupation William Quigley, Farmer. Witnesses were James English and Mary Wilson.

Hi Quigs
Thanks for posting.
Akcant hasn't been online here since 2011. As long as the email address hasn't changed, they should receive notifications that we have posted and hopefully come back soon.
