Title: Where is/was Cow Rigg, Castle Sowerby?
Post by: kathb on Friday 25 February 11 14:27 GMT (UK)
I have this as the place of birth on an ancestors certificate of 1865.  Can anyone help me locate this place please?

Have you tried Genuki for information on this?

I'm still looking for the Cow Rigg bit!

MODIFIED:  Ignore this one....it's nowhere near Castle Sowerby, sorry!

I tried Google maps and found this

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?rlz=1T4SUNC_enGB374GB375&q=cow+rigg+longtown&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hq=&hnear=Cow+Rigg,+Easton,+Longtown,+Carlisle,+Cumbria+CA6+5RR&gl=uk&ei=XL5nTdiRGoK0hAeFnr2fDw&sa=X&oi=geocode_result&ct=title&resnum=1&ved=0CBYQ8gEwAA

Gosh, what a long link! But it shows Cow Rigg as being mear Easton in the far north of Cumbria.

If it helps, in the 1871 census Cowrigg comes up in the Parish of Castle Sowerby and the Township of Bustabeck.
Neighbouring farms are Sour Nook, Stockwell,  Doby Hill, Style, Birks & Birks Hill.

You could shrink it using 'shrink link' at the bottom of the page  :D

Take a look at http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X=337500&Y=541500&A=Y&Z=120

There's a 'Low Currig' there, which could have originally been Cow Rigg

Jen, I'd agree with that. You can almost hear how the changes would have happened, if you imagine the word cow being pronounced more like coo.

Sour Nook also shows up on that map, and if you pan north Birks Hill comes into view  :D

I am no expert, but when googling Cow Rigg, a page came up for Marriages in the Longtown area ,

sample marriage record,

November 19 th 1836,at Longtown,
Saturday last ,Mr John Baxter of Baty town to Miss Wilson of Cow Rigg

In 1871 there was only one family there, and if you look at the map you'll see it seems to be a house by itself.

JenB is correct :)

Go to http://www.old-maps.co.uk/maps.html?coords=337500,542200

then select (on right) 1863-1895 1:2500 map

I think that's the Cow Rigg jen mentions in her reply #2, but Kath is specifically asking about Cow Rigg in Castle Sowerby parish.

Another mystery solved thanks to you all.

Hello Kathb

Cowrigg - Castle Sowerby used to be a ale house and a farm together.  I would think  it would have been in the parish of Raughton Head.  It is surrounded by Raughton Head, Sebergham, High Bridge, Stockdalewath.  I believe that the building is still there today (the location is a little hard to find!)

Thanks Oletta, this sounds promising.  The ancestor who lived there was an Inn Keeper prior to living there in 1865 and after in the North East, so it fits very well.
Can you tell me please how you know or found out that this address was an Alehouse and Farm?
Thank you

Oletta, this is great news.  I know my ancestors where there in 1865 when their second daughter's birth was registered at this address.  I am not sure how long they lived there as the next reference to them is in 1871 in Jarrow. Do you know when your family moved onto Cow Rigg?
Thanks for your help

Hello Kathb

My Great, Grandmother was not born at Cowrigg but her brother was!  Joseph Carr (Catherine Angela's father) and his family lived at Cowrigg from about the early 1900's.

The pub at Cow Rigg was called (I think) the Travellers Rest and is now a private dwelling.  I think at one point the building was owned by Lime House estates (private school near Dalston) and they sold it 10-15 years ago.  I know this because we got the details from the estate agents at the time.

There is a planning app for Travellers Lodge, which I thnk is the same place http://eforms.eden.gov.uk/fastweb/detail.asp?AltRef=07/0616  and you can click and view on a map.

Hope this is helpful  (and if any of the details are incorrect, I apologise - it is a long time since the pub closed and I haven't driven round those roads for years)

Cowrigg was definitely a public house called the Traveller's Rest. I proposed to my wife in it in 1968.  It would be in Castle Sowerby parish originally but must be close on the border of Sebergham parish and Raughton Head parish. Now a private house with little indication of its past.
